Windscreen and road grime - the white winter smudging is gone

Featured Replies

You may have worked this out already but I tried something today and it worked :)

This time of year I'm plagued, as are lots of others as I look around, with the white residue (presume it's salt) on my windscreen whenever there's no rain but the roads are wet/damp and you get that horrible sticky spray. It's worse toward the bottom of the windscreen but as it's below my line of sight I can live with it. Still annoying though.

I wondered why this happened and thought was it because the warm air being directed through the windscreen vents was warming the bottom of the windscreen enough to allow the spray on the windscreen dry a bit and hence not be cleared by the wipers when on intermittent wipe.

So, I turned off the windcreen's warm air flow, and after a minute or so the windscreen must have cooled down enough so the spray wasn't drying out. Hey presto and the white deposits were no more. Probably a balancing act between no white smudges and the windscreen misting up on really cold days but the rest of the journey to work up the A1 was smear free.

How do you actually do that on an FL model?

I know how to manually turn on the face level vents and the floor vents by pressing the dash buttons.

I get the white smudges as well and they can be irritating.

All I did was make sure the face level and floor vents' buttons were selected/illuminated, and figured that means the windscreen was not getting any warm air; therefore not set to auto.

That's odd. I find the best demist (once warmed up) is with the screen air heater turned on (the button above the rear screen electric heating button.)

And, once cleared, when it is very cold I find having the foot and face heater buttons on, rather than the Climatronic auto, is much snugger - especially at 70 or 72 degrees !!

I too was suffering with the white smudging you describe. However, two days ago I replaced my windscreen wiper blades with Bosch Aerotwins. Dont know why I didnt do it earlier as the smudging / smearing has totally disappeared!
