A Rattle!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've read about a few rattles here and there, but mine has just started, Well it's a creak actually.

It comes from the dash just in front of the steering wheel. On the dash just underneath the speedo & rev counter there is a upside down 'U' shaped piece of plastic. It's not of the same type of material as the rest of dash & feels a bit brittle.

This creaks and can be heard over the sound of the 2.0 diesel - if I press & hold it, it stops.

Can I do anything to solve it (apart from a pair of earplugs) or is a visit to the nice dealer needed?

Thanks

Mike

Hi, have you adjusted the steering wheel recently? ( or maybe someone else has ) the plastic cover on the top ( over where the ignition is ) sits very close to the bit of "U" shaped plastic you mention, maybe try moving the wheel and relocking might fix it.

I have had several rattles and creaks on my Yeti-they all seem to last for a week and then go away!.Maybe something to do with the change in climate and temprature etc?.

All the rattles in my Yeti and Fabia have been cured by the dealer.... They spray silicone dash polish onto the offending area and the rattle has gone, at least until the silicone spray wears off!

My Yeti has a rattle on the back nearside seat or door seal, I can't be too sure as I can't reach when driving to try and stop it.

I'll try adjusting the steering wheel and giving the trim a spray with a silicone spray and see how I get on.

Thanks all.

Iv'e found using an old trick of wrapping electrical tape round the door latch plates gets rid of the odd rattle or two.

Hi Mike,

I have noticed the same problem with my Yeti, very annoying on a brand new car! havnt had the time or inclination to look into yet but I was suspecting that 'u' shaped plastic area aswell.

It's amazing, just hold onto the plastic trim and it stops! Never had a rattle within reach before.

I had the there-one-day-gone-the-next plastic-sounding rattle from behind the speedo in the first week of my short ownership. Took it to the dealers and unfortunately did not get to talk to the technicians but apparently they found some "excess plastic" behind the dash which they "trimmed back" and added a bit of "soundproofing felt". I took that to probably be cable ties flapping about. Whatever it was they fixed it.

I was also starting to get an occasional rattle in the n/s rear door but by this time I had become disillusioned with the Yeti and it is one for the next owner to sort out!

Mine has something like this (assuming I understand your description anyway). The only rattle I have, but a persistent and annoying one at that.

I've located mine as being the metal bar you pull up on to slide the rear seats fore/aft. If I reach behind my seat when I hear it, and apply some upward pressure to said metal bar, as if to slide the seats, it goes away.

When I can be arsed, I plan to pull the seat out and have a look at it.

I had a rattle in the drivers door. It sounded like 2 spanners were rattling round inside. It disappeared as soon as the window was opened between a crack and fully open.

The dealer fixed it this week. I think the door window assembly had been a little loose for a long time, as when I shut the door with the window open, it rattled more than I thought it should. All sorted now. Nice and quiet inside now. Just an annoying slight buzzing sound coming from somewhere at certain revs which I can't locate.

You have described this exactly, I tried the seat adjust handle today and the rattle stopped. seats out tomorrow to see if i can stop it.

I was absolutely sure that there is a rattle behind the front console in my Yeti. I even took off the gear stick cover and the box under the console. And found nothing. Then, by chance, I lifted the passenger seat a bit. And the rattle was gone! After a while it came back but I already knew where to look. It turns out the rattle comes from the seat back. Besides, the seat back itself (on both front seats) plays a bit, but after shaking it back and forth, the play goes away. I haven't found out what exactly is wrong with the seat that it rattles, but sort of learnt how to silence that rattle.

After that there was a rattle that seemed to come from the right rear door. And it turned out it was comming... from the back of the middle rear seat :) Again, the rattle mysteriously went away after adjusting the inclination.

When I can be arsed, I plan to pull the seat out and have a look at it.

5 or so months later, I could finally be arsed fixing it. Old thread, I know, but I figure I should write it down somewhere in case someone is ever searching for the solution.

Took the seat out, starting tapping the parts of the seat that connect with the car - simulating where vibrations enter the seat. Narrowed it down to tapping on the front left side of the seat, and could hear a secondary noise other than the hammer striking the metal.

Basically there's a large nut on a bolt which seems to connect the bottom part of the seat frame to the rails. There's two of these - left and right. I tightened mine a quarter to half a turn, tapped, and the secondary noise was gone. Put seat back in car, went for drive - rattle:gone.

So .. if you ever get that same tinny rattle from one of the back seats, try this.

If it every comes back I'll use some threadlock on it.

Thanks a lot! I thought I was the only one with rattle box yeti. I'll try fixing my passenger door and right back seat the way you adviced. Than I'll have to deal with just two more things. One is strange sound, something like creaking each time I press accelerator. This sound is comming somewhere under a gear or handbrake area. Can't say for sure. The other thing is braking. I bought a brand new yeti, but now, with 7000 km I don't think I should still hear brakes. Any suggestions? Thanks. Jazz

What do you mean by hear brakes?

If I leave mine for more than a day now they sound rough for the first couple of applications. To be expected as they start corroding in the damp air as soon as they cool down. Nothing you can do about it.

I mean hear-hear like being brand new brakes. In wet/fog I hear them even more loud, especially rear brakes. But they are not new anymore and I don'think I should hear them so loudly. During rainy days if I open window I can hear them grating loud. (hope I could describe properly - not native English speaker, as you can see).

Right, so you hear them grating.

Is this when you first drive the car in the morning, or all the time?

See my note above, by "rough" I meant grating. It is normal if the discs have some corrosion on them after being left standing.

I don't know what "being left standing" should mean in my case. Well, I drive my car every day- it's never left standing for a longer time. But, overnight I keep it in garadge and during the day it's standing outside during my working hours.

I guess I hear brakes louder soon after I turn on an engine, but I can't be sure. Most of the time I listen cd player, and home-work distance is too short to be sure. But I think you're right, that happens after few hours of standing.

I'm getting something similar with mine too! First of all it seemed if I pressed the silver trim to the right of the steering wheel this stopped it (as long as I applied pressure) then pressing on the silver trim to the left of the centre console produced a "snap" sound and the creak stopped for a week but it is back now!!! I have noticed the instrument binnacle is solid as as a rock on the RHS but moves around quite a bit around the left hand dial - I think this is where the noise is coming from so a trip to the dealer has to be arranged through the fleet company! Let me know how you get on.

I have had the rattle or creek from the speedo area from new, it has been to the dealers three times to fix it, the technician at Valley Services was puzzled at first but after removing the u shaped piece of plastic above the steering wheel, he found that the screws holding the dials in place had been overtightend causing the plastic to stress when the car went over bumps in the road causing the rattle. He slackend off the screws only slightly and the noise has gone. Its been gone for over 3 weeks now!!! After 10 months and 13000 miles we know have a silent Yeti

I've no idea if mine rattles. With 2 kids under 4 crying and wanting awful music, wife shouting to slow down on bends (depsite the fitment of 4WD and ESP...) and the cat moaning in his carrier.

I dream of the chance for a quiet drive to see if I do have a rattle or 2 !!!!

Yes the rattle is still there. The 'U' shaped bit of plastic over the steering column & the poor plastic of the instruments surround seem to be the culprits.

Must take it in sometime, but since I have quite a few more miles to go before service, I think it can wait.

I gave some work colleagues a lift up to Cardigan the other day. Up over the Preseli mountains, they liked the car but didn't appreciate my spirited driving. I did say that I thought it unwise to get a takeaway from McDonald's in Haverfordwest beforehand!

The guy who owns the local tyre fitting shop drove it into his workshop to get the tracking checked (after I hit that kerb!), he was very impressed with the quality inside. Seems the Yeti has another admirer, maybe I'll see a Yeti tyre van locally in the near future?

Had this rattle frustration thinking that I'm the only one with this rattle yeti problem. But, thanks to all of you I belive this may be solved. Thanks once again!

And, today I had a peak into orher car owners forums. Noticed many posts about rattle in Kia sportage and Hyundai.

I don't think anyone, even Rolls Royce, have EVER made a vehicle that is totally rattle free.

A friend used to work at the Bentley dealers in Knutsford and he always used to tell about one they had that even went back to the factory to try a find the cure. Seem to remember that one was a loose wire in the integrated phone system!

Loudest rattle in mine is either my tool box or her blasted handbag!
