  • I always thought the 120K miles (iirc) was a bit optimistic to say the least. I'd planned to have it changed at 60K as was the case on my Laguna.

Yeah I was under the impression it should be changed at the same time based on advice in this thread - interestingly I wasn't charged any extra for it so the price they'd quoted me originally obviously included it :)

Just had cambelt replaced at 79,500 and got clarification that as my car did not have an atd engine and was made after 05.2001 and is on varible servicing then change was at 80K all other diesals req change at 60k 1.8ltr petrol at 120k!!!!

cost £376 inc vat and tensioner

(but only about £75 of that was parts again inc vat)

and that was from skoda customer services.

HAd a 2 litre GLS Cavalier in the mid-80's. When it had done 18K miles I stopped at a roundabout, engine stalled and won't restart. No problem with fuel or spark, but cambelt had broken. No damage as design prevented contact between valves and pistons. A Renault 25 in the garage at the same time had suffered same fault, but had caused major damage,

Anyone know what the change interval is for the new 2.0TDi 140? that I have recently ordered.

And is that why all Skoda Warranties are now 2 Years Unlimited Mileage or 3 Years 60K whichever comes first in the third year.

I was just wondering the same thing for the same reason. Also is it belt on chain ?

The warranty changed from 3 years unlimited mileage to 2 years/unlimited - 3 years/60K in April 2002. The 1.8T engine has a (rubber) cambelt change interval of 120K - way beyond the warranty period mileage for most owners.

I reckon 60k miles is plenty, especially when driven hard ;)

Used to have an Alfa 146ti - Cost of changing Cambelt, varigator and a couple of other bits was £342.16 plus VAT UNLESS you went to an ALFA dealer, and then add on lots and lots of noughts.

regarding costs of cambelt change - heres some info I just received;

My Octy VRS 2001 comes up with "Service me" message (annual servicing) at 36900 miles. car is 2001 mk1

I ring the dealer I bought off - Caffyns, and I get this message:

The car could really do with a 40k service - that'l be £474.84 please.

And information we have suggests you should do a cam change (and bits - but no mention of a water pump), based on the car's age rather than mileage.

So add that and we get £624.84 ex vat - Ta very muuuuch.

Front tyres sir, sipantly - looking a bit thin (Like my wallet!) best add say £220 and then the bits we will almost cirtainly reckon you will definately need extra,

and yes - Ker Ching, thats at least a grand with VAT.

A friend has got a VW, main dealers are recommending cambelt and tensioner change every 4 years if mileage interval not reached... age is a factor as well as mileage.

Got to be better than a £2k reapir bill...

I cannot endorse this advice enough. It also reiterates the almost weekly warnings from "Honest John" in the Saturday telegraph wrt any of the vehicles fitted with this engine. Following this advice I have just had the job done on my 2001 Octavia 4x4 at 61K. While I was at it I got the water pump replaced (also advised) as this is also notoriously prone to failure on the transverse mounted derivative in the Skoda. Well worth it as there was some obvious damage to the old pump when removed, and for the sake of another £25.

We run a fleet of about 100 Police VRS's & the highest mileage is approx 165k

we change the cambelt at 120k and have never had a belt go! and thats with driving to the extreme!

and I can honestly say the ones removed at 120k have been in a very good condition. the only time we would change earlier would be if say the water pump failed.

I think its 60k or 4 years for all TDi engines.. (was reduced from 80k)

And the best thing - "I was sitting at the traffice lights when it happened" - from customer.

"Liar,Liar pant's so on fire the rest of the world is burning....." - my thought when he said it..

indeed this is EXACTLY the time to expect the belt to go - the forces on the belt are much sharper when the engine is running slowly, as the camtrain turns against the varying forces of the valvesprings at slow speed, the belt sees sharp peaks of tension and relaxation. With the engne spinning faster the forces are smoothed out and the belt sees a much more even effective tension

My local Skoda dealer has a letter on the service desk detailing the fact that all TDi belts should be changed after 4 years even if the 60k mileage has not been reached.

They say they were advised of this by VAG head office.

In the light of the consequences if you get it wrong who can argue !!!

Lots of good advice here but can someone give me a definative answer?

My L&K 1.9TDi estate (165 bhp) is 2.5 yrs old and has nearly 48000 miles on the clock. What is the correct milage to have a cam belt change?? Some say 40k, some say 60k? others say different. It's under warrenty and the paperwork says 60k so if VAG/Skoda have changed the interval since and have not informed the customer of a product recall/change is it coverd by the warrenty/ cost free.

Please help.

I've got a 1.4MPI 2002 51plate Fabia. I am getting conflicting info from garages, one says this engine is a derivative of the Felicia and has a camchain, not cambelt, which should be changed at 60,000 miles. Another garage says all Fabias are cambelt.

Can anyone clarify please?

I'v just been told that Skoda have changed the timing of the replacement to every 4yrs irrespective of milage.

My Octi is 4yrs old in Dec 06......with only 24,500 mile on the clock!!!!

We had a TT in at our place. Recommended 80,000 change interval snapped at 74,000 - NEW ENGINE!!!! As simple as that. And £7000 later the customer drove their old TT with a brand new engine out of the garage.....

The cam belt was changed, tensioners and water pump changed all fluids changed and front brake pads changed this came to what I thought was very expensive £800, what do others think? The garage did say they couldn't belive how expensive the cam belt & tensioner kit cost, they did seem surprised them selves how much the bill mounted up and stated they would give me a free MOT when it is due, but was I cond ?

£800 for a cambelt change plus water pump, with a service and front brake pads seems not too unreasonable.

The dealer rate for a cambelt is over £500 and the cheapest I have found down here for the belt, tensioners and water pump is just shy of £300 using genuine parts.

Thanks for that, makes me feel a bit better and I must admit the garage did seem ok.
