Insurance time - Any tips ?

Featured Replies

Got a little shock after phoning my insurance company, my renewal price had actually gone down! Despite this I asked what can they do to make me sign up today and straight away they knocked £50 off bringing it down to £1086.00 (high for some I know but I’m still young and only have 1 years no claims).

I have been doing quotes online and the cheapest I can find is around £1400.00, but the fact that my current one can offer such a price I were wondering, are there any companies I could try to get an equally competitive quote, or at least give me some ammo to knock a few quid off my current one?

I have got to the 8th of September so have a bit of time on my hands.

Are there any smaller companies out there or better search engines using different lesser known companies?

Thank you for any help

1086 with one years no claims is pretty good these days, mines 1300 with 4 years no claims but all mods declared, saying that tho it wasn't much cheaper to insure as a standard car.

im with hic, really good company, good to deal with on the phone,if ur planning on modifying, even better. give em a call, might get it down a bit more.

Have a butchers on moneysavingexpert.com; it tells you a few comparison sites to go through, plus a few additional companies that are not featured on comparison sites. You end up being able to covre a high percentage of the market by doing this. It saved my other half a fair few quid.

Personally, I've been with Adrian Flux for years. When it comes to renewal time, I'll try Sky for comparison too. I've found Flux and Sky are both excellent with customer service and are usually within £50 of each other with quotes (and that is on two pretty heavily modified Fabs).

Finally, if you know someone who is a good driver on paper ie. older, no points, no claims etc, having them as a named driver can bring the premium down quite a lot. I'm a named driver on my lady's policy and it saves her a couple of hundred each year.

Happy hunting.

Insurance companies just pluck renewal prices out of the air, im impressed yours is cheaper as they normally try 10% more year on year. Try the insurance topic area on this forum, I can recommend Adrian Flux and Chris Knott. Worth a call. Mention youre on this forum.

Thanks fellas

Hic have given me an online quote a smidge over £1200. Quite competitive considering, might give them a bell to see if they can match or beat my current one next week.

Check your job description, the above site has a checker that suggests alternative job descriptions. An important thing to note is if you put house duties, instead of unemployed (both the same thing IMO), your insurance comes down quite noticeably.

Add a partner or parents (who have a driving license) as named drivers to your policy, and see if this brings down the cost.

Don't over-estimate your mileage.

Third party fire and theft can be cheaper than third party only.

mines £ 980 from aviva with all mods declared

defiantly worth a call, have always been really good for me.

I used to use a company called Brentacre, when I had my Fabia.

I took out a modified policy, which, obviously, means you can modify the car. The way it was explained to me is there is a power limit which defines the cost of the policy. You can do whatever you want to the car, as long as you don't increase the power, acceleration or top speed of it, and the price wont go up.

I was only 21 at the time, but had 3 years no claims, and the above policy cost me £410 :)

Most other places wouldn't touch the car as it was modified, and if they would, it was horrificly expensive

I'm currently with Sky insurance, if you mention your a Brisky member it helps. There customer service is really excellent too.

Im with Elephant. To insure my type r its £1200, im 21, 0 no claims, and 1 claim against me (my fault) . didnt seem that bad to be honest

try putting a parent on the policy as a second driver this helped me out with my renewal this year dropped it a couple hundred quid on my type r

I've just left Adrian Flux. Remember they are actually a broker though, so basically a comparison company but over the phone. I was with Highway through them (Part of LV), and then Aviva. I've just added my missus on to the policy, as she's got previous claims, and they were nowhere near what I'd been quoted elsewhere. This is on an unmodified car though. They were good as gold before, but since leaving they've been a nightmare. Originally stayed with them, until I saw errors on the paperwork that they'd input, so when I phoned to query it, they realised their mistake, couldn't offer anything near the price, so agreed to cancel with no fee due to their error. They have just charged me a fee for cancelling, as well as the months payment for insurance that I don't have, have failed to email me my no claims that my new insurer are demanding, even after four calls and two emails, and I'm now threatening them with legal action, as the money they took out was supposed to be paying fees to my Estate Agent who are letting my house out. Not a happy bunny here!

Brokers/insurers independent of the underwriters charging fees when things go wrong, seems to be a common, dare I say 'scam' that's on the increase. The charge of fees should be outlawed as some seem to be doing their best to make sure the underwriters refuse cover so they can charge the fee, and they make more money that way.

Have you considered letting out your property yourself? The thing that takes the most effort is arranging repairs (shouldn't happen often), and doing inspections. Try the forums at landlordzone. Letting agents are just out to make as much money as possible, and that involves the least amount of effort and care for your property. Being a tenant in a property managed by a letting agent, if I ever get to own a house and wanted to let it, I'd never use such a company. They seem to like to make any excuse for additional inspections - I suspect they charge the landlord quite a lot for each inspection, and all they do is come around, look for a couple of minutes, ask about the fire alarm, then leave. They let some nightmare neighbours move in to one of the flats who did lots of damage, and then took ages to do anything. Their only action was to tell the guarantor (apparently his mother) that she'd be liable for the cost of damage, then she kicked him out and took the keys - then they broke back in to the property. Great!

Don't forget the immobiliser =Thatcham 2 .Most just assume /make a wild guess on line. As said, get some aged relative on as a named driver. I'm named on daughter's policy and saves her a good bit every year.

The alarm and immobiliser on a Fabia MK1 vRS is a Thatcham cat 1 if I am not mistaken?!

anewman, unfortunately the tenants are moving in today, and all paperwork has been signed already. The estate agents don't charge any fees for inspections though, only a set fee of £250, and a 10% commission each month (let for £695 so they take £69.50). No new fees for re-advertising if the tenants move on, and no further arrangement fees which we thought was pretty good. We are however a bit miffed at their lack of professionalism, as the guy turns up in everyday clothes, and uses texts rather than phone calls or emails to update me. I've put this down to the fact they mostly deal with student lets, although our tenents are not students this time. (We live close to the Uni and Hospital). I'm gonna see if they will take the fee out of the first months rent, as this has not been passed to me yet, and they have paid the first six months in advance in cash!!! (Hopefully not drug a dealer either!!! Its a working women and her three children.)

Sorry to clog the thread guys!

I know the MPI has a Thatcham Cat2 Immob, and it automatically goes into the drop down menu when you input the cars details on most comparison sites.

A vote for Adrian flux on their own Modified Policy here. Everything declared, £450 FC :)

Thats 28 Married and living in a BT postcode with the wife named on the policy which are usually a little higher than the UK mainland. :)

I'm not sure I understand why people bother with fully comp. Especially with relatively low value cars, and by that I mean a few years old and worth under £4k - as opposed to brand new or something particularly rare. One advantage is you can reduce the cost by smacking a nice excess on the policy. Sure it reduces the cost, but if your car is a total loss, you get virtually nothing.

Also, in many of the circumstances someone could claim with a FC policy, such as someone smashing into their car in a car park, and not leaving contact details etc - you have to weigh up the cost of sorting it vs. claiming and loss of no claims/added cost to insurance for the next few years - even if it doesn't affect no claims, as you have to declare the claim.

FC sounds good, but that's about it. Nearly all insurers offer windscreen cover/hire car cover at nominal cost when you take out a TPTF policy. Many TPFT policies even give you the drive other cars TPO with owner's permission cover (it needs to explicitly state this on the certificate though).

Hmm well its insurance time for me too, best quote for a normal policy £446, beating my Asda renewal of £474.

Found a modified policy on money supermarket for £502, (car not currently modified) Not sure which to go for, or wait till tuesday and ring Brentacre/Adrian Flux/Sky. Insurance runs out Tuesday 17:30

Advice anyone ? :) Thinking £54 isn't a lot to start on the path to modifying, but could it be cheaper ?

Who want to help me bradford postcode!!! Worst place in the uk.. I'm 21 with 2years no claims no crashes no convictions I pay da daaada daaada

£2,400 for the year (my friend has a vw corrado vr6 1 yrs no claims 3points and a crash he's playing £870 fully comp go figure :/)

My renewal price with Admiral has gown down every year as I build up no claims. Nobody has yet been able to beat it even when I switched to monthly payments this year (which added some £120 to the overall price), but I'm guessing that will stop as my no claims gets to a stage where it doesn't benefit me anymore...

...there's no harm being loyal if a company rewards you for it, but once they start taking the proverbial I'll be off like a shot!

Wow that seems steep - is it modified?

I'm 23, 0 no claims (have been named driver on other cars until now) and paid £930 fully comp with Admiral (could have got another 70-80 off by going with Bell, but then you have to have a tracker installed and didn't fancy Big Brother watching!). I was surprised how much the location made a difference though, would have been a couple of hundred quid cheaper to have it insured at home (Cotswolds) as opposed to where I am (Derby). Are you a student? Just wondering if me now being in full time employment helps...

But to the original question, adding my dad and his partner as named drivers reduced the premium noticeably. Saying that I have access to another car helped slightly (and it costs next to nothing to add me to the family runabout), and I would have gone with a higher than usual excess, but as I'm under 25 there is already a £150 compulsory on there.
