EGR Cooler

Featured Replies

I've been having on going issues of coolant loss and white smoke which is very visible in the cold.

Have had all the usual checks of head gasket being checked and all is fine. My garage believe the EGR cooler is probably faulty which is causing the problem. I know the EGR coolers are very expensive let alone the labour charge so I wondered about getting an EGR delete kit fitted instead would solve the problem? It seems a whole lot cheaper - realise this will probably require the EGR being mapped out but I think in the long run it would be cheaper as I already have DPF removed and remap from Shar.

Cheers

  • On the actual replacement of the EGR system, I'd highly recommend the Darkside kit. Has been on my car for about 10k now and working faultlessly. That's more than can be said for Allard parts I've us

  • Ive got an 09 plate and the previous company owner had the EGR cooler replaced for the same symptoms, dont have the invoice so cannot tell you how much was charged?

  • Cheers, hope it all works out for you. Mine has nearly 500,000kms on it, I can't really complain.

Think the part alone is about £300 and then there's fitting on top of that. Garage I use won't rip me off on that side of things but I'm thinking it'll probably be close to £500 in total. An EGR delete kit is £75 which I can probably fit myself and then remap shouldn't be a problem as I'm hoping my current one will just need a tweak by Shark Performance which shouldn't cost too much.

Hi,sorry for dragging up an old thread. Did you ever get to the bottom of this problem ?? I have a bad coolant leak and my mechanic thinks its the EGR cooler, these are over 300 euros. I wonder is there a bypass product for the EGR cooler to use in conjunction with the EGR delete (allard etc etc)??

No worries - nope I had the EGR bypass done but still losing coolant. Can't afford to keep throwing money at it anymore as I've now got yet another fault come up which is going to cost to put right. Once that's done I'm chopping in and getting something else. Gutted, as when it works I love it, but I've spent near on £2K trying to sort the various problems over the last 2 years.

Hope you get to the bottom of your problem!

Matt, try opening the coolant bottle cap at the end of your journey so at night it will release the pressure in the system and stop the coolant being forced into the head. this should stop you losing any more coolant

You are officially my favorite person in the world (at the moment)

Cheers.

LOL - no idea how it works - I just noticed it on their website a month or so ago when I was looking at EGR deletes. Apparently the Darkside EGR delete is superior to the Allard etc.

I think I will order this and the EGR delete tomorrow. My car is loosing coolant through the EGR cooler and a replacement one is over 300 euros + vat, its a no brainer really, I'll get the CAT knocked out while I'm at it.

Can't wait.

Well I ordered the above mentioned Darkside products which will be getting fitted at the end of the month while I am away. I'll report back when its done.

ha thats typical, couldnt see anything like this, so I just used some radiator pipe and clamps when I was doing mine on my partners Leon :-)

Nice one - I might do mine soon as I want to do away with the EGR before it goes faulty on me .......

How did it work out, was it worth doing ???

well if your EGR cooler is broken, absolutely, car admittedly does run a *little better without it also. Be warned its a fiddly job though, I was lucky my mate is a VAG technician so he was able to do it fairly quickly!

i had coolant loss a while back and i took it to shark thinking it was suspect turbo, had a turbo put on but it carried on smoking & using water. Next was the EGR cooler blanked off. Apparently it stopped smoking but started smoking when the car was picked and then thrown the engine + coil light on (faulty turbo temp sensor) had a new sensor put on and 2 weeks later it went again!

We come to the decision that it could only be a cracked head so in the end i ordered tablets from the US to crush up and put in the header tank, stopped the coolant loss straight away and im gonna leave it that way till either the head goes properly or i just decide to bite the bullet and pay out for a new head.

I was annoyed at the fact i had bought a new turbo and paid for the labour when it turned out it wasnt even that, that money could have gone towards a new head, but what can you do?

got anymore info/link on those tablets mate?

This is the link from the ones i got off ebay

a friend told me about them and i thought what the hell if it works it works if not im gonna need deep pockets! They have worked that good ive forgot ive even got a problem with the head lol

Interesting to note that. Had exactly same issues. Haven't looked at turbo but got the egr blanked off and still had coolant loss. 3 days later my exhaust gas temp sensor went (one before the turbo g235 fault code).

Haven't got this replaced yet but interested about those tablets. Think I'll chuck them in before getting it done.

One thing I will say if you don't already know is get hold of vcds and disconnect each 1 individually and see if you get a different fault code. Sometimes it brings up a fault code for 1 sensor but it's actually a different one. I've had 3 go upto now and they have all been the sensor in the turbo.

Just get a bottle of K-Seal from your local motor factors - works wonders on sealing small leaks

Do these products just go in the expansion bottle ??

Yep - normally you just throw the bottle of K-Seal in the expansion tank, put the lid back on and go for a drive until you are up to temperature and the thermostat has opened fully.

Job done.

yeah suppose i could of lol.. only reason i went for the tablets was because i knew someone had used them on a pourous head and they actually slowed down the coolant loss
