Drinking oil on long journey

Featured Replies

I sometimes have the same issue - my car hardly uses a drop between services apart from when I do a significant long run (500 miles in a day) when it can use half a litre. I take it is to do with cruising at a steady 70mph on part throttle and it is getting sucked through the breathers and getting consumed. At some point I intend to look in to it, but I am suspecting a dodgy PCV (if diesels have them) valve or similar.

It doesn't cause me an issue as oil is checked weekly anyway.

Done about 1000 miles last weekend and my TFSI used half a litre of oil and still returned 440 miles to a tank of fuel.

440miles? What kind of driving is that from? I achieve better with stop start urban driving, managed to get about 600 from a proper drive and most likely can push that abit more if i didt smog cloud everyone :D

Gone in for service and MOT now so in the meantime i have a knackered Roomster to drive :/

:x You can get 600 miles from a tank full in a 2.0 ltr PD170 vRS?

Thats pretty good IMO

Dont forget Grizzle said he can get 440 miles from a 2.0 ltr TFSI - Petrol. Which I also think is very good. I know I cant get that out of mine (more like 250-300 more on a run). Imagine that, stop start on a full tank you will only get 250 miles :giggle:

Driving like Miss Daisy I can squeeze 600 miles out of a tank on my PD vRS.

This is 65mph on the motorway though, changing up at 2,000rpm and taking the fuel gauge well into the red.

What?! Over the whole trip (ill try and work out the exact mileage) but its was near enough or might even be over the 2000 mile mark i only used 3 to 3.5 tank fulls and the roads around Nurburg are pretty awesome :p

On a bad week (working) ill get 450 to a tank.

Car is getting MOT now, just waiting for dealership to ring to say it has failed on everything :(

Good job, beat the system and buy a new car every 3 years and you will not have to worry about MOT ever again :D.

All motorway lol, sitting at 70mph with cruise control on think the GPS said it was 67mph boot full of luggage, two laptops ipad and other bits, and me and the mrs and we arent no slim jim's lol.

While this may be a bit off topic, with there being plenty of other discussions on oil consumption I thought there's no point starting a new thread. So ...

Is it just me or is the Octavia dipstick difficult to read? Maybe it's just with it being black plastic on the end and previous cars have always had polished metal inserts, but I find it difficult to judge the oil mark on the end. Any advice (other than an eye test)?

I had the low oil warning come on last year. I was on holiday, The car had been big serviced immediately prior to departure. I use a local indy who always does a good job and is very fair. Midlands to Auvergne. Auvergne to Port Vendres and somewhere near Nimes/Beziers and would have turned off for the MIlliau viaduct but there was a bouchon due to an accident.

Stopped and had a look see, nothing apparent, on to next services had a more through examination after a cuppa. Level was at 1/4 mark. So rather than pay £20 for a liter, i took it gently to our destination in the Luberon and rechecked there. Topped up (Huile ELF from supermarket) about 1/2 liter and all fine on the warnings front. Kept calm and carried on. Now have a soupcon spare JIC.

On return, bearded "our man" in his den and he said PD oil is very thin, so may have burned a bit, lost a bit, dribbled a bit. Not done it since, which included the usual blast from Frankfurt to Dunkerque, 414 miles in just under 6hrs. Computer said 44mpg, yeah right.

I think it may have been a bit low after refill + any of the other possibilities.

I normally achieve 550 miles to a tank which equates to around 52 mpg.

This is bang on the combined figure for the PD170 so if you are getting substantially more miles to a tank then your mpg must be way higher than the manufacturers claimed figures?

I am normally around the 550 mark, although I have had 650!

TBH as I work it out 550 miles to a tank if you ran it bone dry 55 litres of diesel used that would equate to 45.45mpg not 52. How much are you able to refill after 550 miles?

55L / 4.54(litres to a gallon) = 12.1 / 550 = 45.45mpg. I have run the car to the point that I have been able to get over 55 litres in :whew: but its not a normal thing to do and is fraught with possible problems if someone was to do that all the time.

I got 615 miles on last trip home with car leaded down and using CC at progressive speeds worked out at 52mpg as I got 54 litres in when I stopped. That involved 3 cold starts. Was very happy indeed.

hahahahah Ema 450 miles to a tank is 37mpg sod that I would go petrol and thats saying a lot for me bad week or not I would be in tears....... come to think of it I get less than that myself normally driving about here doing stupid little runs :D:wall:

For me 550 is normally around 50 litres - I make that about 50 to the gallon.

I did get 643 off of 52.23 litres, and 660 off of 53.66.

I find that 55 litres is a very empty to a very full tank - the most I have ever got in is 55.09

Nice to see some good results there obviously no boy racer in you  I hope your insurance premiums reflect your good deeds.

the 643 miles one is 56mph and 660 mile one is 56mpg aswell rounded up in both from 55.9 and a pile of numbers, 550 is bang on 50 indeed thats what I aim to get on longer trips I have acheived a genuine 64mpg on a 90 mile drive involving only 30 miles of motorway but MY GOSH that was hard work was a lot easier in the Fabia but Octavia its harder Fabia record was 71.9 pre remap.

I don't often run it bone dry, I tend to fill up either just beofre or just after the red / fuel light comes on.

I manually calculate my MPG using an online calculator that uses miles covered, the cost to refuel and the cost per litre.

Fuely is great for that and you can have a little banner thing with your MPG lots of members on here have it, there is an app for it too so you can sit in filling station and use mobile (naughty) to update it.

I didn't tell you about the tanks that averaged 42mpg

The map helps with the economy, especially on long motorway cruises - 500 miles in a day.

Thats why I binned fuelly off my profile the poorer mpg for little runs crippled it down to 46mpg ish mark :( was too depressing for me I no longer bother to work out those tanks. She only takes Shell V Power when available and has had 4-6 tanks of Esso aside from that. The light came on the other day so it needs a trip to Shell tomorrow  the price of fuel is a joke these days GURRRRRRRRRR car only just hit 10K so might even have more mpg to give in time.

I agree with this! I know there is a MAX and MIN marks but its just not as simple as that. All the cars iv have before where just a flat strip of metal with two markings on, for some reason the Octavia's i find hard to get a conclusive answer, often wondered if another vag dipstick would fit!

Fuel; Have any of you driving on German roads? They are so smooth! and the hills are very gradual, diesel likes this! It was noticeable straight away, in Germany computer average of 53mpg, as soon as it hits UK roads with the rough surface and mini mountain ranges it shoots down to 43mpg.

Fubar, i worked out my weekly working fuel tank to 41 mpg i can get anywhere from 450-550 depends on which people i see per day and where they live.

I think its more to do with being able to maintain a steady speed & not always adjusting the speed due to heavier traffic as we have to do in the UK.

I think it has to be the oil type and rating (ex. 5w40)

Dipstick is very difficult to use indeed. Oil can get dragged up the tube which sometimes makes readings nonsensical as the oil goes diagonally across the calibrations.

Country roads in Germany are generally superb, at least in the old"west" bit. I have noticed the Autobahn getting a bit worse for wear, and they are having the sort of problems we had a few yaers ago. Lots of towns are dreadful, I could cope with the cobbles, but where they just put tarmac over the top and the resulting mess is now having to be completely renewed is as anyone could have told them, expensive and highly inconvenient.

When I lived there at the height of the economic miracle, money was no object, in fact the more was spent on infrastructure projects the better because it was part of the nose thumbing at the stalinists.

Now not only has that incentive gone, there are huge demands still to repair the tattered infrastructure in the east, but the money supply is tight and there are also a lot more demands on it, both internally and the recent well publicised difficulties within the EU.

An additional problem which vexes the municipalities was the change in tax law. Previously local tax was paid to the place where you worked, but now it goes to where you live. So many more commuters, who live in cozy low tax villages, and are demanding even lower charges to subsidise their having to travel to work. They are hated in the cities because they contribute nothing, clog the car parks and streets. Use all the civic facilities like theatres, opera, cinemas, restaurants and leave only mess and pollution and have the nerve to complain that they pay to much and parking should be improved.
