Hard leather seat causing right buttock pain

Recommended Posts

Hi All

First post in a great forum

I'm aware of the other seat related posts but these all seem to relate to back pain & I'm not really suffering any back pain.

I've had an Elegance with leather seats for about three months now & within a few minutes of seating in the seat I'm suffering a numbing pain in my right buttock!

I'm finding the seats base very hard and narrow & I'm not that large (34" waist/80kg) .

I've tried all sorts of seat adjustments (as recommended in the other posts) & tried sitting different ways but all to no avail.

I really think there is something wrong with my seat as I can't believe no one else is reporting this problem.

Is is just me & leather seats? Would the SE seats be by better?

I've not been back to the dealer yet as I can imagine they'll say the seat is fine. I will go back at some point - if only to sit in another car & compare seats.

I did test drive the same spec car for about 15 mins and didn't notice a problem at the time.

It's really a great shame as the car is fantasic in all other aspects.

Anyone got any suggestions or experienced the same problem?

Thanks for listerning

Yeah, I have the same concern. I've had mine for just three weeks now but `suffer` in the same way. I'm just hoping that this part of the seat (right hand side base) will soften in time...or my bum `harden`to it!

I have to agree the seats in the Superb are not the most comfortable, after 17 months of ownership I'm constantly readjusting and reevaluating my seating position. It will be comfortable for a couple of weeks then I struggle with it again.

I have no problems even on 500 mile run, though I do have perforated leather. When I have had problems in the past in other cars I have found that the position of the seat squab being slightly higher has sometimes been the cause and when lowered this has helped a great deal.

Like BOBW, I too have the SE with part leather/alcantara seats and I have no problem. In fact I find them more comfortable than my previous Octy seats and much better than the A4 seats.

Hi mate,

I am not saying you have a problem with the seats (and I am not a doctor) but if you are having a pain in the butt then this could actually be a lower back problem. I say this as I have had some major problems with my back of late and the specialist I saw showed me a diagram of all the nerves that travel through the butt and down the legs. Maybe a visit to a physiotherapist for some special exercises focusing on the lower back will help...it is helping me! Having said that the leather seats in the Superb are a little hard and do take some time to find the right position for some people (based upon the responses in this forum).

Hi

You have my sympathy, I had the almost an identical problem albeit it was more in my right thigh and hip. I have had a lower back problem caused by a small pelvic tilt.

However, I know you said you've tried every conceivable seat position but I did too until I raised the seat so my hips were more on a level with my knees, as opposed to being lower.

It's a very personal thing and so many variables but if you haven't tried this then give it a go.

All the best.

Right, not directly related but today the seats were driving me nuts.

Some days I have no problems then other days I get pain in my lower back, never had so many problems with seating in a car before

I tried adjusting to alleviate the pain but no luck grrrrrrr, I drive my wife's Kia sportage and they are mega comfy, am I only the only one that finds the seats to hard in the superb?

I was suffering alot today. Total of 8 hours on the road and I was getting very sore. It seems the lower seat cushion has bolsters which make the seat too narrow. I have to say, the seat in the standard base model Octavia is actually better, which I find off for a car that costs half as much?

Spent 20 mins this morning playing with the seat positioning, think I may have cracked it for myself. I'm used to always driving cars with the seat at the lowest position, I decided to increase the height and change the steering wheel. So far so good but I guess time will tell.

I'm just glad this car has got memory seats :smirk:

Now on my third Superb Elegance, it took a lot of getting the best position on the first one, but the second and third adjusting was easy. I find that driving from Cornwall to Scotland or North Yorkshire in one go gives me no problems.

I do admit though that the seats in the MkII are much firmer than the MkI but they do soften up with use, I am certainly no light weight but the seats fit me very well ( or should I say I fit into them o.k.).

Glad to know I'm not alone in the 'find a comfy seat position' game!

I too have the seat at the lowest height & the base tilted forward to the max (I'm 6'2") - I'll keep trying different settings and perhaps I'll hit jackpot.

I've never has so much trouble finding a good position - the seat has just too many adjustments. I also agree that the seat is just too narrow & hard. I'm just hoping it will soften up with age.

Just an update on this, since I changed the seating height it feels like a completely different car to sit in, no back pain and it's very comfortable.

I've always had sporty cars with low seating position, I stuck with that and just played with all the back, lumbar, and distance of the seat. Spending 30 mins to get this right has made a huge difference.

Looks like I'm lucky enough as to my antropometric data and Superb seats geometry altogether - had 1000 miles ride in winter during 22 hours (only short stops for refuelling and natural cause, +15-minute "sleep" to eliminate urge to sleep) - no pain or any inconvenience encountered.

Hi,

I picked up my new Superb Elegance from a dealership just north of Newport, Wales, yesterday and my 1st drive of it was to take it home, all the way back to the Surrey/Sussex border. Its about 170 miles and I found it to be very comfortable. My problem tends to be getting the angle of the back correct and sorting out the lumber support. Think I altered it a few times on the journey back till it felt right.

Just hoping it remains as comfortable. I remember my last car giving me neck/shoulder ache on the left hand side. It developed after about a week. Turned out to be the fact that car was the first I've had that had an armrest and using it meant I held my left shoulder higher than I normally would. Found a remedy, I lowered the armrest lol

There has been a lot of chat about this topic but the main recommendation seems to be 'find a comfortable position'. Others have said they think there is a fault in the seat. Or are there just a small selection of the community with strange shaped backsides!

I did go back to the dealer & sit in another one but I needed to drive it for a while to see if it was any better. The one option was for me to find an upholsterer & get softer cushioning put in the base. It would be at my cost so I don't want to do it if it doesn't help or even makes it worse.

Anyway, having still not found the magic comfortable position I wonder if anyone has actually had it confirmed that their seat is faulty, then had the seat fixed, then found the seat is OK?

I'm afraid that I would have to say NO to all three questions in your last paragraph. I remain convinced that the seat base is just too narrow and that is due to the adjustment buttons for the electrics. I still haven't found a comfortable position for either myself or my wife.

Like Sw1, in my previous history of sporty cars my seat was always at it's lowest and most upright position, and right back (horizontally) due to my long legs (I'm 6’3“ and about 13 st). So that was my obvious starting point in the new Superb. Cue the chronic back pain after the first drive home.

I now have the seat so high that there's an inch between the roof and the top of my head. I also found I had to recline the seat to what initially felt a completely unnatural angle. Because of the recline I had to move the seat forward so I wasn't over reaching to the wheel, more like the position you'd have in an MPV (my other car is a Touran). It took a while to get used to, now it's much more comfortable and I can handle 4-5 hours in one go. I have minor disc problems in my lower back (like most people), so sitting in any car is never too comfortable for long periods, but after the seat adjustments it feels the same as all the other cars I've driven.
