run out of fuel before the 'miles remaining indicator' gets to 0?

Featured Replies

Agree with - dont trust the displayed miles, as they can vary wildly depending how how you drive the car even within the same tank of fuel.

When i was a lad we only had a fuel gauge non of this electronic rubbish :giggle::nerd:

The procedure for setting the 0 mark on the fuel gauge requires 5l of fuel in the tank. So you have just over a gallon when the fuel gauge shows completely empty and the fuel computer shows 0 miles left to run. There's no magic to it.

IF the fuel guage worked - in the sticks, I'd carry a can . Trust a BL fuel guage- NEVER.

my trip computer stated 105 miles left in tank, but i put 45litres in, the fuel tank capacity is 45litres, so how was it possible to put that amount in and have the other amount left in tank, when i checked trip computer it said i had 630 miles, since then i've been brimming the fuel tank and can't get anywhere near that 630 miles amount normally 540 miles, last week clocked 92 miles and put 10 litres to brim the neck. so should get 416 miles on this tank fill.

Nominal capacity 45 litres - actual capacity higher to allow for expansion space.

Nominal capacity 45 litres - actual capacity higher to allow for expansion space.

so is it bad to completely ram the tank full by pressing the little button lots of times when filling up.

i get about 10 litres extra in after the nozzle stops for the first time.

Where is this little button? Is it only only fabias? I have ibiza 6L

Well you don't have to press it "lots of times" merely hold it open to let the air escape when filling up. It depends how much expansion space you think you have to leave, but obviously if you're filling up during a journey it'll be going down soon in any case.

It's in the fuel spout - there's a topic on here somewhere.

i put 45litres in, the fuel tank capacity is 45litres, so how was it possible

This is going to sound like a daft question - how do you use the petrol pump trigger ??

I read this in a leaflet last year at my MOT station - I'm new to Skoda's as used to drive a big Citroen C8 - in excess of £100 to fill up, and as I was doing a lot of motorway driving at some points I have filled up every 3 days, also my partners car is a 3.0 litre V6 petrol Hyundai Santa Fe - so any money saving tips are always welcome.

If your doing as most people do which is pulling the trigger to max your creating the maximum amount of pressure - there's a pressure release bit in the nozzle, if the pressure is too much it will go back into nozzle - you still pay for it, however it will end up back with the petrol station.

As an experiment I filled up as the instructions from the leaflet, which said to use the nozzle trigger half way - this will dispense the fuel at a slower rate, therefore not as much pressure and hopefully none going back up the nozzle. Ok I will admit it does take longer to fill up, so I fill up in the evenings which is quieter.

Surprisingly I found I was putting in 10% less fuel, but still getting the same amount of mileage - I would struggle to get the 82 litre's my C8 using this method - against the 90 litre's it was taking before. The Santa Fe the same - just to check if it wasn't just petrol or diesel that this worked for.

In summary to your questions regarding 45 litre's of petrol - I would say you had 4.5 litre's left in the tank - you used the petrol nozzle at maximum speed, so the 45 litre's you put it was actually 40.5 litres - 4.5 litre's returned, so in total you ended up with 45 litre's in the tank, just paid about £5 more for it.

I very much doubt that the effect you are suggesting would be anything like that significant.

The reason Stuart can get 45 litres into a 45 litre tank is that the tank is 45 litres nominal - actual capacity is greater, and if he also released the pressure relief valve during filling - even if unintentionally - then fuel was going into the expansion space.

My light always pings at 55 left. ALWAYS.

I have a similar problem. Once my light comes on its a race to the filing station as it has been know to get as little as 3-5 mile from when the light strikes. Also trip as the car down for doing 38MPG with mixed town and motorway driving.

Pretty **** tbh... All filters replaced, MAF replaced but still no change. Just used to it now haha

hi, like DRJ said i'm filling up the expansion gap within the tank,

i'm sort of experimenting with these tank fills, quantity and mpg, over the last refill i managed an average of 46mpg, is this normal for these engines, i just recently topped up my tank last week using the little switch/button in the filler neck again managed to get in 50.70litres plus i still had 60mpg left in tank, this last tank fill to the top i managed to get 520miles out of the fuel, i'm using v-power atm.

could have squeezed if i wanted to another 30mile out of the tank, but don't trust the tank figures don't want to run out of fuel. Shandy_fabia the best time to refuel is first thing in the morning as the density of fuel is lower than the afternoon/evening due to expansion and atmospheric pressure. give it a try.

I can remember the biggest fail of my motoring experience has to be fuel related. I was in my Polo (no trip computer), knowing I was getting an RX-8 in a couple of days so was trying not to fill it up. I had to take some stuff around to my nan's so took the car rather than cycle. The fuel light was on, but the needle was still moving up, so I figured that that meant I had fuel. Set off and got there fine (about 1-2miles). Left to come home and went the main road way, via a couple of schools. The car sputtered and ran out of fuel, just before 3:00 outside my old school. :(

Luckily I caught my sister and borrowed a tenner to fill it back up again. Standing there with a jerry can as several hundred teenagers walked past. . . not the 'coolest' look in the world!

Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is just because the needle moves, don't assume there's anything left in it!
