anyone know of a fix for µTorrent so that my downloads aren't throttled?

I think it's your ISP doing the throttling rather than a utorrent thing.

O2 have slowed mine to about 5kbps, time to find a new provider..

Do you use SSL?

What port are you using?

SSL? Port? I'm not too clued up on those things, Sam! On checking it says Port 44270, there's an option to randomise port on startup. Can't see anything about SSL, whatever that is?

Check the up and down drop-down boxes at the bottom aren't set to a capped rate.

Months back someone posted the answer on their status, I did what they suggested and it worked. I've since uninstalled and then reinstalled µTorrent but I forgot what the fix was! D'oh!

Both are set to 0, ie unlimited.

I tend to hold back the upload but this is still 25kb/sec. My downloads have been flying lately, regularly seeing 2mb/sec

Open up µTorrent, go to Options, then Preferences.

Go to Connection. Set the port to 443

Then go to BitTorrent. Protocol Encryption. Set to Enabled.

I'll hve a play with mine later on the and see what i can sort out.

I just gave up using it and actally watched some of the stuff i'd already downloaded instead :D

2Mb/s Pff!!! I often see my connection maxed out (my line gets 6.5Mbs).

Some ISPs have horrible throttling or "Profile" settings, even on Vispa, who claim to have no throttling, now admit to "shaping", and it is no longer restricted to off peak hours either.

So you have a 60mb+ connection then? People have said Virgin traffic shape but apart from blocking a certain site that pirates frequent it's be great.

there's ways around things if you like pirates ;)

Pffft 6 you say, I'll raise you another 6, I'm on 100, but see more like 120.

As for shaping etc, it's never been applied to my connection, don't ask me why, day or night full whack !!

@ljp01 Torrents are carp anyway, use a news server if you want max out

Ah, yes you mentioned those a few months back in another query I had. Looked into it but they all seem paid for, and I'm a tightwad! ;)

Cheers, Sam, I'll give it a whirl :) IIRC the person who put the fix up on their status was Chris Coates; I'll PM him if he doesn't see this topic.

Just a sample, running a little slow

They are paid for although your ISP may do a free one, but the retention of files will be days rather then years, £6.50 a month I pay

contracts up for renewal soon, I'll shop about and might consider one after. Cheers David :)

I know virgin did newsgroups, dunno if they still do tbh.

currently with BT, not sure if they have any? Might tell 'em I'm leaving and see what the customer retention team can do for me ;)

I could have a 100Mb/s connection for exactly the same money I am paying now, I just cannot justify the install charge of £100, so I am waiting for it to drop (significantly); sadly, the FTTC packages have exactly the same data download limits of my current package, so all I will be doing is getting the stuff faster, rather than more of it.

Not anymore, and access to a lot of sites such as newzbin and the piratebay are blocked by court order.

However with sky its very easy to work around the piratebay block, unlike virgin who employ more complex methods.

Oh! and before anyone starts mentioning BT Infinity, a friend has it and recently ran into a problem. A friend of one of his lodgers started coming round at weekends and borrowing his 30Mb/s (I tested it), connection to download torrents, after only two weekends BT restricted his speeds to 2Mb/s and sent him a bill for excess usage. No explanation of how much had been used was included, nor any information of what was considered OK.

Not sure about newzbin, but the Pirate Bay blocks are only (forced upon) carried out by ISPs with more than 100,000 customers, so that is BT Retail, Virgin, Talk Talk and Sky; everyone else should still get access.
