16" or 17" wheels. Pros and Cons? (also interested to hear from those who drive 17")

Featured Replies

I think that is a reply that others got, BUT they responded that they knew it had been done, as authorised by SkodaCS, and that they threatened to escalate the request.

  • decidedly happy after 44k with the 17" tyres/rims/wheels/brain. I have always suspected that there's a bit of Emperor's New Clothes about the desire for the 16" tyres. I also have great faith in S

  • There's no need to be rude ... I haven't made that many posts in this thread!

This is the stock reply from the "Customer Services" script. If a query doesn't fit the script this reply is the result. Persevere, others have got a positive result so there is a precedent.

Thanks for this. Its cheered me up a bit. What do you mean by escalate the request? Where? To whom?

Email back to Charlotte Wormald stating that you wish to escalate the matter for the attention of Mark Fox, as you know that your request is possible as others here have done it, and that iff you don't get a proper answer you will be in contact with SkodaCS.

Refer them to the article in Auto Express a few months ago where they said they would do it.

If you haven't got the link pm TP for it as he was one of the people interviewed by them.

That is very helpful. Thanks

Dear colleagues here is my experience according to this topic:If we talk about summer ones My vote definitely goes for the R17 off course and only in combination with: 215 x 55 x R17 tires.

From my point of view this combination gives the best balance between ride comfort, vehicle stability and not in the last place the tires price.

In this situation the cars ground clearance rise from 180mm to 190mm, the aquaplaning factor is also a little beat better, you have a tallest tire wall so you do not need to be a quiet careful with street holes and it is also a big advantage between the fabric 225 x 50 x R17, and yes the fabric one is uncomfortable to ride.

If You ask about legality of tire size changing within this limits yes it is OK, (+2%) allowed in my Country is +-3% compared with originals.

For Winter I use 205 x 60 x R16 .

I like driving on tarmac round corners. Love the 17s and the 50 profile dunlop sport 01s they came with. No complaints from passengers about ride quality. Our Polo on 50 profile tyres is more jiggly but probably fixable with aftermarket dampers. Main justification for 16s would be to get better off road tyres.

I think this topic has been done to death!

It is very simple - 16" provides higher profile more comfortable ride, 17" provides better grip on the limit - you pays your money and takes your choice. If anyone is in any doubt then test drive both tyres and make your own mind up.

Why do you think the 17" tyres provide more grip? In a like for like situation, I doubt they would.

The difference is the 17" tyres will feel a little stiffer due to the lower profile. This feel doesn't translate into more grip, in rough corners it could mean less grip.

Because a 17" tyre has a larger footprint!!

We,ve just replaced our 170 4x4 (17" 225x50 .) with a 1.6 Greenline (16" 205x55.)

The 16" wheels are a bit softer around town ,Pot holes, manhole covers ,etc.

The 17" had sharper handling at speed ,with quicker turn in.

Basically what everyone else has found.

Either are very acceptable.

You pays your money and takes your choice....

Quick edit.

I know that when I get some winter tyres , and eventually replacements, the 16x205x55 will give me much more choice for less money.

At the risk of outpedanting the pedant ... it's not the 17" that gives the bigger footprint but the 225mm. :hi:

Must admit I thought he'd gone back under his antipodean bridge :)

No it doesn't, just a different shaped footprint.

Divide the weight on the tyre by the pressure within and that's the size of the contact patch. The tyre distorts until it's got that much carcass supporting the weight.

900lb per corner on a 30psi tyre, you've got around 30 square inches in contact.

Bump that to 35psi and you've got around 26 square inches in contact.

Drop it to 25psi and you've got around 36 square inches in contact.

Neither the rim size, nor the tyre width decides the size of the footprint, but they do influence the shape.

ZZzzzzzzzz.

True Bob, but I wasn't sure how pedantic to be with a Zeland Newydd "egg spurt"

You do talk some ball ****s!!

The footprint of a 225/50r17 is approximately 5% bigger than a 205/55r16!!

It is both slightly longer and wider.

If you took your last sentance literally then a 195/80r15 would also have the same footprint.

I suggest that before you start spouting about tyres (AGAIN) you do some proper research.

Doesn't matter what size your tyres are, the contact patch is determined by the air pressure within. Think about it a little, it's simple physics.

Force(weight) = pressure*area.

Area = force(weight)/pressure.

A 195/80R15, a 205/65R16 and a 225/50R17 with the same pressure inside and the same weight on them have the same contact area.

Feel free to prove me wrong.

Graham, I think we should take this advice. :sun:

I think you are right Bob.

Stop ganging up, boys.

It's un-Yeti-like behaviour!

So by your logic one of those little skinny space saver spare wheels and tyres will have the same contact patch with the road if it's inflated to the same pressure as a tyre that's double the width?

I don't think so. Your calculations are missing a vairiable for tyre width.

Your calculations are missing a vairiable for tyre width.

... and, strangely, length.
