New Project for the winter months (Android Tablet Install) MK2

Featured Replies

Think it looks really good, especially at night, must be like a cockpit lol what is that second lower stalk on the left hand side of the steering wheel?

looking ace Karl

I agree on the pod, couldnt you go full stealth and modify a volvo dash part ?

Ahh didn't realise it was a 7" can't really go any smaller.

How do you rate the Nexus? I'm going to buy one tomorrow but cannot decide between the Nexus & Samsung galaxy tab 2.

Cheers Binzie, fair play that does look very neat but a bit beyond me I think, plus it would most probably involve some cutting of the dash.

Can't comment on the Samsung Dan but I am really impressed with the Nexus, very smooth and fast, good screen and excellent battery life. Some people complain about lacking a rear camera but I can't see the point, only downside is the lack of expandable memory but there is now a 32 GB version for the price I paid for mine :wall:

Thanks Karl, Currys are offering £80 cash back on the Samsung or £20 cashback on the Nexus too now but it runs out tomorrow, which is why I'm off to get one tomorrow. Suppose the only thing I can do is go there an see which I prefer. Anyhow I don't want to spam your thread anymore....looking forward to see how your tablet install unfolds :)

Pod MK2

After a lot of thinking, I decided that there is not much that I could do with the basic design apart from taring it apart completely. Then I realised that the angle of the display did not match the existing dash and that it needed to be tilted back further. This would allow me to lower the top of the pod slightly hence changing the shape of the pod.To stop it looking like a bloody radar ball mounted on the dash !!

The result

Looking a bit better

From inside

Old vs New

Made the hood smaller (not sticking out so far) and added some thickness to it to mach the existing pod. Also added some chrome trim to break up the all black look and to better match the main dash pod. Still not 100% and a little bit rushed but I think it looks better.

As you can see - slimed it down quite a bit

As again comments and criticisms welcome

Cheers for looking

Thought I already was :giggle: .

It might not be the fastest VRS on here but aiming for the most customised

I agree Matt, I just used some chrome trim which I tried on an old project and did not like it them, but I thought I'd put it on to break up the large expanse of black.

Would really like to try to chrome just around the 'window' to the tablet screen to keep it in line with the rest of the dials. Will have to look into it.

Looks much better now! :) wish i could put up with no vent and i would make one too! :)

Did want to try and keep the vent as I said in the first post, there is a possibility cutting two areas either side of the screen and covering them with mesh and using them for vents.

Having said that very rarely use the vents except on extremely hot days when I put the air con on to blow cold air towards my face, which still can be done by the side vents so not much of an issue.

Cheers

Looks much better, good job :)

Nice one, I am hoping to run a similar setup in my rally car, does "torque" show the boost pressure ok?

Just a thought, from a practical point of view, (that's probably too late, but hey ho). Rather than a tablet, might it be easier to use an older android phone that can run the torque app? It'll have all the bells and whistles, such as GPS etc and be much slimmer and easier to find a space for. You could even keep the vents in place.

I'm guessing it will be the same across the country, as the branch of CEX local to me is always stuffed full of older phones that would be perfect for this kind of job. You could even stick a Giffgaff (or similar) sim in there for your data.

Like I said... it's just a thought.

The torque app shows the boost pressure OK with a variety of different gauges available, but flat out it gives a reading of 1.5 bar which I believe is higher than the max a standard turbo should be.

Did in fact look at those sort of options but decided on a larger screen size. As for options the nexus 7 does have GPS etc  and picks up the internet via my mobile phone and as I'm on 3 there is no extra charge for tethering of data.

As you say if I were to have used a smaller device I would have tried to mount it on the right side of the instrument cluster.

Sorry for late reply's and no updates as the last 3 months have been busy at home, but all finished now.

Will start doing some more updates in the near future.

Cheers for the feed back Guys
