Offroad button again. Downhill on ice

Featured Replies

Catagorical no.

I asked my dealer the same question and they looked into it. It isn't just a question of reprogramming the computer, as it needs some different bits as well.

Many thanks, perhaps I will buy an Elegance when the lottery comes up!

You can get it as an extra on most models, certainly SE and up.

Thinking outside the box...

If you are driving uphill with winter boots on, in icy conditions, the haldex does a great job.

From comments on here I figure that there are very few situations that cannot be overcome.

So, if you are sliding downhill on ice, would selecting reverse to provide drive in the uphill direction (i'm assuming haldex works in reverse) slow down, and/or reverse the skid so you would potentially end up going uphill in reverse?

I know it is a mad idea but would it work?

Graham, John H... Over to you.

I would say it will make it even worse. If you are sliding you already have no grip. Spinning the wheels isn't going to help. I've seen something very much like this. Stopped car facing uphill on snow. Put foot down and it starts sliding backwards because they lost the static friction of tire on snow.

And yes, haldex works in reverse. At least on mine.

No it won't make any difference, CFB, and as said will potentially worsen the situation.

Actually the thing to do is to SLIGHTLY accelerate so that the car regains a little grip and then try slowing down again. This will also improve the steering capability and is exactly why I would never encourage people to use HDC in neutral.

And mine, as I have to reverse up the steep driveway to the garage!
