Has anyone successfully disabled a DPF on a PD170 engine?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone - newbie here. Sorry if I'm going over a well-trodden topic here but I have a very specific question:

Has anyone here successfully disabled a DPF on a PD170 engine? And if so could you point me to a trustworthy and proven mechanic who could help me do so on mine?

Full story: Have been running a lovely Octavia VRS diesel, 56 reg, for about 2 years now - got it 2nd hand with 79,000 miles on the clock.

Until last October was doing daily motorway commute - all was perfect. Then switched to a new job, train commute, the only use the VRS was getting was smaller journeys - sure enough the DPF has clogged up, with engine and glow plugs warning lights on, locked in limp mode, local Skoda dealers saying "only option is to replace". Am now at 114,000 miles.

I'd like to disable the DPF by having the inner "brick" removed and the body of the DPF rewelded - so that my MOT friend is not forced to fail me. Also understand that I need the ECU reprogramming.

I contacted one of the Shark network after reading recommendations on this forum. They told me that they could not in fact do the work but recommended JKM in Portsmouth as an expert "one stop shop" for the job.

Spoke to JKM who were very open and helpful but who turned down the work on the basis that "they had never seen a successful DPF delete on a PD170 engine". According to them, it's notoriously problematic on the PD170 and the reprogramming of the ECU always fails, meaning that the car needs to be returned every month or so to the garage for the ECU to be reset.

Also told me to beware of the many DPF removal outfits currently advertising on the web.

So - can anyone give evidence for or against this? Would really welcome specific examples of successful DPF removals on PD170 engines and recommended garages that I could call to get help. Or should I swallow the fact that it's best avoided and stump up the £1,800 (aarrghh).

My technical knowledge is virtually zero so thanks for keeping all advice REALLY simple :-) ... thanks in advance, any advice really appreciated.

Shark CAN do the work for you, they have a page on their website and Ben has done several cars from Briskoda. Ben is currently away from Shark but does still post here occasionally.

http://www.sharkperformance.co.uk/dpf-removal.asp

However they are based some distance away from the south, so you would need to travel.

I removed the dpf myself and fitted jbs pipe and got nationwide company to come and do the software and i have had hassle with the car going into regen and into limp mode and had to change over and since i have always thought car is'nt what it should be i am looking for advce on some1 in the west of scotland area that is trustworthy and reliable to change the software for me, problem is every 1 speak to says shark but too far for me to travel

Thanks Manny that's what I reckoned. I actually called W8Performance direct and they are new to the Shark network I think. So I'll try tomorrow again on the 01623 332233 number. Don't mind travelling north a bit ... even in limp mode :) ... I'm from Manchester originally!!

Peter is a top bloke and really knows his stuff

Thanks Chris appreciate it. I'm in Hampshire so if I can find somewhere a bit closer that would be handy but like I've said above, don't mind travelling to get the job done well !!

I would travel to these guys no problem. They are really good and FAR cheaper than Shark

Is very strange ur dpf is gone, did u not get any warning signs or did ur dpf light not come on?

In Ireland most people driving a vrs never have dpf issues and I know a lad only a few miles from me with a vrs with 160k on it and never even had a dpf light on in the 5 years of ownership but he does drive it on

Have you tried a forced regen via vagcom? My missus Leon goes into limp mode about every 3 months and just take it out in the night and run the regen on the laptop on a quiet dual carriage way. (can dig out the steps if u need em, but no doubt they are on the forum here somewhere)

If you want it removed and remapped then can totally understand but just wondered if u knew if it ain't clogged to the brim it will clear.

Your friends one is not blue '07 is it??

I contacted one of the Shark network after reading recommendations on this forum. They told me that they could not in fact do the work but recommended JKM in Portsmouth as an expert "one stop shop" for the job.

All Shark dealers can offer problem free software, however not all Shark dealers have workshop facilities (such as W8) to carry out mechanical work.

I'm afraid that's complete rubbish, we've been doing DPF removals for years with absolutely no issues (leading the market for many applications) and to say that they have to be regularly reprogrammed is incorrect. Not many companies properly understand the ECU that's used in the PD170, in fact our biggest competitor doesn't even offer remaps for the PD170 at all.

Yesterday's workshop job was a 2011 Audi A5 3.0TDI for DPF removal, remap and full Milltek. Monday was an Golf PD170 DPF removal and remap, Friday's job was a Leon PD170 DPF off and remap. We do scores of them successfully and are proud to be trusted with cars such as those.

Also told me to beware of the many DPF removal outfits currently advertising on the web.

Now that is good advice. There are lots of companies out there claiming to be able to do this and very few who actually can. As with everything, you pay your money and take your choice.

We offer two stages of DPF removal, Stage 0 with standard power for £449 all inclusive, and Stage 1/2 power maps along with DPF removal for £669.

Hope that helps! If you'd like any more information please call the office (I'm off work at the moment but I'm going stir crazy hence why I'm following the forums!).

Can vouch for the DPF removal at Shark. I'm also from Hampshire and made the trip up there - well worth it in my opinion. Oh and a cheeky remap always gives you good grins for the trip home!

+ 1, You won't be disappointed

Shark do the sts unit which means you can map the car yourself. Not sure if they can write the map specific to the work you have done yourself but it doesnt cost you anything to give them a call.

Astounding. Mine's had no DPF for the best part of 3 years and JKM are still saying it can't be done. :wonder:

I had my DPF removed and deleted on my old Audi S line PD 170 and had no trouble at all...infact it went like stink afterwards :)) Theres loads of places over here in Ireland who said they could do it but i went to the top man...Mr Joe Power :))

K:)

Where's joe power based and is he the best in Ireland?

Right thanks everyone - all the feedback really appreciated. I'm booked in at Shark in Mansfield for Friday 23rd.

ChrisRs - thanks also for the recommendation in Leeds - I'm going with Shark as they are closer to me and they have rave reviews across this forum - but am really grateful for your suggestion.

And I'm going for the stage 2 power remap so yes, really looking froward to the drive home!!

I'll be sure to post results of my day out on the 23rd back here. Thanks again everyone.

Yeah, had considered this - I've got VRS friends who ran the forced regen and declogged their DPF successfully but as you say, I just want shot of the DPF ... and the better performance that goes with it. Thanks for the thoughts though.

Wow - gone for the Stage 2 as well!

You will enjoy the drive home!

As Octimark mentioned above, if travel is an issue (I can see why!) then you can use our Self Tuning System to retune your car with our map. If you'd like to discuss it please give the office a call on 01623 332233.

BTW, mine just passed a legit MOT, including a smoke test.

Don't think your sts unit would work as i am sure the comany that done it are known for locking there remap files,

Do u see much smoke now since ur filter was removed?
