Winter tyres when what

Featured Replies

Ohhhhhh its getting to that time all right our temp here was 26Deg C here today but meant to plummet to -3 around weekend and different sites are forecasting snow on Sunday/Monday

You wouldn't believe it, but here on the other side of the world we are getting exactly the same. 25C last week, snow down to 300m recently.

But back onto winter tyres. Anyone worn out a set? How many miles do you get?

I'm just about to order a wheel and winter rubber package, the questions is which ones?! AVON Ice tourer ST @ £102 each (with steel wheel), Vredstein snowtrac 3 @ £120, Hankook W310 or Winter ICept @ £113, Nokian WR D3 @ £117 - the list goes on!

Thoughts?

That's where my money went: for the TT, 225/50/17 @ £109 each (Oponeo.co.uk)

These are from £75 (depending on the load index needed) for a 205/55/16

The WRD3 and A3 are an excellent tyre.

I'm currently running A3 and WR-G2, with the G2's likely to be replaced as they're at 4mm.

What is your view on the A3 compared to the WR G2?

I have WR G2's for the Superb but bought WR A3's for the TT.

I got converted after driving my father in laws 5 series with winter tyres on, it handled better than my 4x4 which had standard tyres. Standard tyres compound gets harder as they get colder, while winter tyres are softer so more grip, hence they wear more. Well worth the money.

Actually summer tyres wear out quicker in winter than winter tyres as the compound gets brittle. If you run the right compound at the right time of year you will get maximum mileage out the tyres. Once above 7c winter tyres wear out faster than summer tyres. Its a no brainer really plus switching to winters extends the life of your summer tyres as they cant wear out in the garage.

I feel they have more grip than the G2 and since they're the G2 replacement it'd make sense.

That's great to hear... especially as I really rated the G2's

I should of said I HAD G2's on the Superb - I replaced them last year for some better wheels c/w Bridgestone's... these however are not as good IMO as the Nokian's.

I had the same dilemma last year. I got the Avon Ice touring STs as I got them at £ 65 each and they were great last winter. I've already contacted my mobile fitter to arrange fitting next week.

Tried the new winter wheels out they're pretty good actually put the summers back on, now after seeing the forecast for next week looks like I'll be swapping them back doh. Vredestien snowtrac3 slightly noisier than f1 eagles but aside from that very impressed.

My current winter wheels are on their winter wear markers, and as I'll do 7-8k during the winter months I have just ordered a new set for this winter.

Not sure whether to run the old ones till there done, or pass them onto a low mileage user......

The past two winters I've been using Nokian WR G2's, which have been fantastic, but got a set of Goodyear Ultragrip 8 for SWMBO's 206 last winter, which have also been great.

I paid £60 per tyre for the Nokian in 2010, but looking around £90 per corner this year for the replacement to the WR G2., so just went with the Goodyears for mine instead. Hoping I'm not disappointed !

I've just fitted hankook winter tyres today. Forecast to get a lot colder so hopefully good timing.

as a guide anything less than 4mm of tread for winter tyres won't be effective in the snow and it's time for a change

Winter wheels on (vedestein snowtrac3 205/55/16) quick blast through the country lanes they're pretty damn good inspection being carried out by Henry incase I've not done it right

Blimey you've got a big garage - nice to see two cars in there - we keep both ours in the garage too - but it is a bit tighter than that.

Still not quite cold enough ave temp down here for mine to go on - but they are ready in the garage.

Temps here are at 5deg now highest was 9 today and next weeks looks the same so got them on now see what happens.

I do not know how black rims will fit into the silver car  ;)

Only bad point with those wheels is they have a polished face which are not durable against the grit used in winter. Dont know why manufacturers sell these type of wheels in the UK as they'll offer no warranty against corrosion. Best just buying a normal painted wheel .

Dropped to -1 tonight on the drive home. Aberdeen airport closed temporarily to clear snow off the runway. Winter on the way - will fit winters/steels next weekend unless a warm (>+7) spell becons.

Well, having fitted both sets today I have just taken the TT out to see how the Nokian A3’s perform, now bearing in mind these had done just 10 miles of steady driving on the motorway, I decided to push them a little:

4° on very wet roads (not stopped hailing that long ago)

Standing start: no dramas at all, just pulls away cleanly

2nd gear powering out of a roundabout: OMFG anyone would think it was a bone dry warm day and not 7PM on a miserable cold night.

If anyone is in doubt about the Nokian A3’s, then don’t be, they certainly get my vote

(FWIW my WR G2’s which I rated highly wore just 1mm in 10K miles).

My wheels arrived from My Tyres yesterday, AVON ice tourer ST + steel rim for £106 each. The wheels came fitted, balanced and inflated. Does anyone know if they usually come with enough tyre pressure to fit to vehicle?

Also, what's the best tyre pressure for a 2006 VRS?

The pressures will be on the inside of the petrol flap, just add 0.2 Bar (for all winter tyres)

I do not know what to do this year - didn't bother last year and don't remember any issues or hairy moments tbh!

As the colder weather approaches, I keep seeing more on here about winter tyres, I travel on main roads (A26/A21/M25) to and from work and rarely have the need to go anywhere "untreated" therefore I am not sure I can justify the cost - thoughts please...
