vRS timing chain snapped at less than 70k miles

Goods not of acceptable quality and durability - Sales of Goods Act.

It's unreasonable for a part of the engine which is designed to last many years/miles to just let go.

They should pay for it fully and if not take them to the small claims court.

Don't pay a penny, as every time they get away with this, it means they think they can keep doing it.

If you've got finance, on some agreements, you can hand the car back after so many payments, so just inform them it's failed, is not of suitable quality and you'll be handing it back (Check with a lawyer first mind). I'd guess that'd get it moving.

  • No, as long as the garage is VAT registered garage and they use OEM parts. Kwik Fit? Seriously? I wouldn't take my bicycle there.

  • The tfsi has a cambelt & a chain linking the camshafts together.

In the USA it was claimed:

In the Class Action filed in 2007, Plaintiff alleges that VW knowingly concealed, suppressed and omitted to disclose to consumers that Class Vehicles contained defectively designed timing belt tensioners, timing belts and/or associated parts ("timing belt system"), and that VW failed to disclose and/or misrepresented the appropriate service interval for replacement of the timing belt system in Settlement Class Vehicles. VW has denied any defect, wrongdoing or liability whatsoever and deny that this lawsuit could properly be certified as a class action for trial.

VW settled with an extended warranty, free periodic inspections, an updated manual and out of pocket exspences for those who had previously paid for repairs.

Perhaps VAG Europe might talk to their people in the US?

You can as long as they use genuine parts.

Does the 1st service under warranty have to be done by a dealer though? This is what Kwik Fit told me.

I was looking in the Service book where it mentions "Regular specialist servicing of the vehicle by an authorised Skoda Service Partner is a prerequisite for maintaining any claims arising from the warranty".

So does an 'authorised Skoda Service Partner' mean a dealer?
