Dog transportation

Hi All

Up till now iv always put the back seats down and fastened the dogs to seat anchors but now iv got vRS and my two can be rather travel sick i want a cage of some sort, at least the sick will be contained :)

Only problem is, one of the dogs is an 8 stone whopper of the German Shepherd and other problem my Octy is the hatch back, so im obviously lacking the box shape of the estate so its getting a cage big enough for lard arse shepherd but not too big its going to damage something.

Has anyone got a solution or know of a cage that would fit? I have concidered a trailer but i think this would be cruel :giggle:

P.S iv already got a boot liner in and normally this would be ok but this car i take a little bit more pride in then the others

Get a waterproof seat hammock -loops in between front and rear headrests and has slots for seatbelt fastenings. Some have side panels as well. Mine doesn't. But it was £6 from Lidl.

Those "things" are only suitable for small dogs, plus you are unable to secure the dog effectively. Having seen a dog killed in a car accident when it wasn't restrained and broke it's neck hitting the windscreen I think the best place for all dogs is restrained preferably in the boot area.

EJ, I suggest you go to a good quality pet shop and have a look at what they offer. There are plenty of cages available, but you need to check the measurements. I suspect with a lardy GS you will need a cage that fits with the seats down.

Sorry I think you misunderstand me the dog is resting on the back seat and is secured in to the seatbelt socket by a suitable leash on a harness The hammock serves no purpose to support the dog -only to protect the car interior. A dog in the boot has no protection from a rear end shunt. Cages are great and I use one but as OP explained difficult in her car.

Yup the seatbelts are fully accessible with the cover in place I have one. Works really well with muddy dogs and children, the one I got from aldi has a zip in the middle so half can be a hammock and someone can sit on the other side. Tried this out with a wet dog and a muddy 10yr old after I pushed him into a muddy pond to get the dog's ball back lol.

Fine, I misunderstood the description because there are hammocks available that fit from the rear headrests to the front ones with no means of restraint. My wife refuses to sell them at her shop!! What you are really describing are classed as seat covers.

When we got our Newfoundland pup we just got an octavia estate at the same time... can now fit two fully grown Newfys in it and its perfect.

I have a zip too. If not in a cage, dogs should always wear a seatbelt and attached to a suitable harness NOT the collar. In a sudden stop situation the dog could get it's neck broken and unrestrained flying through the car could kill or injure the other passengers as well as the dog.

Llanigraham -no worries, I should have made my original post clearer

Have a look for sloping cages - they're vertical on two sides and the other two sides slope inwards to a flat top:

It may have to be rather large for the G.S though.

Yeah that would be something im after.

As for folding the Octy seats down, do they go flat? or it just a case of the back rest going down and having the uneven floor?

Where are you based and how much do you want to pay?

The rear seat bases can be folded forwards and the backs folded near-flat. However that does leave a step of about an inch between the boot and the seat back - the boot being lower.

Based in Whitby North Yorkshire and wanting to spend about £50 or so

Yeah i knew there would be a little step but most of the cars iv have the back rest folds down but sit at an 45 degree angle so at least they go flat

If you have a vRS Octavia wouldn't you know if the seats went flat, without having to ask. How much do you pay for insurance for it at 22 years of age?

Well not really no as i have never needed to put the seats down and the car is outside, i am inside, it is cold and i cant be bothered to go see

As or insurance, im playing enough. Only due to the fact some idiot claimed against me last year so i lost all my years no claims

How long have you had the dogs? You have posts going back to last year talking about your vRS Octy, surely you must have looked at how the seats folded in that time. The very rapid skoda photo you have is the same as FUBARS is it the same car? It must cost a bomb for ins if you have lost all your NCB.

M8 why you being so harsh? Not everyone has the need to fold their seats down or know how to. My girlfriend has had a yaris for 7 years now and she was shocked when I folded her seats down last week when cleaning it she didn't know they could, nor has ever needed them down

I work with some dog handlers who have shaped cages for their cars... You might struggle for your budget with anything other than a generic cage.. Which probably won't be big enough.. Have a search for Lintrans .. They make cages to fit specific cars. :)

To be honest you are being abit nosey there, iv had the car since Sept 2011, i have always had hatch backs (Golfs, Clio ect) and i wanted something with more room for the dogs, at first i looked at the avant A4's but after realising the vRS is better in everyway i got that. On buying the vRS i fell in love straight away so have in a sense banned the dogs from it but now there is a proper need for the dogs to be transported.

As for insurance that is too nosey, personal finances are personal. No one needs to know how much i pay for my insurance and im getting pretty sick of people judging me from my age, yes 22 is not classed as mature but i had a Golf Anniversary at 19, which is an insurance group higher then the Octy.

Sorry forgot to multi quote there.

Yeah cages are mega expensive (still trying to work out why?) Before i had no problem with the dogs being without a cage in the back of the car aslong as they are securely fastened down but for some reason i have taken real pride in my Skoda so want to keep as clean as poss...not to mention the Shepherd is a long haired aswell :wonder: this is last resort!

What about the big heavy duty boot liners (called hatchbag liner?) that cover all the sides and floor of the boot and a manufacturers dog guard??

If they are contained in a cage the likelihood of snotty nose marks all over my clean windows are slim! :giggle:

They used to do alot of traveling before i got my Octy and even then they used to move about alot and had a habit of blocking my view mirror, getting hair pretty much every where and being sick in the most unaccessable places (most likely the seat anchoring point) and a concern for safety.

Iv got a load of tarporlin in the shed so i suppose i would fabricate that into the boot for the time being

You will probably struggle to get anything with your budget. I have a vrs estate and have just spent over £300 for a cage for my 3 dogs and I only got it that cheap as I was a repeat customer. They are very good though and stop the car smelling of dogs too

EJ,

If you can work some dimensions, I'll have a look in the catalogue in the wife's shop.

I suspect they are expensive because they don't make many, and there are lots of different sizes.

I think dogs (like people) get car-sick either when they can't see outside to orientate themselves or when they get swung around lots. Being a shepherd there should be no problem seeing outside.

Currently my dog is happy in the back seat. But the next new car will see a dog-guard up above the back seat and him travelling right in the back with some cushions and rugs like the rescue dogs do. Not for his benefit, but the cars. It'll stop him scratching the trim and nosing all the windows.
