  • i know, a year ago i logged on to try and figure out a fault code, now i have a car that cant drive through a town near me cos of an aggressive speed bump

thought was going mad lol, yea they are bit more expensive than that iirc for oem ones,

I cant see how they would go tho as they are solid metal, like said tho its prob down to the 20" rims before now the 19s lol, puts extra stress on things coupled with lowering as it is, all adds up.

the thing that gets me tho is it only does it when warm and been thrown about? leading me to also think its a bush somwhere that gets soft with the heat?

still def doesnt sound like rack though eh?

Rods are not solid metal though, that big lump on the opposite end to the screw threads contains a joint which allows for suspension movement between the wheels and rack, without it the rack will be ripped to shreds very quickly. When you lower the car you apply extra stress on this joint and it can lead to failure eventually. its the joint inside the big lump that fails and can lead to all kinds of noises. The track rod end deals with the left and right turning of the rack, and the inner track rod joint deals with the up and down.

I've had trouble with racks, 3 of them, my current was leaking until poured some crap in there to seal it up.

I reckon my problems were down the bad knocking which I found out the otherday after about 4 yrs is subframe bushes(Yes Billy I found the ****** thing lol)

The one bush had literally ripped apart, and the car has regularly been chewing up front end components over the last 4 yrs, Bushes, drop links, tyres even !!

Hopefully I've cured it now !!

Don't make the mistake I did and keep changing parts, get a good diagnosis first, even if it means paying someone to undo a few bits for proper look.

Thats one thing with the front end on these cars, it ain't easy working out whats knocking on them !!

There was no up and down movement in my subframe, and its impossible to create enough force to move it whilst the car is jacked up etc so at a glance you would think it was fine. In fact everyone who looked told me it wouldn't be them.

It was my diag in the end, mind I had 4 yrs to think about it lol.

Make sure before you spend, it does get exspensive quickly otherwise

good glad youve sorted it Dave, taake it youve put ne bushes in? if not you can have my subframe to put them in then swap like for like?

As for the solid remark lol, I didnt mean rigid, I ment they seem to be solid metal, the rod has a solid metal ball on it that is in the bug nut but thats also solid metal there doesnt seem to be anything there to wear and they are well greased and sealed up.

still doesnt explain the not doing it cold tho?

found this lloyd, tis a good price

if you cant see that (can't remember if you need to be a member)

(copy of ad)

Got the above for sale which consists of

'quick' steering rack

cast wishbones (bushes are fine)

Hubs for the above

You'd potentially need to swap the hub carriers from your current hubs to these along with new bearings.

A much more suitable setup for those running remotely low setups due to wishbone/drive shaft geometry....

well if you are going whole hog, tie rod ends, rack bush (superpro imo), arb bushes and r32 arb (if you want) or just replacement stock arb bushes with stock rubber or spuerpro again, balljoints, new 2wd bearings/flanges for hubs pressed into the 4wd hubs.

as you will have the rack down, you might as well change all the bushes and components that are there when the subframe is down

i find it hard to believe that the lowest milage mk1 on the forum has a fecked rack. Deffo go for the second opinion Lloyd. Failing that, Trevs rack is uber cheap.

bushes can deteriorate with age too.

It is early for a rack to fail, however if it wasnt topped up in the past, and as lloyd runs really big heavy allys then it could have had an effect.

I agree a second opinion is def worth it..he needs all the front end checking for movement, even the subframe.

yeh the wheel thing could be a fault but personally i very much doubt it. i have run VAG cars for years slammed on big wheels and never broke no racks.

Lloyd, i know it sounds silly but your wheels are all done up tight aint they?
