Monte 1.2 TSi, what are they like to own

Featured Replies

I'm starting to think about replacing the wifes car and both she and I like the Monte and we both like diesels but for the sort of driving that she does I'm not getting her a DPF equipped diesel so, with the much lauded efficiency and torque of the 1.2 TSi engine this could be the one to go for and am looking for opinions on what they're like to live with.

What real World mpg are people getting, do they drink oil, what's the ride like, is the 70 underpowered, is there much difference between the 85 and the 105 etc?

We have an 85 so our son can drive it. Quite a perky little car on the motorway and works well around town and in the lanes. And to be honest i quite enjoy driving it (i prefer the manual g/box to the DSG in the vRS). Fuel economy is not bad returning about 45 mph on my run from Southampton to Bristol which is covered on dual carriageways and the M4.

Mine is not the monty but same engine.I got 1.2 TSI (86)ps get about 45mpg sometimes 48 only put 1/4 ltr of oil in. in 10000 miles great pulling power for a 1.2 (86) If you would like a lot more get the 105ps.The monty is an se. But you get sports suspention/seats body kit 16in wheels mdi and so on

Thanks both :)

As far as i am aware the 1.2 aint known for drinking oil might be wrong thou. There was a recall on some for a software update an sumthing done with a part attached to turbo. But this wouldnt matter if you are buying new as it would have been done.

I hear the guys who have the monte love them, maybe try to get test drive

I personally love the black lining around wheel archs etx

Cheers, don't think we'll be buying new but thanks for the info. I don't know if I should announce this to a vRS owner and as a possible future user of this part of Briski but I think the Monte looks better than the vRS *runs and hides*

That said there are some very nice Elegance models for sale at the mo' :wonder:

If i had the money i would love the black strip fitted like the Monte hasto my VRS

We have a 10 plate 1.2Tsi (105) in SE form. Its my wifes but I drive it now and again.

Plenty of poke and reasonable of fuel as others have said. Not put 1 drop of oil in it since buying brand new, level has been constant.

Just had its 2nd service, £129 which was similar to the first. 12'000 miles covered, back tyres look unworn, fronts will last a little longer but not much, certainly will be changed by 15k

Much better car than the fiat it relaced, and will be keeping it for a long time

Ooh, also had the recall for the part soneone mentioned earlier, not that anh difference has been noted.

And its surprisingly roomy inside, for a small hatch!

mike has a 105 tsi 1.2 (not monte) and you'd be suprised how good that engine is... quick, good to drive, good fuel economy ect ....

and they dont use oil at all as far as I'm aware.....

but then, I have the vRS, I also get 45 mpg (often more if I try) and mine doesn't use oil either ;)

Driving down to Le Mans this year in the Monte, i was following one of our group who was driving a vRS. His comment was 'I love the car all in black and it looks far better than the vRS'. Personally i have to agree with him as the Monte does look pretty awesome.

Also, we have had a number of callers at the house when both cars are parked on the drive, and all would take the Monte over the vRS. When i tell them that the vRS has over twice the power of the Monte they would still take it.

In an ideal world, I'd have the Monte with all its little sill and arch extensions, the engine from the vRS, the interior from the vRS (it is trimmed better) and a MANUAL gearbox.

Didnt realise monte had different archs, thought black pack set it apart from the rest aswell as a slight change in front bumper

Hi, been a member on here for years but not been on in a while, we have just traded our 59 plate Fabia 1.4TDi Sport in against a 61 plate Fabia Monte Carlo 1.2TSi and we absolutely love it ! Only had it 5 days and it's a great little car :-) gets lots of looks too ! Can't really comment on mpg etc but all I can say is GO BUY ONE

I have had my TSI 2 years now and love it, it is better than my old Mk1 16v

I was so sorely tempted by a Monte but figured it might struggle a bit loaded up for long motorway runs. It does certainly look the "biz". If it had the 1.4 122PS lump, i'd have had one in a heartbeat...but i'm so happy with the vRS! Not difficult to get over 40mpg from it unless spending all the time at 80-ish (plus a bit of fun time).

Thanks folks, much appreciated :)

Bought the 105 TSI Monte Carlo 3 weeks ago and what can I say? I am in love with it. Lots of poke and does a decent 42 mpg around town. Not had many chances to take it out on the motorway but had one run on the A road and there is plenty of poke to 70mph. Just swapped the RCD 310 sound system to a RCD 510 DAB and it sounds totally fabulous. Buy it definitely. :)

Ta muchly

The recall btw was for an ECU update and a shim adding to the turbo.

I think there had been issues with bit of a stutter. Check it's been done. If not then just get it done before you get the car FOC.

Cracking little engines and would have one in a heartbeat. Would have to be a DSG for me though.

Had ours for just short of 12mnths and it's not been a minutes trouble, not used any oil either (just short of 10k).

A nice free revving engine that can give you mid 50's mpg on a steady run, mid 30's for me about town and the worst I've got was low 20's one morning .

Quite happy above legal limits on the m/way but economy does suffer.

Overall, very pleased with ours, just watch the wheels when parking.

I've got the diesel - it's brilliant. looks even better since I had it cleaned by the local Eastern European operation!

My Dad has a 1.2 TSI (Elegance I think) and is always complaining about economy, mostly because it is nowhere near the Govt figure. BUT, Mum drives it 90% of the time for her 3 mile commute to work...I think he gets about 40mpg.

You don't mention what kind of driving it would do - I have never had a DPF fault in the last 3 of my cars (Skoda Diesels), but as I now am not doing a lot of miles, I may have to watch for it, or use it as an excuse to take it for extended raggings!

The wheels (17", not 16, at least on my CR TDI 105) are great, but a little to "gappy" for me and the piano black detailing (roof, wing mirrors, wheelarches, chin spoiler, diffusor) really set off my Red car.

Interior is great - I've always wanted a red interior, now I don't have to buy a Rover 200 BRM or worse, an Alfa Romeo...

Cheers people :)

PDIBK: My excuse for 'opening up the Octy' is to clear the DPF :smirk:

Our Sept 10 TSI 85 Elegance was great with no running problems at all, that is until the dealer asked us to have the recall done (shim and update). Since then she has run like a bag of spanners. Dealer claims no fault and indicates that Skoda suggest the car needs to bed in for up to 250 miles after the mod, however ours has now done aprox 1500 miles post mod and still not running as well as it did before :S

From our experience it's a recall to avoid and sadly they won't remove it either once it's been fitted.

Had our Monti for around 15 months. We love it & get around mid 30's to mid 40's mpg. Think the 105 ps will be better if you live in an area where there's a lot of hills,as it makes short work of them  Also likes the higher octane petrol, seems much smoother & quieter after we switched to that last year

Thankyou folks, the mpg figures aren't going down too well with SWMBO, I inflated them a bit but couldn't argue with "thought you told me I get around 56 from mine" which I did after working it out over a few months, wish I'd worked it out over winter.

I guess she's doing short trips only? Avoid DPF equipped diesels then.

Short commutes and town will see about 40mpg on the TSI, longer trips will see up to 55mpg on the motorway (on cruise at an indicated 67mph), maybe higher if you are really determined. Very good for a petrol with this sort of power available.

Only 2 issues to be aware of, some engines needed the turbo shim fitted (mine didn't) and if it sounds very rough/rattly on a cold start, an updated timing chain is fitted (mine has had this)

Other than that, the engine is an absolute belter!

Best MPG run (276mile trip on m-way):
