Gatso speed camera

Featured Replies

Got flashed by one today but I was way past the grid. Am I still screwed? Will have to just wait two weeks I suppose...

In a word yes

I was flashed by one a couple of weeks back but heard nothing. It could have been set as ANPR, checking on tax(sorry, road fund licence)/MOT/insurance status of passing cars. Not sure why they'd flash if just checking vehicle status though  Anyway, I heard nothing, so wait n see. I think there's some 14 days clause in there?

Yes apparently if you haven't heard in 14 days then you have got away with it. Annoyed as I pass this particular camera every day after work. Was not concentrating. I was definitely a good 10ft out of the grid though.

They don't use them for anpr.

Could be a faulty camera if you were well past. If just past, and over the limit it'll be a long wait.

As has been said, if you haven't heard anything within a fortnight from the rozzers then you'll be in the clear. If you were beyond the markings, I don't believe they can do you as there is no way for them to verify the speed the radar reported (radar is subject to error caused by scatter, hence the need for the markings and two photos, so the speed can be double checked). That's not to say they won't try it on, so make sure you get to see BOTH photos if you hear anything from the fuzz.

It could also be out of film. If it's a digital Gatso you might not be so lucky on that front, but I don't believe digital ones are all that common. Might not even have had a camera in it, they rotate them between housings! But if you want to make absolutely sure you don't get anything through the post, I suggest you make busy with some petrol... :bandit:

EDIT: Boring fact of the day, you can spot a digital gatso easily, as they have a secondary flash gun mounted on a separate pole.

I was always under the impression that they did need the markings to work out distance travelled during the two pictures. Oh well. Will keep you posted if I hear anything.

No markings and you can challenge it as they cannot proved the distance you travelled between the two photos. Therefore no case against you.

But they normally don't provide the evidence at the first point so you have to appeal it to see their evidence!

You were travelling the same direction as the camera was facing weren't you? It is possible to trigger a Gatso when you're coming towards it but it isn't calibrated to record your speed that way. The opposite to a Truvelo. A lot of cameras are turned on in rotation as they cost a lot to run & has been said. They don't always have film in.

Good luck!

First response within 14 days, if it comes, will be a notice of intended prosecution to identify the driver of the vehicle at the time of the allegation, which you must return within 28 days

If you accept being the driver, depending on the speed alleged, you'll either get a conditional offer fixed penalty, which you can either accept, do a peed awareness course (if offered), or request a court hearing

There is no requirement on the police to provide photographic evidence at the NIP stage, as it is the registered keeper's duty to provide the details of the driver

I was told by the Safety Camera Partnership that 1 flash means there is no camera inside and obviously 2 flashes there is. If your outside the markings there is nothing they can do as measurements can't be made. Also driving head onto a camera and it flashes won't get you done as you have to be driving away from it. That's how those types are set up.

So you have seen the speed camera flash – now what? Provided the car is registered at your home address you will hear something within 14 days. The police have just 14 days to write to you with a notice of intended prosecution. If they don’t – they are out of time and there is nothing they can do. But be aware that if the car is not registered at your address, if you have changed address or it’s a lease car all the police need do is send it to the address on the log book. If you don’t get it for a few weeks later it still counts as valid service.

Found the above. Repeats what others have said but adds that they will send it to the cars registered address, so if it's not registered at your home address, you need to check the other address.

Hi. The car is registered at my home address. I was driving away from the camera. Once past the markings I usually accelerate a little but have never set it off. I will wait and see if I hear anything in the next two weeks.

I'd move

I wouldn't worry about it too much buddy. There is one near me on the A264 into Tunbridge Wells that flashes randomly every now and again, like it's on the blink. I've even seen it flash when I've been walking down the road and there are no cars!

It also flashes at cars going the other way if they're going a bit too fast, that's happened to me a couple of times and I have been well within the 30 limit on my side of the road, obviously nothing came through the post. Was there anything going the other way in your case?

Yep, quite right, they don't. It was late, I was tired and didn't read the OP's topic title properly. My bad.

If there are marking and the first image is before, the second after them, then you were going too fast.

If you were well clear of the Gatso, and it went off, then it could be an old unit and a car coming the other way could have set it off.

Basically, wait 14 days.

I once got overtaken by some idiot in a discovery. He chose to do it past a gatso on the over side of the road so it flashed him. This was at night and the surprise flashing in his face nearly caused him to crash, which was quite amusing.

This... I used to set off a camera on the other side of the road on many

a morning on a 40 stretch leading into Tottenham Hale. Must have made it flash 50

times or more over the 5 years or so I worked there and drove in that way.

Never heard anything. I did once get a parking ticket in Tottenham Hale picked up

and issued from a CCTV camera near the BP garage.

It's also possible to set off the camera where the M11 ends where

the speed drops from 70 to 50 and it splits into the North Circular A406 East and West.

If you join the M11 heading north from the North Circular and really strum it in

the outside lane it occasionally picks you up on the London bound side.

I know the one you mean on the M11. I haven't managed to set that off from the other side yet. You must have to really neck it to do that!

Always get a photo.

When I had my corsa I got done by a gatso, turned out my plates had been cloned.

Good luck.

It's amazing when you're dealing with these cases day in day out how many people say "it wasn't me, my car must have been cloned"

One guy tried it once with a red Ducati - pushed it the way to trial, then got shown a photo of him riding in tandem with the exact same person he was with when he accepted a fixed penalty a few months before

Nearly got himself done for perverting the course of justice too..........not a good idea

I was fast asleep that morning so wasn't me driving. The pic I got was a Vauxhall zafira with my plates.

I wasn't insinuating that it doesn't happen, but that some people will try it on thinking it's an easy get out
