Bulb failure warning light

Featured Replies

My bulb failure warning light is coming on occassionally - usually, but not always on start up.

It goes off in time - usually after switching lights on or off or braking which of course puts the brake lights on.

No failed bulbs when I check though (apart from one of the interior boot bulbs - I know should get a new bulb).

Im assuming the system does not monitor non essential interior lights - If it did then warning should come on all the time.

Is this a common fault?

Any ideas what's going on?

Thanks

You've not fitted any non-standard lights have you? HID kit, LED sidelights, LEDs somewhere else in the external lighting system - anything like that?

If not, it could be a wiring glitch somewhere, or a bulb is not quite seated correctly. I would go round and check all bulbs for fitment, and also run a diagnostic scan with VCDS if you can, or if a local member can run one for you. If there's an error it should be logged.

And you're correct in what you say about interior lights - these would not trigger the bulb warning.

One of my number plate bulbs has gone - sometimes I get the bulb warning, sometimes not. It hasn't been on for ages (still not replaced the bulb) but came on today.

When I get round to it ill change it, but in honesty I'm surprised it goes off temporarily.

Do you have maxidot?

I had this and it was solved by replacing the bulbs that were supposedly failing. Im not sure if the bulbs were on way out, ie filament resistances changed sufficiently to activate the dash lights, or if they were not connecting properly and actually not working on occasions. However the bulbs are cheap and relatively easily replaced so I didn't mind changing and no dash lights anymore for me thankfully.

2009 1.9Tdi Elegance Hatchback - no maxidot.

Check for a spare wheel well full of screenwash and a leaking rear washer pipe in the near side rear quarter panel in the boot.

Those cap less bulbs in the tail light can come Louise from the holder enough to make the warming light to luminate but also keep thre bulb lit

2009 Elegance with no maxidot ?

That's strange. I thought all those upwards had this?

You are not alone.

I have this same intermiitent issue and it only appears if the headlights are switched on.

At the last service the local dealer said he couldn't find anything wrong, and he suggested just reseating all bulbs.

Strangely, I have just had a new engine fitted under warranty, so lots of disturbance of electrics etc., and it has only been used since then with the headlights on.

No bulb warnings yet (??), so maybe this is a poor connection issue?

Had much the same prob myself, as I said in my earlier post new bulbs sorted it, not entirely sure why as the older ones definitely weren't blown.

It might just be the headlight levelling motors... the bulb warning light also comes on if there is an issue there as well and I know I have this with my Octy having had a VCDS scan. However, I also have a 50w HID kit and cold diagnostics off and Xenons without Shutters enabled so I have a sneaky feeling the controller is looking for a self-levelling connection etc. which the car doesn't have...
