Stereo guide - Stream, Bolero, Columbus, Amundson etc

Featured Replies

If you where to trawl the Breakers Yards and came across a Columbus what would you expect to pay.

Not gonna happen. Scrappers will know this is top of the line and have already taken it out unless it's already busted.

  • There's the Swing and Audience also. Not sure whether bolero/amundsen are the right way round, but I think in very basic terms of features it kind of goes; Swing - Basic Stream - Basic with possibl

  • PDC = Parking Distance Control aka Parking sensors

  • Yes you can get Columbus with DAB, even more money though. Playing a DVD? Quite possibly the most entertaining way to kill yourself in a car. If it's for the back passengers to watch, it's cheaper to

Where would you check the revision code please as my mate would like to change his?

Does anyone know if the stream mp3 displays PDC on it?

can we maybe sticky this, a few people have asked about head units recently and this is a fairly good thread

Mines the nexus system, would love to have the updated maps but almost £200 from the dealer, anyone know of alternative solutions?

Does anyone know if the stream mp3 displays PDC on it?

Yes, mine did before I got the Bolero

Hi guys, second post, please be gentle...

I bought a 2008 reg (Irish) Octavia Scout. She was registered in January so is probably a pre-2008 model. Anyway, only had her for a day or two and loving the experience already.

My car has the Stream MP3 fitted with radio only controls on the steering wheel. As I will be using the car for my work I really need BT Handsfree and ideally SatNav. Is there a head unit you guys recommend that has both? I realize I will have to install a microphone for the BT etc.

I had a look on SuperSkoda at the Amundsen 869.99 Euro (eek) but it states that it is only compatible with the Octavia facelift model from 2008 and I am not sure how that compares with my Scout.

Any help on which unit to go for, even aftermarket is much appreciated.

Have you considered an aftermarket GPS unit? Yes, they are ugly. That's the only downside. You can de-uglify it a bit by buying a proper Brodit dashboard mount instead of using the suction cup.

869,99 will buy you two or three high-end Garmins or Tomtoms with built-in bluetooth handsfree, and I'm willing to bet that a new one of those will be a lot more modern than an Amundsen unit which was designed in the mid 00's for a 2008 car.

I have. I currently use a Garmin SatNav with suction cup and aParrot-Mini for Smart Phone which also has a suction cup. To many charging leads and suction cups going on. The Garmin has handsfree option but sound quality was rediculous. I'd rather buy something that fits in the dash and replaces the Stream head unit. I'm also looking at the Dension option but I'm not sure yet what is compatible and what isn't...

Cheers for this mannyo, anyone bought from these and (specifically) used on the nexus system? I would be interested in your thoughts

Yes, I am using the latest disc in my nexus no problems.

The nexus is basic but usable. Not having full postcode entry is a pain. If I can't find where I'm going with partial postcode entry I use Google maps on my phone.

Hi Biglad01,

If budget is a factor depending on if you have maxidot on your car you could look at the kufatec Fiscon low that would intergrate with the Stream and give you hands free. You wouldn't I don't think see anything on the head unit but you could drive it from the maxidot. This is £219 on their website. It wouldn't give you sat nav.

In my octy I had a stream and replaced it with the Bolero and got the next version up of the fiscon unit. The Bolero is a much better head unit than the Stream. I had to do it this way as I didn't have maxidot. If you want sat nav as well then you would be better off going with the Columbus. However, you are then getting back into the Amundsen price bracket (Although getting a much better setup).

If you do go the Fiscon route you will probably need some recoding done.

Hi Freedom,

I do have maxidot :) Just had a look at the Fiscon and it would do the job for the bluetooth at a reasonable price! I'll investigate a little further and look at a Bolero or Columbus options too. The problem is that we are fairly isolated uphere especially when it comes to the availability of dealers or others that can recode or remap etc. The nearest SKODA dealer is just over an hour away...

Thanks for the feedback, I'm learning every day!!

One of the Ebay sellers mentions "special" software for the Columbus units with reference to cars 2007 or older to prevent battery drain. Is this a real issue? If I was to fit a Columbus to my 2007 Scout I suppose I would have to get the BT activated/upgrade and a a mic as well?

I want a Columbus, what am I likely to pay for it supplied & fitted into my 58 octavia elegance?

G

From a dealer, a hell of a lot!!!

  • 1 month later...

The Stream initially came without mp3 and then as the Stream MP3 at about a 57 plate.

The Stream MP3 is older than that as my 56 plate VRS came with one.

Is the Amundsen compatible with pre-FL cars or not? I've been reading through the forum topics but not found much definite about this aside from some people saying it isn't and a few comments implying it is.

Also it would be handy to have the trim shapes added to the post on the first page or are they all the same bar the Columbus?

You'd need a hard definition of "compatible" really.

I have a RCD310 from a VW. Almost everything works ok. I can't code the auto-changer in the boot (no big deal as I use MDI), no parking display or climate display, no again no biggie really as the climate display is about 3 inches lower than the stereo and I can hear the beeps for parking. However, it plays CDs, radio, DAB, MDI, the fade and balance work, the display dims when I put the lights on, sound comes out of all 4 speakers and it switched on and off as normal.

I think the only thing you need to be careful of is the CANBus controller being (I think) revision K or later to avoid battery drain.

I all my Briskoda traveling, I've not seen anything (other than the CANBus/battery drain issue) that implies that there is a total incompatibility between a MKII Octavia and any of the VAG head units, just sometimes certain features won't be available.

I guess my definition of compatible would be is it any worse than the Bolero? It sounds like from what you've said it isn't and possibly slightly better if the backlight works properly? The Amundsen+ is appealing as from comments I've read here the SD card and sat nav work better plus it looks the same shape as the Stream mp3 so I wouldn't need the different trim (this is proving awkward as I have a VrS without climate control). However my gateway is right bang in the middle as it's a K revision which I don't believe guarantees I won't have the battery drain issue as there's some people on here have had battery drain on that revision.

Reading the manual in my MY12 VRS estate:

"In order to connect the telephone to the hands-free system it is neccesary to connect the phone to the hands free system. Details in your phone operating instructions" followed by instructions for either HFP or rSAP.

Checking the bolero user manual I get "Connect your mobile phone with the mobile phone programme according to the instruction manual for your specific vehicle"

From reading a few posts, I take it that I need some additional hardware to connect my phone to the Bolero unit, not that instruction manuals are any help in this respect.

IIRC the blacklight issue is only with Bolero (no-one seems to have any idea why though)

Amundsen is, however, the same shape as Columbus and would need a replacement trim....

IIRC Stream, Stream MP3 and Bolero (and maybe Dance?) use one fascia (the hole is wider at the top than at the bottom, all the rest use the other one. (More "upright")

Fascia for a pre-FL is about £6 from your local dealer. Somewhere on here is a list of pre-FL fascia part numbers. Although the original fascia will fit, but there's a gap around the headunit.

Whilst not exact, this picture shows the difference in shape between the two types of head unit. The "indent" is roughly the shape of Stream etc.

Unfortunately it's not so easy for my car because it's a VRS without climate control, I can get black trim easily enough but silver less so as most VRS cars had the climate control. There's a bit of a debate on here whether the part actually exists or not, I've mailed Skodateile who seem to think it does exist so will confirm with them. If the Amundsen was the same shape as the Stream mp3 then that would have made it more straightforward.

Thanks for the information on the trim shapes, I've never quite worked out where exactly the difference is.

You could always get the black trim and spray/plasticoat it ;)

Ooh, great find. Link to manual on Superskoda site also confirms AUX-In function. Ordered!

...now to source the bits to retrofit the AUX-In socket in the Jumbo box....

Changed my mind on this and decided to get a Columbus instead, so if anyone is looking for a brand new Audience MP3 (with Aux-in functionality!), unused and still in the box, please pm me with an offer...

For a small part I'd probably give that a go as I doubt I'd be able to make it look that good so with a bigger part that's fairly central to the car probably not. So back to Bolero and trying to figure out if I need a new gateway, I thought it was the last digit from the CAN gateway part of VCDS but that seems to be an 'H' which seems very early for my car which I think is an MY2007 (has stream mp3 and red brake calipers):
