  • When it's below 7 for a few days is when I make the change after which it usually warms up

  • Mind you we didn't really have much in the way of warm temperatures did we? Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

  • I've run nokians for the last three years, very happy with them Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

I do not know what to do this year - didn't bother last year and don't remember any issues or hairy moments tbh!

As the colder weather approaches, I keep seeing more on here about winter tyres, I travel on main roads (A26/A21/M25) to and from work and rarely have the need to go anywhere "untreated" therefore I am not sure I can justify the cost - thoughts please...

Well as you have hinted you probably don't really need winter tyres

As my previous post indicated I am a new convert to winter tyres. (Vredestein Snowtrac 3 205 55 16) Have not yet had the snow to test them properly but am mighty impressed with their ability to cope with fairly substantial puddles. So if like me you live in an area with lots of poorly drained roads they could be worth it for that alone. The Vredesteins don't seem to get the highest ratings these days but still score well for wet weather performance.

Winter tyres are a must. I picked up my brand-new Octavia 2.0 Tdi 110bhp from a dealer in Poland last Saturday, on the Baltic coast. It was sunny. Of course, all new cars in Poland are sold with summer tyres. It was just my luck that as I headed south to where I live 350 miles away, near the Czech border, it started snowing. My God, what a disaster. I was slipping and sliding, even more so, since the tyres were new, too. I got home ok but it was very very unnerving. So I bought some Fulda winter tyres yesterday, not a moment too soon. They offer great grip. Ok, so they're not Michelin but 350 pounds is not too bad. By the way, Nokian came top in a Polish winter tyre survey this week in one of their major motor magazines. - WR D3.

OH NO!!!! its been 5-6 deg here for a few days.... does that mean my summer tyre are useless!! OH NO!!!

**sarcasm**

I have only gone for winters because I live on a very steep hill in a small village in the country and drive my kids to school. I want them to get there all year round and be safe.

Also, my expensive summer tyres get a few months off (less wear) and my alloys get a break from SWMBO. It all depends on your circumstances.

If you rarely leave main roads that are likely to be treated, you probably don't need them. Just take good care when it gets very cold or if it snows............

I think we all agree that the "gritting of roads" in the UK now seems to be a hit and miss affair

Some councils wait too long , most getting caught out if it snows

Winter rubber is essential if you have a daily commute

For around £400 its a small price to pay for peace of mind

And you are also not wearing out summer tyres whilst winter ones are on

Round our way only the main roads get gritted - pretty useless unless you actually live on a main road (we don't). A couple of years ago the main road near us wasn't gritted in time and even a big heavy bus got stuck up a slight - but icy - incline.

Both Mrs Goat and I have to be able to get to work (and therefore nursery for the kids) whatever the weather so this year I got winter wheels. And as PC1212 says, it gives the more expensive summer rubber a rest.

Yep winter tyres are a must for us too the last 2 years I've had my 4x4 confiscated ok the first year we had a BMW as her car and her theory was its it's slipping give it more power. I was relegated to my offroad toy which whilst great fun offroad is not the best on the road but gets me about.

This year our daughter has to go to nursery etc so winters on mrs can be fairly confident of grip we live just outside main roads area so the last to be gritted if ever.

I have thiose tyres on mine. "Insa turbos", although you may be a rich bugger nad have the real deal - simex. Tempted to get mine out for winter but being a landy the heater barely overwhelmes the influx of cold aie through the non existent door seals. Kinda hoping the vRS will be better than my beemer in the snow so plan on running it without winters this year. Time will tell if this was a good descision.

Intend to put mine on this weekend as there's only been 1 day this week where it's been above 7 degrees on my drive in to work.

All three family cars now on winters and each has a different brand, Hankook W310, Bridgestone LM30 and Avon ST's. Think I rate the Avon's as number 1, with the Bridgestone a noticeable last. Complete opposite to the professional reviews :giggle:

Also used Nokian WR G2 with a previous car (well recommended) but I believe that's now been replaced by the D3/A3 series :wonder:

Insa turbos well spotted I had a Landy (series II) but I was spending more time fixing it than playing so it went picked the Diahatsu up for peanuts I've only ever had to change an indicator relay in almost 3 years.

Had my Avon Ice Touring STs from last year fitted this weekend. 4 valved and balanced by local mobile fitter for £ 30 - Bargain.

My Goodyear ultra grip 8 went on my new steel wheels won on ebay for £60 on Thursday, local fitter charged £30 to put tyres on, balance and swap wheels over. Result I thought. Had 3 mornings of frost since and already had snow in Yorkshire.

Less extreme weather down here, my Nokian WRG2s will probably go on in December.

My 17" Federal Himalaya WS1 went on Monday on lovely refurbed Pegasus. Now I just have to get my summer set refurbed aswell. In a funny way I'm sort of looking forward to the cold weather.

Tell me about it. Mine has been garaged for quite a while now but that was mainly due to arrival of our wee girl. In hindsight i wish i had bought something japanese for about 1/10th of the price as my landy. Plus i got bored of those little Jimnies kicking my arse round the tighter courses on the RTV's. Need to sell mine but i know i wont get back what ive spent on it. Sad days.

interesting to see the differences in weather, we had our first frost on the 12th September, lost count since, but others on here are still at the stage of the first few frosts.

Another vote for Goodyear Ultragrip 8 tyres - Went the whole hog and bought new alloys aswell as tyres - The Ultragrips are quieter on the motorway than my rather worn (22k miles) summer Conti SC3's. Fuel economy down about 3mpg. Funky tread pattern up about 100%.
