Best Insurer for a very modified VRS - IE KO4, 328BHP!

Recommended Posts

Morning all,

I need to get some insurance quotes for Muckipups octavia Vrs.

I'm 43 with over 10 years NCB and a clean licence, so I'm sure I wont have difficulty getting insured, it's just who is likely to offer best value?

many thanks in advance.

Hello again, Martin :hi:

I currently use Sky insurance who broker for Chaucer and specialise in modified cars. They would certainly be worth asking as they should have the car and all the modifications on their system.

They have given me the best quotes and we must be a very similar profile in terms of driver.

Defo try the site sponsors.

I have a moddified mk2 vrs and have used Brentacre for a number of years as they were the cheapest price but this year switched to Adrain Flux as they beat Brentacre by over £100 (massive difference). For me Sky and Greenlight were very expensive.

Theres no substitute for shopping around and between those four you should get an idea on what you will have to pay.

Good luck and enjoy the car :-)

Yeah go back to the most competitive ones and tell them you got a cheaper wuote and up to a point they will match it or beat it by a little.

Also ive notice that most of these guys have the modded policy with Highway so the actual insurance company is the same which ever broker you go through.

(there are other insurance companies but over the last 5 years having different modded cars ive always been with highway)

Just renewed mine. My car is almost identical to yours and I'm 25. I paid £750 with 4 years NCB. Given my age I thought that was highly competitive. That's with Adrian flux, and my previous insurer, Sky, wanted £1200 for the renewal.

Greenlight initialy quoted me £525, but when I called them to confirm all the mods were recorded properly they said yes, 328bhp etc,etc..... what have you been driving for the last 12 months?....

So I told them, and they said ''in that case the 'experience discount' won't count!'' and the quote shot up to nearly £800 again. Apparently, you need to have been driving a 200bhp+ car continously for the last 12 months and be able to provide insurance evidence of this for the so called 'experience discount' to count. Despite the fact that I can provide historic evidence of a leon Cupra MK2, a Golf GTI Ed 30 etc this doesn't count.

I'm 43, the wife's 33, we've both got clean licences, live in a good postcode area and I've got two lot's of no claims, one of 7 years and one with 14 years !!!

Very frustrated as I met Dave today and drove the car and it's a cracker, and Dave's a thoroughly nice bloke. I haven't given up yet, but I'm getting frustrated as this is the only thing holding me back : (

It doesn't help much but we could have quoted for a modded VRS based on your previous experience with the Cupra. However, because the bhp has jumped so much that's quite an increase and too rich for us I'm afraid.

If you get something else give us a call.

Thanks for your honesty!

What I don't really understand is the fact that this car has a fully complete package of modifications that include major handling and braking improvements, not to mention the installation of an LSD all completed by one of the UK's most respected tuners. I can insure a remapped Cupra TFSI (240 standard - about 290 mapped) on standard suspension and brakes with no LSD for under £400 - I'm fairly sure the Octavia is the safer car in most conditions ?

Surely the law of diminishing returns comes into play even with insurance premiums, eg, does claims experience show that 330 bhp cars get written off more than 290 bhp cars?

Incidentally, this rant isn't aimed at anyone in particular!!!

As we say on a number of forums, we understand that a balanced modification package often results in improved safety. Insurers will ask themselves though why you want to do those mods (they only see that you're getting tooled up to drive faster). We're on your side when negotiating with insurers. Sometimes we win, sometimes they don't budge but we'll always do our best for you and be honest if we think it's a definite no-go. No point wasting your time.

I much prefer the direct, non timewasting approach!

Thanks for all the input on this,

Have gone with Sky in the end, Many thanks to Luke at Sky for helping me out

I haven't bought car insurance outside of money supermarket or compare the meerkat dot com for years, but obviously buying a car of this type necessitates the old 'phone round, and around, and around........' approach :drunk:

Got to say, if Sky's renewal quote next year is sensible I'll just stick with them

It's my renewal time too, how much did Sky quote if you don't mind me asking? So far green light has quoted £539 through Highway
