what diesel - which is best?

Featured Replies

Just wondering which diesel people are using, when i had a petrol yeti i used shell v power and it was worth it!

Was never fussy about where I bought fuel, until I bought my first Octy vRS TDi. It did not like supermarket fuel, but ran sweet as a nut on Shell. I now use Shell 99% of the time. Normally much of a muchness pricewise anyway. Sometimes use the dear stuff if I have a long tow in prospect.

Here we go again.... :whew:

has this been covered before on diesel? i searched and couldn't find it

Which shell fuel do you use, the basic or the expensive, is there a difference in diesels?

many thanks for yoyr replies

I always use the expensive stuff, wether petrol or diesel.

But then I tend to push my cars quite hard...

and i thought you were going to don a flat cap and pootle round in your city go-go at 30mph

if you bring to maidstone meet i will have to go and see it

I use BP Ultimate as the nectar rewards are quite good.

I also use any other high grade diesel as I find the car regens a lot more with cheap super market diesel

Tesco 99 RON or any 98 RON (Ultimate / Super unleaded). Find if I run the car on 95 RON, it feels very rough unless warmed.

All this fancy fuel, I remember when cars ran on Ribena or something the same colour and it was about £12 for a full tank! This was of course a very long time ago.

If you go and look in the Fabia II forum you will see a V power multi page discussion much as what has been started here. Also with some differing views to what is actually best.

I've used Shell V_Power plus Millers EcoBoost ( used to be DieselPlus) for 5 years plus in my various cars.

PS this has also been widely discussed in the Octavia forum as well.

Whatever Texaco or BP have in their normal diesel pumps!

hmm

from the manufacturer website

"Product Description 10K Boost Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner is an organo-metallic diesel fuel additive that ensures complete & rapid regeneration of the diesel particulate filter. 10K Boost DPF Cleaner lowers the ignition temperature of soot collected in the diesel particulate filter and optimizes periodic combustion of accumulated soot, a process known as filter regeneration. Diesel particulate filter cleaner also reduces particulate emissions and extends lifetime of particulate filter. "

sounds a bit like snake oil to me, i would be concerned it is altering the chemical composition of the soot and what effect that has on the catalyst in the DPFalso how do you prove if it works or if it is just a placebo effect, you put it in so look for the improvement?

also as the dpf regens every 150-300 miles i believe why only use this stuff every 3000 miles (every 10-20 regens)just does not add up to me

....the dpf regens every 150-300 miles...

Could it really be that often? :wonder:

Could it really be that often? :wonder:

i was reading in one of the car mags, can't remember which one, but if you think about it , 3-6 gallons of diesel how much soot will that chuck out? and how much soot do you think a dpf can hold before it get 50-60% clogged which is round about the kick off point for a regen

if you do a lot of longer runs the distance between regens may increase as the temp of the dpf is high enough to burn off the soot without need additional fuel to increase the exhause temp (a passive regen)

no doubt one of the other like techie1 will provide additonal info or correct me if wrong, but that is my understanding of it

the dpf light comes on at around 75% blocked and flashes about 85-90%blocked (think those figures are somewhere in the manual)

engine management works out when to regen but the DPF pressure sensor and exhaust temp sensor

Well my DPF light has never come on, and I think I get a regeneration about every 3 months, so about every 4500 miles.

Funnily enough it did it on Saturday.

And agree, snake oil!

My Fabia used to do a DPF regen about every 1000-1200 miles. After 12,000 miles in the Yeti I've never noticed it, so it can't be that often.

I've never had the DPF light come on in any car I've owned.

The audi CR diesel I've driven a bit regens probably every 100km on the highway. While driving the only way to know is the fuel consumption increases for a few minutes, then settles back down. During this time the engine retards the injection and drops boost pressure to raise the EGT.

That must be around every gallon or so of fuel. Sounds odd.

Unless you're watching for it, with the instantaneous fuel consumption on, you'd never know. There's no change in sound or vibration. I'd bet most peoples cars are doing it, they just don't notice.

I've only ever used Texaco diesel, it's all there is near us. Never had any problems in any diesel car I've owned. My Yeti is two years old and I've never had a regen light on, or seen any signs of a regen.

Mainly Shell V-Power. The car pulls higher gears up hills compared to ordinary stuff.

The only reason I know mine has done a regen is because the fans stay on for about 5 minutes when I stop. Funny how it always seems to happen on the drive home from work (??)
