16" or 17" wheels. Pros and Cons? (also interested to hear from those who drive 17")

Featured Replies

Can I ask how many of you guys chose 16" wheels? It isn't an official option - but apparently can be achieved if you speak to the right person at Skoda UK. I had thought of doing this - but honestly it all seems too complicated, and I cant help feeling that it would not speed (but would probably slow) an already long wait for delivery. And to be honest, when I test-drove the Yeti it had 17" wheels and I cant say I noticed it as an uncomfortable ride - but then I had nothing to compare it with. In fact I didnt eveb know 16" wheels was possible until I joined this Forum. I know I could test-drive an S or E model (which have 16" as standard) - but my dealer seldom has them, and never as a demonstrator. He said they sell far fewer of them than the higher spec models.

When I spoke to my Dealer (very helpful guy) about changing to 16" he simply said that the vast majority of Yetis he had sold had been delivered with 17" wheels (except the base models which have 16") and his impression was that most/all customers were happy with them. But he also said there was nothing to prevent me contacting Skoda UK about it.

So my car will have the standard 17" wheels. Is this a mistake I will regret, or a good decision? Do they really give a significantly harder ride? Do those of you with 17" wheels (which I would imagine is the great majority) find them perfectly OK or (hopefully) even better than 16".

I know that some people prefer the 'look' of the 17". That has zero significance to me. Reliability, performance, economy, comfort, safety (not necessarily in that order) are all that matters to me.

Hi, mine has 17" wheels and I find the ride good, but can be a bit jiggly at times. I drive on mostly poorly surfaced Pembrokeshire country roads. Roadholding is 'on rails' and feels very safe. I know some on the site prefer the 16" wheels to improve the ride comfort.

Mine is a 2.0 diesel 4x4 DSG. I'm in Somerset on holls in September, will you have got yours by then?

Like MikeWales, my Yeti runs 17" wheels and having done 40k+ miles I am quite happy with them, BUT, if I was buying a Yeti now I'd go for the 16" wheels on two counts:

1/ I could actually buy some proper All Terrain tyres, which aren't available in 17"

2/ The cost and choice of normal road tyres is better in 16".

Overall I doubt that most drivers would notice the difference in road holding between the two sizes.

And to be honest Mike, is it that difficult to send an email to the previously named people requesting the change. I cannot see any way it is going to delay your order as all it ends up with is a slightly different barcode on the build document as it goes down the line.

If I could do it by email I would be more inclined to have a go. the thought of actually trying to contact anyone by phone . . . 'not in the office, he will call you back' (that's a laugh), or hours on hold listening to 'music'.

I wonder if anyone has names AND email addresses.

Also I think I would need the actual Skoda Order number? which I don't have.

Happy with my 17 inches

I am on 17 inch wheels and love them. I would agree with Llanigraham about the All Terrain option though; however that is something I have learned (am still learning) to live with. Tarmac, and using the power, dictate my preference.

Careful Bob, or it's the corner.

I have the Dunlop 17" tyres and have had no issues, I will probably go for Vector 4 season when I need to change.

The ride can indeed be a bit 'jiggly' however its not too firm.

On smooth motorways they are perfectly fine.

Mikespike - Didn't I give them to you on the other thread a couple of days ago. http://www.briskoda....h-wheel-option/ #29 ?

But to save you looking it up, here they are again:

I emailed Robert Hazelwood about wheels after my dealer had said 'No go'. They only got the order after Mark Fox phoned to give them the OK - which actually happened while I was out test-driving (much to their surprise, because they didn't know of my email!).

If you want it, don't hang around, just send the email.

Not being funny, but what does 'jiggly' mean? A couple of people have used that word in relation to 17".

It really isn't that difficult, if you search the forum for Mark Fox you will find all the information you need regarding contacting SUK.

I know for a fact that names, email addresses and the contact number for SUK have already been supplied to you in earlier answers to your previous posts on this subject.

I have PM'd you a number of times about the process and I get the feeling that despite all the advice you have already been given you are still seeking more confirmation regarding the 16 /17" debate.

Its all about personal preference, I have opted for the 16's because that is what I wanted, for all the reasons previously mentioned.

Others have chosen the 17's (or not been that bothered).

As for your order number, your dealer will have that, it takes a day or so after you have placed the order as it isn't generated until the order has made its way onto the SUK system

Doesn't mean anything to me, I have asked this also. The only thing I can think of is people changing from a family saloon type vehicle to a Yeti, where the suspension, ride height etc is different, think it's "jiggly". As far as I'm concerned it's nothing to do with tyre size.

I do agree that there aren't as many choices with 17" as 16", but that is of no concern to me.

Yes I am still seeking advice. I have heard a lot (very helpful) from those who have opted for 16". But not much for those who have (either deliberately or by default) the 17". In my opinion one can never have too much information - provided it is balanced. I am interested to hear (as I am now doing) from those who have 17".

Well . . . a car moving up and down with a short jerky motion doesn't sound too much like fun  more like a bucking bronco

I beg to differ!

Yep me3!

If you haven't looked there are some useful videos showing "jiggly" on the 'net, normally involving rapid up and down movement and ladies anatomy.

Posting them would result in a ban!!

I suspect Bob has been looking at them.....................

Bob!! Careful!!! Just because he's on Late's this week!!

Edit - Sorry, Bob - he's not

A long haul. Son works Earlies, Lates and Nights, 8 hours at a time.

What would probably be most helpful is to hear from those who test drove both options and decided to stick with the 17"s. Not sure that I've seen anyone in that category here.

I have the 17"s and the ride is both firmer *and* less bumpy than my old Octy, which I put that down to it still being on the original shocks. I have just completed the run-in period (932 miles = 1500kms) today and I'm very happy with the way it copes with the local rural roads. I can't say the potholes and uneven surfaces are unnoticeable, but the car seems to soak them up without passing on much to me.

If we worked that we'd have to do a third more shifts, and as it is we only work 14 shifts in a 28 day period.

Back on thread; even off road I think the ride is good on 17" rims. It's a lot more comfortable than a friends Sportage.

Mikespike. My diesel 4x4 has 17" wheels and I am entirely happy with the ride and roadholding. I have 16" wheels with winter tyres and can give you this view, the car steers more precisely and feels firmer on the road with the 17s and is a little less precise and a little bit softer on the 16s.

No one can really give you the information you need to make your decision though.

Whether or not you would prefer one to the other is a question only you can answer.

Whether or not it will make any appreciable difference will depend on your ability to feel the difference. That will depend on your past experience and the type of driving you are used to and which you intend to do.

If you are coming from a background of an older car with the deterioration in springs and dampers that is normal (and so gradual that you will not have noticed it) either will be just fine. If you have been used to a car with harsher ride either will feel luxurious.

If you have been used to a less than 5 year old good quality car with a good ride quality you might find 16s are better.

So unless you try for yourself or give a great deal more information all you will hear are the preference of others who's experience and requirements may well be different.

You found the test drive fine and until you picked up on others preferences you didn't even know what tyre profiles or sizes meant.

I'd recommend you find something else to worry about
