Modified insurance beware comparison sites

Featured Replies

I have today insured the skip through sky insurance and have to say they (Alex) were a great help in sorting it out. All mods declared, 15000 miles business class 1 use, protected NCD £512 plus DD charge, a very favourable quote compared to the comparison sites (pardon the pun :D ). One thing came to light that people need to be aware of when using comparison sites, when entering mods, I selected engine chip performance increase >30% and got a quote of 700ish from admiral, however when I called them to see if they could do any better we went through all the details that has passed through to them from the online site the chip was showing as 0-10% they am mended this, please hold, sorry we can't cover you now. :D

So make sure you speak to a person as the online things are not always giving the right info and could cost you more than you bargain for.

The prices you get from going to them direct are always completely different from what they say on the comparison sites anyway

I found a problem when I was declaring optional extras (has to be done with Admiral)

Specialist/local brokers are always the way forward. It's a bit more effort to pick up the phone, but from my experience it's well worth it in the long run.

Buying insurance online is dead to me!

I found the specialists a lot cheaper than the main brokers, Swinton will not even cover a remap.

Thanks for the kind feedback, I have passed this on to my colleague Alex. If you have any queries I can help with, feel free to PM me at any time.

Kind regards

If you call them to "go over the quote" the price always goes up because the guy on the phone wants his bonus. Just take the cover online and be happy with the price. If you put all the right details in online then its a valid price.

That's the point of the thread. I put in the correct details but the comparison site it passing a 30%+ remap as a 0-10% so insurance would be void when I try to make a claim

I paid today 90p for insurance :giggle:

How the Hell did you pay only 90p?

I always ring up and ask. always get a better deal than online. I rang for my renewal last yr, having not had my own policy for the previous 10 months, as i had no need of car while back in uni. The girls I spoke to doctored my insurance history, as i had own policy, and named policy history. Also naming swmbo on the policy knocked money off on the phone, but added to it when i put her details in online for the quick quote....

How the Hell did you pay only 90p?

this is Romania my friend....I don't find 90 pounds too cheap...last year was 72pounds/year

P in England means pence not pounds lol

Mine is 1,800 pounds. I now officially hate you :)

I know...but we are not talking about pence for anything...at least related to cars

and my keyboard doesn't have the pound sign :) ....next time I'll be more careful, thanks!

Are you planning on making a claim though? As long as you fill the details in online and pay the money you are covered simples. If you bought the car in good faith and didnt know about it being remapped how can this be your fault? In fact you might not even know what a remap means like myself.. :giggle:

No, not planning on making a claim but no matter how carefully I drive there are always plenty of nutters out there trying to crash into me.

However, if someone should have an accident having filled in an online system WITH the correct details, it would suck to find out your insurance won't pay out because you failed to inform them that your policy is not listing your mods correctly. Far safer to talk to sky and be sure that you are covered properly.

If you are making a claim from a nutter that hit your car your insurance wont care about your mods as they are recovering losses from the other party. The inspector wont be able to tell by looking at your car that it has had a remap. If your car was stolen and trashed your insurance wont be able to prove it was mapped before it was stolen if they ever did find out which would be a miracle.

Not hard for them to plug into the OBD-II port and find out. I work in insurance and believe me insurers can and will come up with any excuse not to pay a claim, whether its an assessor from your insurer or the other guys.

Why would an inpsector plug into your obd if you were claiming from a third party. Its nothing to do with them if your car is mapped their driver has damaged it what ever its had done to it the same way if they hit your garden wall they wouldnt try to prove it was not very strong or well maintained all this is irrelevant. If they did download your map in a theft claim and find it had been tweaked how could they prove it was done to your knowledge it might have been done by the person who stole it.

Hilarious.

Pleading ignorance will not get you very far. If an insurer suspects foul play, they'll do very very careful investigations. It's not hard to tap into a car's brain and read max boost readings. You seem to have a loop hole planned for every eventuality but in reality there are no loop holes, especially when it comes to high value claims and personal injury/death. Trust me when I say, when you really want your insurance to cover you, you'll kick yourself for not disclosing a minor modification like a remap.

If you choose do non-disclose, fair enough but please do not recommend it to others on a public forum Joe.

The insurance company has to prove beyond resonable doubt in court that I knew about the modification. Simple.

not really, they can just decline to cover you

It says on your application for insurance in the small print, "to the best of your knowledge" you have told them the truth. If you do not know of a modification unless they can prove you lied you are insured.

You are just clutching at straws. Ignorance will not work.

"No, your honour, I had no idea that the button I pressed unleashed a 100 shot of NOS. "
