Remap Insurance Increase....

Featured Replies

I'm looking at getting my Fab mapped at long last within the next couple of months.

Just wondering roughly how much people are paying extra on their policies for the privilege?

I haven't phoned mine to enquire before I get it done yet, but I can't help but think it's not going to be the most pleasant of phone calls!!

I think it all depends a lot on who your insurance is with. Some insurance companies might only put it up a bit and some others will probably **** themselves and refuse to insure you.

That's what I'm worried about! I'm almost 30 with a fair bit of NCD though.... so I'm going to be keeping my fingers crossed when I do phone. I'm with Hastings at the minute. It's safe to say I'll be gutted if they won't insure me and I have to wait until my renewal in April :-/

Why don't you just go on some insurance comparison sites and see what comes up.

Probably a good shout until I get around to waiting in a call centre queue for ages!

is it manditory that you tell them?! Im inclined to believe its undetectable....

It's not undetectable if you have a good reason to look

Surely if you are keen to "try" it out, you could do something like Shark with STS and only turn it on where appropriate (e.g. trackday)

You could turn it off the rest of the time on the road, no problems, renewal time then switch it full everyones happy.

I would imagine so long as its not in tuned state when you drive and possibly run into difficulty like god forbid, that would lead them to have opportunity to check its current state of tune then you would be fine ?

That said I think you are definitely doing the right thing, I would not entertain any kind of mapping til I had an idea on the impact on my insurance.

As it stands Im unhappy at being so claim free for so long and despite this paying so much - so I'd definitely be very keen to see my insurance position before rushing to do something like this.

Every single situation is different, just phone them up, could be anything from refusing to cover to no charge.

I've been with sky for nearly 5 years now. Call them when your renewal is due and give them a go. And you get a forum discount. They are pretty good with modified motors.

Why don't you just go on some insurance comparison sites and see what comes up.

Comparison sites are primarily set up for standard UK car insurance, whilst a minority of insurers will provide cover for a modified car, you're usually better off with a specialist insurers for price, level of cover and modification knowledge.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks for that. Always helpful to get info from people in the know. :)

I'll hang fire and get a quote when mine's due for renewal in April. :)

My renewal is up on 9th November.

I've phoned a few brokers and companies, including 2 of the ones who are associated with this place.

It looks like i'll be going back to Elephant as they will cover all my mods (N.B. but not replace like for like) for £230 fully comp - the next nearest was around £280 with pretty much similar circumstances (XS, Legal, etc.).

From experience, Elephant will also cover more mods (I used to drive a highly modified Honda Prelude insured with them) and are generally pretty reasonable when it comes to £ increase per mod.

Saying that, I am 41 so get "auld git" discounts ;)

You are legally obliged to inform your insurance company about any mods, or you won't be insured. Simples!

if you can't afford the extra premium, then don't get your car remapped

However, if you buy a car which has been re-mapped & the seller did not inform you of it when asked, it would be "reasonable" to assume you answered negatively correctly, when you were asked by any prospective insurer if the "vehicle has been modified from original manufacturer's specification".

Always answer "not as far as I know" to that question. As an owner or driver, you are not an "expert" on your car's specification and therefore not responsible for any "hidden" modifications by previous owners.

My opinion - if you can't afford the associated insurance increase, then you can't afford the mods, simple as.

None of this playing dumb, we are all petrolheads here - how would you feel if your pride and joy was written off by someone who subsequently became uninsured due to a technicality with their insurance?

That couldn't happen under the circumstances I described.

Massive "flaw" in your plan - many of us like myself are single owners of their vRS :o)

Unless you are suggesting I sell my car then buy it back in order to achieve this facade.

I wouldn't mess with insurance, I know from first hand experience how even the silliest things can (at the very least) get them increasing premium to continue cover in my wifes case.

Do you really want to have to go through all the hassle of an accident and then be on the bad side of insurance.

Not me personally mate.

Although I will be interested to weight up the difference on insurance myself and doing it the "proper" route when it comes around again, my quotes ought to be something more like Stevens but has been almost double that :(

Mind you not quite cracked the 40 yet....that is next year so may be interesting to see if this impacts in a good way and then I might consider remap

HIJACK IN PROGRESS...........

Whilst we have a thread running about the effects of remaps on insurance, i have a question that i will build up in a long drawn out fashion, beat around the bush a bit, and eventually i'll make my point and hopefully someone will still be with me at the end to answer the question....

I've recently had a remap, i notified my insurers by phone about the map, they bumped my policy up by about £88 for the remainder of the term and i thought i was all done. Today though i have received a form asking that they need me to fill in detailing any mods done to the car. Now, obviously i've told them about my remap by phone, and now i've listed it on the form too, but the form also asks about any other mods to the car, part 3 asks about INTAKE & EXHAUST mods. Now, the only thing i have done is fit a pd160, i'm still running a standard filter, nothing else has changed and as far as i'm aware little to no benefit will have been gained on the mild remap that i had done....

So, question is, what do i list this mod as? do i just put pd160 air intake? is that going to mean jack to them? do i mention that the filter has remained standard? anybody any thoughts on this? what have people with a pd160 intake done in this situation....

Yes i know it's probably a daft question, but just want to make sure i declare everything in the correct way whilst also making sure i don't sting myself for wording things incorrectly....

Hope somebody can advise.....

Steve

You forgot to fully list the mods ?

Well I would put the standard intake back on and worry about the hassle of insurance when it comes to renewal and presumably, you have greater degree of options available to you.

But then I prefer an easy life.

Nice hijack by the way. You do know it doesn't actually cost anything to create your own thread :giggle:

Indeed, nothing like a good jack move though.

You forgot to fully list the mods ?

I think it must be an age thing, i've only got 2 mods and i managed to forget one of them! it's only on reading the form i thought.... oooh, yeah, i've got one of them....

Easily done I guess. I would seriously cut the hassle though given its so easy to remove and refit or (you call) just "forget" to tell them (I wouldn't)

Its been well debated here that it might make bugger all difference so is an expensive mod anyway for little perceivable difference. Supposedly to make flow better, supposely more important for remaps, but it is really. Where is the evidence.

yeah you have a good point,,,,, i'll whip it off tomorrow. might even sell it on as not planning on doing any other mods engine wise.

ok... hope you enjoyed the hijack, you may now resume the op's thread.....

sorry
