run out of fuel before the 'miles remaining indicator' gets to 0?

Featured Replies

Do you think vrs's will often run out of petrol before the miles remaining indicator gets to 0?

how many liters is it supposed to have after the fuel lights comes on?

My mate ran his car dry last week! Why would you let it run that low to even find out? It doesn't take 5 mins to fill the car up. Mine hardly ever goes below quarter / half.

Ran mine for 30 miles on "0" - not out of choice I should add :D Damned lack of fuel stations on French autoroute!

Anyway - was fine. There's at least a gallon of reserve I think,

Is it 7 litres when the light comes on?

Not certain, but the gauge will panic you,as it goes down 10 miles for every 5 travelled. I've done approx 10mile on "0" .My light comes on at 70mile left.

Never! 'cos they runs on diesels...

<ah, my coat, thx>

Seriously:

Litres, I'd guess somewhere between 5-6. Having had issues starting other cars on hills when low on fuel, I try to not let the VRS get too low, filling up more or less immediately after the light comes on.

Doesn't the fuel light come on when the digits say 70 miles left? but this is quite varied as the miles till fill up determined by how economically you drove for the past 5-10mins (or so I thought).

So I guess if theres 7 ltrs in the tank when light comes on, how long can you last on 7 ltrs is the next question... :whew:

My remapped petrol went from 35 miles left to 10 when I was gunning it over the moors near Rishworth once, I had 25 miles to go home, did not have my credit card with me as my wive was using it for the weekly shop ,the last 20 miles on the motorway luckily a 50 speed limit anyway , I did showing zero miles .You will get loads in a Diesel

yesterday i had clocked 223.5 miles to the first quarter of a tank, then tried to fill tank full to the brim and i put 24 litres back in, i've been filling the tank then pressing the switch just inside the filler neck and getting upto a further more 5 litres in the tank, anything extra helps, lol. yes it pings at 70 miles left in tank and i have driven about 400 miles +. mileage differs every week. trying to keep tabs.

The miles left will vary depending on how economically you have driven recently. I done a motorway run, then some town driving, ended up running out with it still showing 10 miles! Never again.

I've done about 20 miles after the display is reading 0, once the light comes on the dash it's not a big deal as long as you don't go crazy there's a good 30 miles in it

It might be different in my Cordy but I get the fuel light and beep with 30 miles remaining.

Once it then gets to "0" there is several litres still left. I have driven 50+ miles with it reading zero before. This wasn't by choice and we slightly miscalculated how far we had to travel and ended up in the middle of nowhere needing fuel. Got 65mpg on A and B roads driving to the nearest petrol station on the sat nav.

When I filled it up about 44 litres went in.

My light comes on at 65-70 miles and it runs on 0 for a while regularly. Never ran out on me

Looks like the Fabia is set differently then.

In that case the miles left seems pretty much like how many miles you actually have left and it includes most of the reserve.

Mine is obviously set to a very safe 30 miles left... but it's ok... you've got another 40 at least after that! lol

Phil

Mine has never been lower that 15 miles. Panic sets in then!

Mine beaps around 30miles left too. I've done a further 30ish when it shows '0'.

According to the manual, the fuel light comes on when there's 7 litres left in the tank. Mine also comes on when the miles left is 75-80.

you do of course realise that it is not a good idea to run diesels down to 0 ?

first reason is all the crap it drags into the fuel filter from the bottom of the tank & and also the airlocks you can get in the system as it struggles to get fuel instead of air

i know modern diesels are not as prone to crap in the tank as older vehicles but the risk is still there IMO

im not sure if the petrols with fuel filter are the same?

when mine hits a quater tank i start looking at filling up

Must admit, I've taken it close a few times, last 1.5 or 2 litres of fuel, praying that it was 7 litres left as per manual and doing some quick sums on my current mpg!

My record was 45 miles past 0 and then i thought i had better fill up :)

My light normally comes on around the 55 miles mark. I've only ever let it get down to 0 miles left once and i can't remember how many miles i actually did like that before i filled up.

The light on mine always comes on at 70 miles. I've run down as far as 15 once. It's a bit tricky at times because for reasons I won't fully explain I've been buying my diesel at Sainsbury's in Shrewsbury for the past seven months and it's a challenge making it last between fills.

EDIT - I fill up there because it's cheaper than Gloucester - currently 2p/litre less...

I once briefly ran mine on '0' miles. Another time though I ran out of fuel on a roundabout with the range showing '10'. Don't trust the range computer!!!

I ran out of fuel once - in 1976 - never again!

I ran out a couple of years ago with it still displaying 45 left..... to be fair it had been saying 45 left for about 2 days! Needless to say, I no longer rely on the 'miles to go' read out! Soon as I hear the 'Bing' I fill up when I can.....!
