Kiss my vRS 3rd brake light cover

Featured Replies

Hi People, from a web search I can't seem to find anyone who has sold the 'Kiss my vRS' 3rd brake light mask since about 2008. Does anyone know anybody still selling them or does anyone have a spare lying around that they'd like to offload? I'd be most grateful. I don't think I'm annoying other cars enough with my batman-style smoke screen and blistering pace from the superior Skoda technology, I think they need the chavvy brake light shone in their face as well. :)

Cheers, I've pinged them a message on eBay, anyone else have any ideas or ideally one in their possession?

Can get one made up for you

but why would you want to reduce the visibility of a brake light, which is there for the safety of the car and your self?

also is it an issue at MOT time like smoked lenses on rear lights?

Lol I love the mot questions that arise on here.

If it was, I'm sure all 3rd brake lights would have to be a set size and brightness to meet these visibility requirements, which they're not. Many cars don't even have them.

They do have to meet requirements, and any cars without them must be at least a decade old as they've been required for European type approval since 1998. Brake lights and tail lights aren't all the same size, but they still have to meet standards.

Type approval rules on third brake light state they must be (all the values I don't know are covered in ECE R48):

  • Higher than the vehicles regular brake lights, by what amount I cannot recall
  • A minimum height from the ground also, again I do not remember the exact value
  • Mounted on the centreline of the vehicle unless there is a panel gap/door which prevents this, in which case they be laterally offset by a maximum of 15 cm (you'll see this on some vans)
  • Must output a minimum amount of lumens, again I forget the value

High level brake lights are on the MOT test and your car can fail on them, same as any brake light. Official details available by clicking on this lovely underlined text, but to save your clicky finger: "Additional stop lamps fitted and connected must be tested. Where extra lamps are fitted and there is doubt as to whether they are connected, the benefit of this doubt should be given to the presenter". Points B, C, D and E in the far right column on my posted link will all fail any stop lamp, which includes your third/high level brake lamp, unless you disconnect it and show the tester they're not connected to the brake light circuit (remember they're not allowed to dismantle), then it's not testable anymore and hence not a fail (it's not longer considered a lamp for the purposes of the test).

You might sneak through a modified stop lamp on the MOT, depending on the tester of course, but I can't say I'd recommend it. They're a safety feature and designed to make you more visible. Can just see an insurance company wriggling out of a rear-end shunt claim using this sort of thing as an excuse!

Personally I wouldn't modify the 3rd brake light, I wouldn't even smoke the rear lights - I'm a bit anal about safety and wouldn't want to increase the risk of a rear end shunt by reducing light output. The 3rd brake light was primarily designed to reduce accidents involving high HGV's etc who may not be looking down at ground level and also provide an additional point of failure in the event of a brake bulb failure etc.

Also you can imagine insurance companies trying use any excuses to get out of a claim - my client didn't see your client was braking because of a silly boy racer mask in 3rd brake light etc. You have to remember you have to cater for the idiots on the road who don't pay attention, it's far better to be safe than sorry, regardless of what you might be able to "get away with" in the MOT.

No its not an M.O.T Issue at all. Being a 3rd brake light it's not legal to be there can take it out if you want. I covered mine up on my old Polo, went throguh every m.o.t like that and had police behind me nothing was ever said.

Yes it will fail the MOT test. VOSA rules state that any vehicle manufactured with a 3rd brake light must have one present and it must operate correctly by illuminating when the brake pedal is depressed and extinguish when brake pedal is released, additionally no more than 50% of the 3rd brake light may be obscured or fail to illuminate, as this will result in a failure.

I got my info online but if in doubt, ring an MOT test station for confirmation.

Couldn't agree more :)

Very childish i would expect to see similar things on saxos and corsas not a respectable vrs :/

+1 something a chav would fit. No offence intended. Just my opinion.

I'm seeing more and more posts recently which have a chavvy nature.... but I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that!

Or due to the vRS becoming older and therefor cheaper, the previous 'Saxo' crew can now afford one :(

Oh, and I am not referring to anyone in this topic or anyone else in particular.

Would not fail an MOT.

me personally, i would not consider this

for me a third / high level brake light has a proven history of reducing rear end shunts, so why put a tacky looking bit of vinyl over it to annoy people and reduce your own safety

just to me says childish driver avoid, same as a saxo driver with a baked bean can (all noise no go) exhaust

Think it looks cool, 8 years ago anyways. No this would not fail an MOT! Yet anyways, but like said it looks chavvy and will reduce visibility. I myself do not understand why people like sticking silly stickers on the car, I like the subtle mod or the sleeper look ;)

Anyways if you still want one I can have one made up for you exactly the same for £10
