  • There's the Swing and Audience also. Not sure whether bolero/amundsen are the right way round, but I think in very basic terms of features it kind of goes; Swing - Basic Stream - Basic with possibl

  • PDC = Parking Distance Control aka Parking sensors

  • Yes you can get Columbus with DAB, even more money though. Playing a DVD? Quite possibly the most entertaining way to kill yourself in a car. If it's for the back passengers to watch, it's cheaper to

You should be able to use any large capacity SD card so just look for whatever is the cheapest. Hopefully you'll also have the latest firmware on it as well.

32GB is the highesst capacity though?

It's from a 2012 car so fingers crossed, if not I will try and find a manual and work out how to upgrade the firmware

There are larger cards than 32gb but that size would let you do a month long EU trip and still would have tracks that you'd not listened to!

A 2012 Bolero should already have the firmware that allows quick access to the music.

I read with interest about the "premium sound" package fitted to some Skoda's. I have a 2007 vRS fitted with a Stream headunit and I've found the sound quality quite disappointing. It's okay for general use but if you turn it up you quickly reach its limitations. I've read that upgrading to a Bolero will "unlock" a lot of potential within the system but I wondered what parts were fitted to make the system "premium" and whether they can be retrofitted... or if there are any ICE upgrades that people would recommend?

The Stream and Stream MP3 are pretty awful, to be honest. My Bolero sounded much better and the 310 better than that :)

Mines in the post, hopefully I can fit it before going back to work. Hope the gateway isn't too much of a fiddle to get working :)

The differences between the Amundsen and Amundsen + are:

+ has Bluetooth built in ( but not necessarily activated)

+ has internal memory to store maps (Amundsen has to either have the map disk in or have the data copied to SD card - you can still use the SD for Music)

Both have Sat Nav with full post codes, SD card slot (SDHC ) 3.5mm Aux socket on front of Headunit.

I've had a Bolero before (as a HU in Touran) and it's just a good for day to day use unless you use CDs a lot. The Sat Nav isn't the best in the world but can get you from A to B.

+ Has Dab does the Standard one have this.

I knew there was something else. To answer your question the Amundsen (not +) does not have DAB.

Not strictly true. If you had a jumbo box fitted with the Audience, THAT's what the Aux-in is connected to; the 3.5mm mini-jack socket under the armrest. It's only a socket though and therefore not gonna do anything functionally as an ipod connection would; it's purely a signal. The bolero has the same and that's what connected automatically as soon as I fitted one into mine. I stick podcasts on my nokia and use a jack-to-jack cable to the aux in in the jumbo to listen to them.

I don't think it is quite that simple either...My May 2006 Elegance has the jumbo box as standard and the factory fitted option of Audience and Premium Sound System. There is no AUX socket in the jumbo box, and the Audience does not have the necessary connections (although the menus DO feature AUX IN options!).

Later '06 cars do have the AUX connector in the jumbo box and the Audience fitted to them does (obviously) have the necessary connectors - as far as I am aware the later version is labelled 'Audience MP3' on the front panel whilst the non Aux version like mine just has 'Audience' on the front - although it will play MP3's on CD!

I have no complaints about the sound quality of the Audience/Sound System combination - in fact it is very good. But the lack of any form of connectivity for a portable audio player has been an annoyance since I got the car - thinking it is now probably time I did something about it. However as I understand it a further complication with my car would be that the gateway would need changing to prevent a Bolero or Columbus flattening the battery...

Are you reasonably sure about the Aux-in capabilities of the "Audience MP3" ?? I also have a early 2006 Audience wthout Aux-in and have been searching for a solution. The SuperSkoda website are selling "Audience MP3" head units for...........wait for it...............99euro!!

Yup, just checked: my 2008 headunit definitely has 'Audience MP3' written on it.

That looks like that might be the difference then as to whether you can hook it up to the external aux in or not.

Just been on the SuperSkoda website and they have close ups of the back of the unit (I requested them) and all of the pins seem to be in place for the Aux-in. 25 euro shipping to Ireland plus 99euro for the unit. Result.

Thanks for all the input on this subject Blackspaven.

Ooh, great find. Link to manual on Superskoda site also confirms AUX-In function. Ordered!

...now to source the bits to retrofit the AUX-In socket in the Jumbo box....

I'm not going to go that far.I'm just going to run a good quality lead (monster) into the ashtray and take it out when I need it. Let us know how you get on.

Eddie on here sells coded gateways and delivery was quick and easy, would recommend him to anyone needing one

If you want to retrofit an AUX socket, do so on the rearmost ledge in the jumbo box. Putting it here only needs the rear panel of the jumbo box to be removed, rather than the whole console.

Pull the air vents out, and remove the ashtray/bin, then remove 4 screws and finally pull the complete back panel off. There is now loads of access for the rear section of the box.

Thanks for the tip Mike, do you have any info on the part numbers for the socket/cable needed to connect to the socket on the back of the HU?

Will look into it -- running this on win7 at the moment, but need an XP machine to access! You'll need one plug for the quadlock on the back of the head unit, 1 couple of repair wires and the socket itself, along with enough thin cable to reach from the socket to the headunit.

Got visitors arrived, so bear with me -- will get it sorted for you!

Mike

Thanks for your help as always...no urgency, I can think of better things to do on New Years Eve!

Ooh, from having had an Audience (currently in the loft), I find the Bolero a much, much better unit. I don't know if the SS ones are brand new, but a second hand Bolero is only abotu £150-180 delivered. :S

If you where to trawl the Breakers Yards and came across a Columbus what would you expect to pay.

OK, plug not needed, the 3 aux input wires (left, right and earth) are part of the CD changer plug (pins 1,2 and 7) Forget the colour coding on this picture, its 1,2 and 7 on the right hand most plug.

The part number for the aux socket, complete with cover, is 5J0 035 475 9B9.

Better things to do on New Years Eve? Hmm, dunno. Mum-in-law is here with us.............

Mike

Many thanks for your help Mike, I'll get the socket ordered.

Ben, I thought you'd be out playing with your car tonight rather than be on Brisky!!!

Mike

Lol, had to wait for the kids to be in bed. Thanks for your help and happy new year

I have Amundsen+ that does not have DAB.

I was told that it is an optional extra.

I never asked at the time, but does this mean fitting an Amundsen+ with DAB or changing something on the one already fitted?

Does this mean I wouldn't need to get someone with VCDS to code up the new head unit for Maxidot / Steering Wheel Controls? Thanks .
