Black oil after a service

Featured Replies

Had my 2.0 Octavia vrs cr serviced today at Hortons Lincoln, decided after tea to check the oil level as you do but to my disgust the oil on the dipstick was nearly jet black. I have only travelled home from Hortons and covered 9 miles up the bypass. I know its a diesel but surley it should still be clean after 9 miles?

I managed to catch the manager in when I rang and he wants me to take it back down in the morning to have a look.

I decided to video the mileage and the oil on the dipstick with my mobile phone in case I have any problems tomorrow.

Has anyone come across this before or have experienced this themselves?

Smell the oil on the dip stick then the oil from a top up bottle, if its old oil it will stink.

Its p#####g down with rain so not going out there now and I dont have a top up bottle.

Perfectly normal, I think you'll find the oil is slightly thinner than the Cr@p that was removed and if you rub it between your finger and thumb its not really all that black

Diesels will make the oil black instantly, check the filter, does it look new, is it dusty? if it looks new then they've changed the oil.

To be honest I would make sure your right before going back to save on embarrassment if you're wrong.

But its only done 9 miles!

Have they drained all the old oil out first? was the engine warm when they did it?

Will look to see if the filter is a new one in the morning, but still not happy

I have attached the video i took with my mobile phone.

My old Octy 1.9tdi used to make new oil black almost instantly.

I check my oil at least once a week in my new VRS CR and even after 5000 miles the oil still had some colour (it's now done 8000 and I've had the oil changed to eliminate 'running in debris/contaminants).

I'd recheck yours before taking it back...

The oil in mine turns black instantly after change. Even when I get home and check level after 5 miles and it's black.

New oil in a diesel will turn black straight away after a change.

Okay guys, you may have convinced me. Going to check to see if the filter is a new one in the morning.

Honestly my oil turns blacks after just starting the engine for 30 seconds to fill the filter. It's normal.

Bloody Dirty Diesels!!!

Bloody Dirty Diesels!!!

Yep but they're still good! :)

Yes totally normal, done many changes on diesels over the years and within seconds of running a diesel engine after a change it's black.

So what's the cause of it changing colour so fast??

sent from my phone....

Wish my wife was a diesel

The about 0.5L that's left in the oil filter housing and various parts after a change.

You won't be able to tell on the filter, as it's a paper filter in a housing.

If you get a tiny bit of oil on your fingers and rub it, if it feels at all powdery, then it's probably not been changed.

Obviously wash it straight off your hands after this, as dirty oil isn't good for your skin.

Decided not to take it back this morning, had a look at the oil again, its not powdery at all and it feels silky smooth,

Looked at the filter housing cap and it looks as though it may have been removed but its still dusty/dirty. I would have expected the mechanic to wipe the parts before putting them back. Bet he didnt clean/wipe inside the filter housing either when he replaced the paper element.

The manager wants you to take it back down in the morning to have a look - he's a dipstick :)

The only time i had clear oil was when i changed the oil and filter having extracted the oil using a Pela oil extractor pump on my Golf 3 TDI.

Recently got first diesel car (Octavia 1.9 Tdi) and only second dealer service.

I can say that as a comparison

Saab 900 with 225 000 on clock 10 000 miles since last oil change (Castrol Magnatec)

Octavia with 30 000 on clock 8 miles since main dealer (variable service) oil change.

Octavia oil a lot darker.

Dealer insists that oil was fully drained and filter changed.

Is this tread really still running!

Once more oil goes black straight away after been changed on the diesel car!!!!

Yeah, and just to add, all brands of diesels turn the oil black, any one that says their car doesn't, well im sorry but I'm afraid you've bought a very loud petrol car as a diesel will turn the oil black.

my car had 7 miles on it when I got it new and it was not clear clean oil :p

I can also confirm that my oil in my diesel VW group cars has been black after an oil change. Several different garages used as well.
