Which car do i keep ?!

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Im in a bit of a dilema i have had my vrs for 2 years and i have grown to like the relaxed motorway driving and leather seats mixed with the remap it is a brilliant car and has never let me down, until the other week where everylittle thing seemed to go wrong, the consol bushes collapsed and the front wheels moved about 4 inches when braking and i could move them by hand, this was not picked up on the MOT 1 week before which i was not happy about. Then the boost pipes started to leak, i hope anyway, i get a hissing noise when the boost kicks in. Then the service light came on and i just saw bills piling up so i decide to change the car. I got a clio 182 cup which is brilliant but costs a fortune to run and tax and the interior is shockingly dull and tacky.

My question is do i repair the VRS and keep that which at the moment i want to do because it feels much more refined than the clio, or do i sell the vrs and keep the 182 this is an option if the costs of the repairs to the VRS are too high.

With the boost pipes can i just replace the o rings in the pipework or are new pipes required? The EGR valve is also leaking oil so i wonder could this be causing the boost leak?

Obviously the two cars arent directly comparable one is a track car and the other is basically a sporty hatch back i dont race everywhere and the clio feels like it wants to go flatout everywhere and for town driving to work everyday the lack of low down power is a big part that i miss.

Sorry for waffling but i really cant decide, any opinions of what any of you do would be appreciated.

Jack

If you can't keep both them keep the one you like driving most, obviously the VRS will be cheaper to run so any costs incurred now will be recovered quickly against the running costs of the Clio.

I had a clio and got rid of it for the fabia, clios are unreliable, need constant care and cost a fortune to run!

Fabias are more refined, better mpg, cheaper tax as insurance for the same if not more power, id sayfix the fabia, wint cost too much!

If youve got a nice tidy example and you like it then it's a no brainer for me. Keep.

I bought a mk 2 vRS to replace my clio that was always breaking down.

VRS is comfy, and torquey compared the the clio, easier for town work and especially stop start traffic, but they are very different cars.

Still got the clio at the moment, but once its fixed I'm probably going to sell the clio.

I know your talking about a mk1 vRS, in which case is again easier to drive than the clio day to day, and far better on fuel.

But if track days are your thing, the clio is a winner if you keep it.

Thanks guys, I'm only 20 so I'm in full time education at uni for 2 more years after this year in full time employment so any money saved is a bonus especially at uni as I have a Landrover as well which isn't cheap to run, track days are something I want to do but having time to go is a problem and the benefits of having the clio for 3-4 track days a year are far out weighed by the cost savings of the fabia, guess ill start looking at the repair costs and go back to the fabia as long as it isn't a fortune of a repair bill I'm guessing not as the parts I have changed so far haven't been expensive.

Had a Clio 172 and ran a 182 for a few months for a friend and now own a Vrs

My opinion clips under steer massively unless big money spent on chassis, electrics are rubbish , as said interiors are terrible and bland the seats are crippling and the repair bills are worse than the Vrs ..

I wouldn't have another given there total **** !! Plus do you really want a car made by people who eat onions ?? Lol

But on a serious note I'd rather the Vrs but totally understand you lose faith when things go wrong but once sorted you'll be pleased you kept it cos the clio will cost more and go wrong a whole lot more often and once you get ge electrical faults you'll regret buying

Keep the Fabia and sell the Clio use the money to get the Vrs fixed and a few mods on too Ov course as Itl be a crime not to :)

Remember you've asked this on a skoda forum!!

Remember you've asked this on a skoda forum!!

And we have a winnerrrrr!!!!! :) :) :)

Would never own a French car

Well i did think there may be a bias towards Skoda, but this forum seems more likely to give an honest, useful opinion compared to the Renault one, and it has not failed, thanks :) ill get it on the ramps at the weekend and get it back on the road

Good choice matey all French cars are the same basic cheaply built and quite tacky

But will give them 1. Good feature SAFETY 5 star..

But build quality has to go to German cars

The thing you need to remember is when you have fixed the vRS you will know that these problems have been fixed and shouldn't reoccur.

If you buy another car, there is always a risk that you will have problems straight away.

Ask on a clio forum and everyone will tell you how amazing the clio is and how running costs shouldnt come into the question as they are that amazing and always drive with a smile they never get down about filling up.

Ask on a Skoda forum and everyone will tell you how amazing the fabia is and how running costs are a key factor in running a car so by keeping the fabia you will save milions in fuel bills over a period of a fortnight.

But honestly, i'd keep the Fabia, Dont like renault at all...

Agreed but I have only owned mine for a month so not that buyest yet..

But agreed they will say running cost shouldn't come into it which IMHO is total bul**** as in this day and age that is a massive factor but as said above once fixed you know it's 110%

Keep the fabia, won't cost much at all to put right

Sell the Clio.

Drive round economically in the Fabia.

Have fun off roading in the series 3 Land Rover, at least if you bend it you still have a decent car to get about in.

That's all I've got. :D

Ok decision made, don't suppose any body knows the part numbers for the intercooler pipe seals ? Or where I could find them. The EGR valve I guess I can get anywhere.

mine aswell blank the egr valve insead of buying a new unit, but apparently me and others thought ours were leaking cos you can see black oil type running down side, many have said they have this just common for it i think? if you saw the inside of the egr you would definitely go for a delete kit!

Please do let us know if you do decide to fix the problems on how you are doing them...especially the hissing..would be very useful to know!

Will keep you informed, went to skoda today to get a set of seals for the boost pipes, got told I cant get them seperatly but the pipe assembly is £177 + VAT which even made the guy behind the counter gasp. Got the bumper off this afternoon and the pipes seem ok they have some oil at the joints but nothing that wasn't there before.

Ill get the car on the ramps tomorrow and look at the turbo intake and outlet to see if anything looks odd there, if not i am thinking of fitting the darkside intercooler it's only £70 and the pipe work is not a problem having a tube bending business in the family. The dealer said I have an ASZ engine but the car is 54 plate I was led to believe that this was BLT. Does this have any effect if I fit an EGR delete because that is considerably cheaper that a new EGR valve.

Jack

egr delete is actually better and easier to fit jack ;)

Thought as much, does it bring up any lights in the dash and could they be mapped out?

Search button ^^^

Lol... if its an asz it may bring up a fault which can be deleted with a computer (mine didn't even bring up s fault)

ASZ on a 54 reg is more likely than a BLT.. especially if skoda said it is ;)

yes its brought the eml ON! turned it off just earlier with my u218 code reader i bought for a tenner! amazing really lol. see if it comes back on... fingers crossed it doesn't!
