My trusted octavia pd 130 elegance (2004) has done 148 k miles , half of it with me over last 4 years.

Full history, original clutch , turbo.

Have had some bits done in the front suspension, wishbone bushes, anti roll rubbers, to keep things tightt, brakes replaced recently too.

All working ok except gearbox is starting to feel a little notchy, particullary on 1st - is this the ageing clutch or gearbox selector stargin to go ?

My heart says get a new clutch etc and hang on to it, but would be interested in hearing other members views on how they maintain their high mileage cars - ie when do so some elective maintenance rather than have the clutch pack up on my daily

60 mile cross-country commute.

The engine runs brilliantly - i hope everyone responds by telling me to hang on to it and how to go about this.

I'm going to say "hang on to it " because 148k is nothing really for one of those. You have looked after it with little probs so would be a shame to part with it for someone else to enjoy.

Mbames is someone you should look at as his has gone over 200K now and is running perfect. I also know somebody at 356K on original turbo and 2 clutches and is sweet as you like.

Stick with it is my suggestion. Also try a gearbox oil change first for your problem. Others have done this with good results

The 110 & 130 are great strong engines.

Keep it m8, you know the history nowt is seriously wrong and you'll be getting great fuel economy with no chance of dpf problems lol

Has it ever had gearbox oil changed as that can make a big differance

Many thanks to all - you've confirmed my gut feelings over what to do.

However, i'm reckoning on replacing the dmf and clutch at least.....can anyone advise on cost of kit and garage hours please to do the whole job.

I'm hanging on to her.

I did the Valeo SMF conversion in January. Cost about £600 inc. all parts, took 7-8 hours. Worth it.

my pd225 bora was 178000miles and still going strong! was orig a pd130

New engine mounts (especially dogbone) would help, and worth checking/re-aligning the gear cables too. Changing just the dogbone will put more wear onto the others with older rubber though, so best to do them all in one hit.

I changed my gearbox oil around the 100k mark, and to be fair it didn't really need doing, but I thought I might as well :-)

Engine wise, my 110 has been perfect, just the turbo causes me no end of problems. I just change the oil every 30k (LL servicing), and do pretty much only long drives in it (60 miles each way to work). She is a good workhorse. As much as I would like a new car, I know it will be years before she falls apart and I can justify the purchase!

Have you tried resetting the gear linkage?

I sold my PD130 at around 131k but I only sold it as I needed another car for towing (My pd130 was lowered and to me it sat just right and I knew I wouldn't be happy with it sat higher)

I had a Sach's organic clutch fitted around 90k and kept the OEM DMF and to my knowledge was still going strong after the car was sold on later with 150k + on it

Gearbox oil is a must, I had mine changed at 90k when I had the clutch/wishbone bushes changed and it felt like new afterwards

Had it not have been for the Caravan situation I would probably still have it now and it would be close to 200k (I still wish I had it to see that magic number)
