Problem Solving

Featured Replies

I have an s-reg 1.9D Felicia with about 120,000 on the clock, I've recently serviced the car; changing the fuel filter, oil filter, oil, thermostat and air filter. I've also recently had a brake line changed that involved taking the fuel tank out. So...

I recently broke down and called out the old breakdown service. I'd been running low on fuel but it'd gone far lower in the past, but solving the problem involved the guy putting some diesel in and giving what he told me was the fuel pump relay a couple taps it started up and ran fine.

I've looked into solving the problem, but when I contacted a Skoda dealer they informed me that by the part no. I was looking at the glow plug relay. After looking online and in the Haynes guide I can't find much info on 1.9D fuel pumps. Just wondering if the fuel is summoned by some other method.

One thing I have noticed; not sure if i'm just being paranoid now is that when the car is low on fuel (into the red) it starts to behave a bit weirdly, the main thing being accelerating under a balanced throttle.

I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this or had any idea of what the problem is/could have been

PS the relay I was told controlled the fuel pump is located in the centre of the three relays found in the top right of the engine bay, mark 104

Thanks

Will

AFAIK the fuel feed is purely mechanical, sucked up by the diesel pump. Certainly when working on my Mum's one there was no sign of any electrical pump, the fuel needed sucking up from the tank and into the new fuel filter via a hand pump temporarily attached.

If the car plays up when the fuel is low.... don't let it get low!

I'm pretty sure this is a purely mechanical system.

Things you can try that are cheaper than an exchange pump:-

1) A new fuel filter.

2) If you can DIY it, clean the fuel tank.

3) Fill up just before you get to 1/4 full!
