Thanks mike,,, never set out to offend anyone

But thanks for your advice

I don't think you've offended anyone (if you have, they're in the wrong place), forums are a place to ask and receive opinions, everyone has one, not all agree, otherwise we would all be driving Porsche 911s at the weekend and Octavia VRS TDIs for the commute ;)

I've just had enough of the people (idiots) who claim speed is a bad thing. I (being a petrolhead) think that in the right place, time and circumstance it's bloody awesome! Now I admit I've grown up a bit since my first car, and being 35 I'm still young enough to enjoy some spirited driving (all legal of course), but I save all my petrol craving lunacy for trackdays in my E36, balls out, relative safety, no chance of losing my licence - the only drawback being that I can't attend enough due to funds/time etc. Although I did manage a peak speed of 139mph going up to Aremberg at the Ring last year

Cheers for posing the question, it's always fun to read the comments!

Thank you, I think I will get a blue fin chip,,,, just don,t tell her lol!!!

The thing I like about the blue fin is that since its a "DIY" map you can take it off and drive with the standard map every so often to remind you why you mapped it :)

I have looked and they are just short of 500 pound??

Thank you it's good to be welcomed into a new group of fellow petrol enthusiasts!!!

168mph according to GPS on the autobahn in my old Stage 2+ vRS TFSI.

I did also have 171mph once according to GPS but it was on a downhill stretch.

I have looked and they are just short of 500 pound??

Thank you it's good to be welcomed into a new group of fellow petrol enthusiasts!!!

That's about right.

And welcome :)

Also a time and place!!!

I have put my 250 to the max on a disused air field

Never on a public road

So what speed has yours been to.

I only have a 1.8 TSi but 137 on the GPS on an unrestricted road.

Upset

Merc C Class Estate 350CDi

E Class E350CDi

Lots of BMW320D and Audi SLine 2.0TDI's

An 08 plate Boxster

Jag XJ (new shape)

RR Evoque, just launched and was trying to show his mate the POWER!, but for some reason didn't have enough to get past on a DC uphill - he had to pull back in.

The best confrontation was against an 09 plate XFR (yep 500bhp ones) from 40mph to a bit more! the difference isn't as big as you or the driver of the Jag would imagine. I think he needed to use more revs than he probably thought he would of.

I also had a run against a 650+bhp Muscle car than runs regular 11sec Qtr's on road tyres. From 30mph to a little more than license loosing speeds the gap went from 2 car lengths to about 7. Not too bad for a family hatch/estate. Oh and the Muscle car does about 5mpg on that kind of run

I've just had enough of the people (idiots) who claim speed is a bad thing.

I don't necessarily think speed is a bad thing but my partner is totally speed averse & she does think it's a bad thing. She is not however an idiot. I appreciate your comment though as I'm short of time & the common attitude on briskoda that folk who don't agree with you are idiots, retards, etc etc helps me reduce my time here. Yeah - I know, I'm an idiot.

Thanks for your comments

Two runs worth mention, 152 and 154

I have to say the power is unbelievable, it just goes and goes

Upset many 320 bmw and even a 330 both petrol

Best was a 350 Mercedes, driven by a friend on the way to wales on the country roads,

Before any negativity about it , the drive was safe and always within the national speed parameters

Looking forward to my vrs though

For me, acceleration is more of a buzz than speed - the feeling of bring pushed firmly back into your seat.

That does it for me.

High speed scares me. On the roads, you are relying on others not making a mistake.

Just my 2p.

Dunc I agree mate

I am a firm believer that the initial bang is so good and once at 60 into 6th

Speed is not nice and is something to do only if your comfortable with, the usual foot down and drive flat out arb the worries

Try a track day you will enjoy it

Perhaps 'idiot' is a bit strong, how about narrow minded? While I wasn't aiming that comment at anyone specific, let me give you an example: Somebody doing 100 mph on a quiet motorway in fine weather is breaking the law in this country, doesn't mean it's dangerous, there are a few places where this is still legal (I would wager our 3-4 lane motorways are safer at times than derestricted dual carriageway autobahns).

There is nothing wrong with overtaking some arse who's sat at 45-50mph in a national speed limit zone with straights and good visibility, I don't appreciate then being flashed by said arse because I overtook in a safe manner around the speed limit, they probably think speed is bad also and anyone driving at the speed limit should be put in stocks.

IMO, people without an interest in driving shouldn't be allowed to drive!

I also detest vegetarians - the human race didn't get where it is today by eating rabbit food!

I have nothing but contempt for the health & safety obsessed morons who want everybody and everything wrapped in cotton wool - having to fill in quadruple risk assessment forms (or get sacked) to rescue a child struggling in knee deep water is borderline criminal (IMO) but they threaten to prosecute anyone who tries to put their own selves in danger to help.

Of course, that's just what these forum things are for - OPINIONS, no malice or bad feelings are intended, just a place for (usually) like minded individuals to share opinions, thought provoking ideas, have a giggle and sometimes offer helpful information. :)

If I offended anyone, unlucky, that wasn't my intention, deal with it, these are opinions and meant to be taken with a pinch of salt!

Nice post Jim.

Infact this thread has been a good read.

VRS250 - have you got a bluefin now? What do you think?

I've had my octavia Vrs remapped, Its money very well spent!!

The stock map was very turbo'y (?), Erm...... Like from idle = Flat, Flat, Flat, then serge to red line.

Now its Solid torque from the off, to serge, to mega serge at the top.

Great for overtaking  !! But also great for Eco driving on the school run keeping the rev's down.

How there's so much usable power on tap from the off. Its like driving a big 6, But there's NO nice sound track .

Regards.........

I'm also an arse.  I just picked up my lasses 'new' Jeep in Grimsby today & drove it back home approx 150 mile at 50-55mph mostly on motorway to see how much mpg I could get out of it.  Please don't shoot me the deal with it/pinch of salt bull**** - I'm not arguing the point about speed (believe it or not I've driven/drive at speed) rather the negative name-calling of anyone/everyone of a different opinion.  I 'deal with it' by giving my opinion in return because, uh, that's what forums are for?

That said even the best brakes & reaction time are going to be tested at high speed if some 'arse' pulls out in front of you without warning or has a blow out.

Slightly crossed wires there I think, I don't mind how anyone else drives, but if you're doing much less than the limit, expect to be overtaken and don't get upset when you do! I'd rather not die of boredom or old age on my 180 mile weekend commute...

As for the rest, **** happens, I try to lessen the chances by driving defensively and at this moment in time, after 17 years of driving, around 2-300,000 miles approx, 1 minor bump in 1998 and 1 blow out in 1999, I don't think I've done too bad. I drive spiritedly on occasion but save my speed/adrenalin requirements for trackdays.

On a side note, if it weren't for man's obsession with speed, we wouldn't have the cars, planes, trains and a lot of the technology we take for granted today. Fact!

Not as fast as the Hyundai I30 hire car that I had to drive home from Aberdeen last month !

Mind you that's a poor car.

And the sad thing is you honestly think your opinions are not offensive

And the sad thing is you honestly think your opinions are not offensive

????????

Great thread & not degenerated into the usual " speed always kills, not exceeding the limit makes you a safe driver !!

All below IMHO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speed dosent cause accidents, inapropriate speed for the situation is often the issue. Too slow can be a contributing factor in accidents as can to fast, its just to fast usually results in a bigger bump.

Everyoner needs to drive within the limits of their ability, the ability of ther car & the situation they are in. If it dosent feel safe it isnt, if it feels totally safe it isnt as you are being to complacent.

I followed a family yesterday, I guess out to enjoy the weather, dawdling in my view at around 40 in a 60, several cars in the queue behind . Ahead a car started to poke its nose out of a turning, I started to gently brake. 3-4 seconds later oik in front nailed the brakes, probably scared his kids to death, the car wasnt pulling out, just trying to get better visability on a blind exit but he hadnt seen it, to happy in his "safe little bubble with brain in park mode" , a little nearer, a little further out & they may have hit but "oik for brains" would not have been to blame in law yet people could have been hurt.

We have several roads near us as I guess have many where speed limits have been reduced in the last few years, so when it said it was a 50 was it any safer than the 30 it is now, answer obviously is no but it shouldnt take a posted limit to tell any driver whats safe, the car has a huge window at the front, a mirror for behind & God was kind enough to give you eyes & a brain, use them all. I have driven "extreemly" fast on UK roads. Yet 30 in a 30 past a school is just stupid yet legal

As I have said drive within your limits & those of the car & do it with concideration of other road users, if you want to drive under the limit keep an eye on the mirror, you should be doing it anyway and make it easier for others to pass, if theres a short straight move to the left to give them a better view, if they go to overtake ease off a little, If Im pushing on I often flash the car in front, Im not saying get out of the way, more are you awake & have you seen me.

Speed if you enjoy it is fun but treat with respect & remember your fun could have a huge impact on the lives of others if it goes wrong. We all live on this planet & we all have differing views but consideration of others is the one to remember. The chap in a apparent mad hurrry might be trying to get to seriously ill person in hospital, the chap dawdling may have car thats not running properly, its not always because they are being a total oik

Now get the car out, its a lovely day & go & enjoy it however you choose.

What's more dangerous to non car squishy things:

1) someone doing 90mph on a straight open motorway in good conditions

2) someone doing 40mph in an urban built up area.

Sorry but I get ****ed off with idiots (yes idiots) who drive every where at 40 mph flashing and shouting if you dare to do a safe overtake on them in a NSL but then they proceed to stay at 40mph in the 30 zones. Muppets.

Most unsafe drivers as far as I'm concerned (apart from joyriding tools) are those that drive literally zoned out, the act of driving is the last thing on their mind, whether it's mummies on the school run or old grandads in ancient rovers or people asleep on the 9-5 commute.

Speed doesn't kill, incompetent muppets driving into people kill, regardless of velocity.

I love these threads, great banter!

Stuart & Boozy, SPOT ON!

Richarde if that was aimed at me, offensive? I haven't started attacking disabled people or made any racist or religious comments, get some perspective in life!

Of course if it wasn't then ignore the above :)

Hi Jim, its just the "arses" who flash you for overtaking them are just expressing an opinion. By their standards (probably not mine I appreciate a well-judged well-executed overtake) you are driving too fast. Havent you said opinions are fine? Also I am vegetarian so you "detest" me yet you have never even met me.

Other other than the above I agree with most of what you said although if we all drove at the speed limit and too the conditions there would be nobody to overtake maybe we need those arses...

Just wanted to put a word in about the isle of Man which was mentioned earlier in this topic-

They have speed limits which are strictly enforced BUT- they also have De restricted roads which are exactly what it sounds like- roads without speed restriction i.e. not subject to the national speed limit of 70 miles an hour meaning 100 miles an hour is legal.

Is also filled with beautiful challenging roads lots sweeping bends mostly lightly trafficked especially the mountain areas and is generally a great place to drive. Avoid during TT week though.

I have traveled at 140mph there perfectly safely. They even have orange signs with a picture of the upcoming bend on!

Also if you are slow <60mph in a derestricted area the locals will overtake! Great to see people who know how to overtake, finally the locals are also a less likely to pull out on you, I put this down to them being used to bikes travelling at immense speeds.

The two things to be aware of though- obey their speed limits, you can expect frequent speed traps in town ( fair enough too )

and think Bike! As bikers also enjoy the isle.
