Columbus and SDHC

Featured Replies

So I've got my shiny, new to me, 2009 170 DSG diesel Elegance, with more gadgets than the space shuttle, first of all my iPhone doesn't work with it, but I've solved that with the simple DIY fit bluetooth upgrade.

Then I notice I can insert a memory card in the slot on the Columbus unit so I can play my music, but if there was ever a time to RTFM, then that was it, I went and ordered a 32Gb SDHC card (cheap enough) only then to read the manual and the bit that says anything other than an SD card will not work, including SDHC cards, doh!

Has anyone managed to get an SDHC card to work with the Columbus unit?

if the columbus has the latest firmware installed it does support SDHC cards, otherwise you'll be limited to 2GB SD cards only.

From the manual:

Requirements of the memory card

› Memory cards measuring 32 mm x 24 mm x 2.1 mm or 1.4 mm can be inserted

into the memory card case.

› SD (Secure Digital Memory Cards) and MMC (Multimedia Cards) memory cards

with a capacity up to 4 GB.

› SDHC (Secure Digital High-Capacity Memory Cards) memory cards with a capacity

up to 32 GB.

RTFM ?

All other physically suitable memory cards such as SDHC memory cards (“Secure Digital High-Capacity Memory Cards”) can not be read.

Note the last few words of the last sentence! Next stop is to check the firmware and map version and update if necessary.

RTFM ?

Read the [swearing] manual

a 2009 car out of the factory will not support the card, it needs to have a firmware upgrade. The manual has been revised to reflect the new firmware, so an early manual will state 2GB whilst a new one will state 32GB.

Ahhh...thank you.

The car was in the dealers today for an oil change, I had asked them if they could upgrade the firmware and maps if possible. They said they looked at the unit and the Columbus was on the latest firmware and v7 maps, and the next version of the maps had not been released yet, so there was no upgrading to do, they also said that the firmware was part of the mapping DVD and was a one hit upgrade.

Now I'm confused, my SDHC card is not recognised, suggesting an older version of the firmware, although there could be a problem with the card or card formatting. Everything I have read with ref to upgrading firmware suggests that it's a two step process, firmware disc upgrade followed by map install, not an all in one DVD!

I have no way of checking what version it's on, the setup button press doesn't provide the status option. I have found v8 of the mapping software available as a download, so not sure why the dealer doesn't have it.

Plus...I'm confused by all the firmware versions and what my hardware version could be, my car is a Superb II registered April 09.

Anyone running v8 maps? If you have the map disc, does this do your firmware as well in one hit?

Have you checked your SDHC card in a computer, that's the obvious first check so forgive me if you've already done this!

Yes, I'm running V8 maps and NO you can't update both maps and firmware from a joint process from one disk! Who trained the dealer? Firmware is an entirely different setup procedure than a map update and for any dealer not to know this is a worry.

BTW, I've tried a perfectly good SDHC 64MB card in my Columbus (which reads 32MB cards fine), but without success.

Agree you do mean a perfectly good SDHC 64Gig card in your Columbus and it reads 32Gig cards fine, don't you.. as 32Meg won't be many songs...lol

So as suspected, the service manager was blagging (or had been blagged by his technician)! And I'm still non the wiser, thanks Skoda!

Just upgrade the firmware yourself, and you'll be able to use your SDHC card without any problems. It's not a major procedure, just have a good read of the different forum posts related to it. I upgraded my 2008 58 plate Columbus to the 2766 firmware and ran it without any problems for the last 2 years. Last week I upgraded first to 3810 and then 4020 to take advantage of the new POI import option. Highly recommend the 4020 firmware - quiccker startup as much as anything. You will lose your maps and music, so make sure you have a map DVD to reinstall.

If you want to ask any questions, just send me a PM and I'll do my best to answer.

Well thanks to this thread and some good help from Declan, I incrementally upgraded the firmware from whatever it was to 4020 (via 3810) and have installed the v8 maps. All is working well including 32Gb SDHC and the secret menu.

Job well done by the forum

Hi,

I Have the same Superb as you only registered in march 2009. I have also had similar lack of success with the dealer. I asked about a firmware upgrade for the Columbus Sat Nav as I wanted the 7 digit postcodes instead of the 5. No prob's was his reply I'll install V7.2 maps that will solve it, WRONG. :wall:

this has all happened in the last seven days. Like you I don't know what version I have as I can't get into secret menu. Do you know if the upgade you did solves this problem and if so where do I get it from, can I go from what is installed now to 4020 or will I have to go through earlier upgrade. As you can tell I really know what I'm talking about !!!!!!! I think. can you help please? Great Car.

32Gb SDHC support only comes with HW04 or above and, I think, with 27xx or higher firmware.

Check the firmware and hardware using the menus on the Columbus - especially the hidden / secret / test menu - but I think you should be OK with a 2009 car if the Columbus was factory fitted.

Majik29,

Sounds like you have a firmware that pre-dates 2664, which I think is the first that supported 7 digit searching. v7.2 maps would have worked if you had firmware later 2664 or later (see http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/232084-rns510-firmware-query/ for some more info on chronological ordering of firmware).

I had a very early firmware and upgraded to 3814 and then 4024 (which is the skoda equivalent of the 4020), and although this reformatted the hard disk, which meant the maps got wiped, it all went smoothly, and the additional functionality is great. Luckily I had a map disk so just reinstalled this. You will need v7.2 or v8 maps to have the full functionality including points of interest on these newer firmwares, although if you have v7 or v7.1, they will work without POI support, but still give you 7 digit postcode searching.

Ok Adam

Thanks for that

Hi Majik, if you want to PM me, I'll pass on details similar to those that Declan sent me which might help you out.

I've just upgraded my firmware to 4024 and my unit still won't take a 16gb card. It takes an 8gb, which it wouldn't before the firmware update, but has anyone got any ideas as to why not a 16gb?
