Would you swap your fabia I for a fabia II

Featured Replies

Owning a mk1 Vrs and very impressed by it now I wasn't sure on the mk II at first but it has grown on me very impressed and a lovely little motor!!! What's your views??

This should be interesting... :D

Whats the insurance difference like on the II?

Cheaper usually as it's a safer car. ESP that can't be switched off helps.

To answer the original question...no I wouldn't

I love the engine and gearbox combo, however I'm not sold on the Fabia II itself.

I like the squareness of the mk1.

Once possibly... but not twice. :)

Fabia II is growing on me. Still think the front end is badgers backside ugly but overall the car's looking better to me.

I'd stay well away from the petrol engines though. Would like more refinement but on a reliability vs refinement basis I'll take a 1.9TDI.

...Or even a Roomster 1.9TDI if they're for cheaps.

Thought usually insurance is higher due to it being worth more... plus its quicker.. :p

Cant switch ESP off?? that's crazy.

Never knew this. :o That's cack!

In answer to the question. No. And I'm car shopping

right at the moment so it's been on my radar.

I did consider one briefly but have read too many horror

stories about that engine. I could buy a nearly new one for around

the 12 grand mark but I'd rather spend 5k more on a 4 year old

better car. I also considered an Octy but they are just too big

for my needs really.

Yeah insurance is gerally cheaper.... I didn't like it at first it doesn't have the love at first sight appeal of the mk1 but it is defo a smart little car and to say it's as quic yet quicker than say a Clio 182.... Or 197 is a tempter!! Still not sold on the chunky styling tho :)

Yeah, the button on the dash allows you to light up the front wheels, but it will still stop you from sliding the car.

I know, we tested it on an airfield :)

the auto dsg crap puts me off. mate had a3 1.4 turdo. slow and he got bored of it after a year and sold it and he bought that from new!

i wish they made it 3 door instead of 5 aswell :(

I wouldn't. It's too euro looking. Too round. I like me mk1 vrs. Looks square and mean.

No, even though the Monte Carlo interests me, i'm happy with my car at the moment. :)

For me it's mkI VRS or mkII as an estate.

The problem with the mkII in my view is that it's too tall and narrow.

The estate version pulls the styling off better with a longer roofline.

It's also lighter and more practical. Win-Win. :)

I agree for me it has to be an estate next because on my massive dog! Ha. But it's ether a mk2 fl octy cr tdi estate or fabia 2 Vrs I have no need to go bigger than a fabia estate but the octy comes as a diesel and it 340miles a week driving I gotta consider fuel costs!!

go for the octy estate they are so much better looking and with the diesels power its a no brainer

I know where your coming from! Tbh it probably will be but I don't need a car that size at all just need an estate because of my dog only me n are lass and we never carry passengers haha I won't change the mk1 fabia Vrs we got for a ling time... Might even keep it instead of part exing :)

+1 on the estate, think if i were to get another skoda it'll be octy hatch vrs or fabia estate vrs.

I test drove the mk11 fabia when it first arrived and didn't like the dsg gearbox - in my opinion it lacked the control of the manual - more freedom to tinker with a mk 1 as we all know how receptive the TDi is to a remap. To answer the question no I wouldn't swap -

a straight swap! Then yes, then sell it and buy another Mk1 and modify it all again.

I didn't like the Fabia 2 when it first came out, but I am slowly getting used to the face-lifted version and vRS.

I know the new vRS has more power, but I think I'm miss the torque, and fuel economy of the diesel. I don't know how I'd get used to driving an auto box (not driven many), however I'd imagine it might be the best transition to a petrol car again, as I'd probably stall a petrol manual a lot.

If I did go ahead and buy one, it would have to be a green one with black wheels and roof.

I think it's a bit too curvy, and it looks tall too. At least the Fabia I carries it's shape well. Also I'm not sold by the safety. Saw one of them in a small bump and it didn't fare well. Jam and sponge EVERYWHERE!

I'll get my coat.

I like the mkII, but i'd rather another mkI.....I'll be keeping mine a good while yet i think.

Let's see what AdLav has to say about this as I have his old MK1 (as most of you know).

Personally, I have not driven (properly) a MKII but I am not that keen on the engine/gearbox combination - I like the auto from a point of laziness but I prefer to feel like I am driving the car and the driver involvement (for me) is better in the manual gearbox, this combined with the fact that I drive every day of the year come rain or snow and I just don't have as much control/confidence with an auto - not even the tiptronic as this still changes when it wants if you go to the extremes in the rev range. I also prefer the characteristics of the Diesel engine. Personally I feel they made a mistake with the new Fabia vRS, I feel the option of Petrol/Diesel, manual/auto should be available although I understand the market is slightly more limited with the Fabia then the Octavia. Like the fact they have done a performance estate though!

Discuss!

No...but I did it in reverse by changing a Fabia 2 for a Fabia 1. It was at the time of the scrappage scheme and my wife saw a Black 1.2 60bhp with AirCon at local dealer and, like a fool, I allowed myself into being persuaded to change a perfectly good Felicia 1.3 Hatch (still the best Skoda I have owned to date) for this heap. It seemed a good idea at the time but I wasn't keen on the shape from the outset, particularly disliking the "toothy" grill, and rapidly grew to loath the digital fuel gauge, lack of temperature gauge and cheap and nasty door handles plus being disappointed with fuel consumption and fed up with fighting a losing battle to keep it looking clean. Maybe if I had a bought a better spec 70bhp model in a different colour I might have liked it more.

So after a couple of very discontented years I sold it back to the same dealer at not too bad a loss and ,from an independant garage, bought my current 1.4 8v which I like very much better. It's not perfect and ,with hindsight,I wish I had spent a bit more on a newer and better example but I prefer the shape and classic grill , it's a much nicer car to drive and being silver it's easier to keep looking clean. The big downside is the fuel consumption... I knew from this forum and other sources that this model is pretty thirsty but didn't realise just how bad the fuel economy (or lack of) really is and this is the factor that is now making me consider changing it for something more economical...which unfortunately will probably mean some other make.

Re my above post ... I didn't realise it was in Bold Font....certainly didn't mean to shout !!

Apologies
