Wierd starting problems - Octavia 2.0 TDI PD 2005

Featured Replies

Hi there

I hope someone can shed some light on my issue I have been having on my Octavia 2.0 TDI PD 2005.

This has happened before but I never thought about it much as I knew some of my glowplugs were buggered. I was getting an error on a VCDS reading:

3 Faults Found:

17055/56/57 - Cylinder 1/2/3 Glow Plug Circuit (Q10)

P0671 - 000 - Electrical Fault

Freeze Frame:

RPM: 882 /min

Torque: 58.0 Nm

Speed: 0.0 km/h

Load: 0.0 %

Voltage: 14.29 V

Bin. Bits: 00101100

Temperature: 9.9°C

Bin. Bits: 10110000

Now I have replaced all the glow plugs and when tested three of them did not glow. On Saturday just gone I have not driven the car for the whole day, when I got to the car on Sunday about 1pm I put the key into ignition waited for the glow plug light to go out and tried to start the car to my suprise it wouldn't start, I tried again and again and again, nothing. I then turned the ignition off and on again and off and on and off an on. Then I tried to sping teh engine and finally after spinning about 10 seconds the engine came to life again.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like that before? I have no problem starting the if I drive it daily. But one day of not driving the car should not cause these sort of issues for sure right? My other questions is does the fuel level drop at all it the car is not driven for sometime? Perhaps the pump needs to pump it up to the cylinders again?

I have to do another VCDS reading and see what happenes as it could the "harness" or some other wiring fault.

Thanks for your time.

I think the fact three of the glowplugs aren't heating up and the error that the scan revealed would suggest a wiring / electrical fault somewhere.

The longer a car stands the colder and more damp it gets and the more effort it requires to start.

Turning on and off the ignition repeatedly was probably enough to cycle the one remaining glowplug for it to fire the engine.

Replace the injector loom under the cam cover.

Apologies Silver

I dont think I have made myself very clear here. Before replacing the glow plugs I was getting the above faults. After replacing all the glow plugs I'm still getting an issue of when the car was not driven for a day I had problems starting the engine. Surely on these modern diesels engines one day of not running the engine should return these sort of symptoms?

Now I need to carry out another VCDS reading before I can find out what the real issues is and as "andyvee" has mentioned it could be the wiring harness under the cam cover.

Sorry about all the confusion.
