Watchdog tyre repair kit

Featured Replies

Fortunately, when I bought my car, it came with a spare wheel........had the car 3 weeks and got a puncture which was too severe for gunk to be used.

you can change a wheel in 10 minutes, the Rac cant do it in that

But part of the argument is that a whole lot of drivers simply can't change a tyre.

Perhaps this should be incorporated into the driving test? AFAIK, examiners ask you a few basic questions about vehicle maintenance, so why not put some practical part in also? Shouldn't knowing how to drive also encompass knowing what to do when you break down, be it from a puncture or some other type of breakdown.

Funny that. I've spent 40+ years messing about with Bikes and cars, even had my own (partnership) garage a few years ago. Even after all that practice I STILL can't change a tyre at the roadside.

A wheel - probably, a tyre - no chance. :giggle:

I've always had a spare available - checking my current Superb when buying it the spare was missing, so insisted that the dealer provide one - a steelie with new tyre was compromised on.

However I would guess that in excess of 75% of my contacts would not have a clue where to startto change a wheel, and with the carp jacks and braces supplied with most cars wouldn't be able to shift the studs anyway.

I used the spare a couple of times in 9 years on my Octy, so worth having. that meant I wanted a spare for the Yeti, even if it did compromise an already smaller boot. Glad I did as it's on the car now, having got a puncture in my winter tyre less than 24 hours & 40 miles of it going on brand new. Fortunately my local tyre fitter is right next to work, so should have the spare tucked back up in the boot in the next hour or so.

Even if I had a spare I wouldn't want to change a tyre on any motorway. Especially at night. Greenline didn't come with a spare and the BMW's got runflats with no spare.

Having not got my car yet I was just wondering if there is room in the boot for a spare wheel in the octy vrs? Anyone got one?

I wonder how many wheels are being purchased since this was aired. I know my grandparents were not aware of this and checked the car to find no spare wheel.

They are now looking to purchase an additional alloy for the car!

No spare tyre or space for one, no run flat

The motoring equivalent of no batteries included.

Fine if the condition of UK roads was perfect, there was a 24 hour tyre repairer on every street corner and people had unlimited spare time to fritter away.

Surprised no-ones devised a flat-pack, lite-carcass wheel, get-you-home wheel yet - suppose the tyre manfacturers are too busy devising new compounds for formula one.

Kris1-- yeah there's room. I got rid of the big foam insert and bought a cheap, kerbed Neptune off of here. the new foam insert with tools and jack for 35 quid from the bay. Feels so much better knowing I can sort myself out if the worst happens!

I think big Audi's have something simular as do Porsche.

In Ireland, even the base model (Active) Citigo comes with a steel spare wheel, tools, jack etc. as standard.

got my focus in 2009 , spare wheel in boot , all my cars prior to this had spare in boot , got my new Octy Greenline and could not spec a spare had to wait until car arrivied then buy spare and tools from dealer cost £125, OK i am happy to change wheel in daytime in dry, at night or in the rain I'll ring the RAC , but if i did not have a spare and tyre shredded then its tow the car miss your flight etc,

UNtil recently cars had spare wheels no one had to question it , and by stealth they have been removed , people only find out when they need one

Car Makers tell people up front give them the choice problem solved :swear:

There is a wheel well in the estate not sure about hatch though

As a former Examiner (Hence my Title) now retired, you do not have time in a driving test to get a candidate to do that. It is the same reason why we do not do motorway driving either,as not all test centres are close to a motorway.

The reason most people do not question if a car has a spare,is because years ago no car would have ever been sold without a spare,no more than a car would be sold without a steering wheel or seats.

My Smart car did not come with a spare as they said there is nowhere to store it,however i purchased one,and store it behind the passenger seat. It does reduce leg room for the passenger,so i have to make sure any passengers have little legs lol.I had tools from years ago. I would not dream of driving a car without a spare, and would certainly order the Citigo spare when i purchase the car.

Yes, The facelift vrs hatch does have a spare wheel well.

I don't think it's big enough for a full-width vrs alloy, but it does hold a standard steel wheel + tyre

(which rates as a "spacesaver" on the vrs)

Just put an 18" vrs wheel in the wheel well (estate) it fits but the carpet is lifted slightly, still better than tyre weld though.
