cooling issues

Featured Replies

I have a 2005 2.0L PD Octy, 70,000 miles.

Purchased from main dealer just over one year ago.

Around 6 months ago, under Warranty the dealer has replaced both radiator cooling fans as slow speed run was not working.

Car has been apparently fine since. However today I did a 200 mile journey (with no issues), the vehicle then stood for around 6 hours.

When I started the vehicle again within a couple of seconds of the engine startingf the MIL is on and the oh so helpful "emmisions workshop" waring flagged up.

Now I notice that the radiator fans are not working at all, no slow or fast run in spite of the indicated (from dash diags) engine oil getting into the high 90's.

I understand that it is probable the CTS may have failed giving rise to the MIL being on, I cant verify this until I get back home to my VCDS.

So... could the coolant temp. sensor failure prevent the fans from being switched on? would the ECU not determine that high oil temp would justify switching the fans on?

Or fan control unit?

Any constructive thoughts or suggestions most welcome.

Sorry for being a numpty, whats the "MIL" you refer to??

My fans are not coming on either, I have replaced the thermostat and the water temperature sender and they still don't work. Next thing to change is the fan switch unit and eventually the fans. I don't mean to hijack your thread but I will be keeping a close eye on it for possible solutions. Cheers.

Problem turned out to be 10A fuse (F8) blown, probably caused by intake flap motor. This fuse also supplys power to the fan control unit, hence no fans!

Replaced fuse and cleared DTC's, so far all remains ok.

I may remove the intake flap unit and give it a clean in case the problem was caused by the flap sticking and stalling the motor. Also I understand this unit is somewhat prone to failure so I may have to replace it.

yes, I replaced that fuse aswell but I don't think it helped. I must check to see if its blown again. Are you sure it controls the fans, there is no mention of it in the manual.

If the intake flap keeps blowing the fuse and causing me problems, would it be advisable to try a slightly larger fuse ???

Anybody got a part number for the fan control unit ?? 2.0Tdi (BKD)

Without doubt, the 10A fuse that protects the intake flap motor wiring also supplies the fan control unit.

If this fuse is blown, the radiator fans will not run.

Thats actually very good news for me, cheers. I thought I had a bigger problem.
