  • Oh no. That's bound to set off the 1.0L fiesta owners now!

  • I watched Grease over Christmas - theres only one way to settle this...... lol

I believe that the S3, though being the same basic engine, has a more powerful turbo, uprated injectors, an intercooler and most likely a different map to that of the vRS.

I gather it's possible to modify the vRS to S3 specs (seen a few companies offering this) but it don't come cheap.

S3 will always win hands down. I am talking standard cars. If you spend a few grand on the vrs it will be as quick as an S3 (unless it's wet!). If you spend a few grand on the S3 then you have 360bhp and the vrs has no chance.

To buy though there is a massive difference in price and for now I prefer my Octy as it has a massive boot being the estate version.

ive owned an impreza years ago which is heaven and earth compared to the S3 and they have similar stats.....

I wanted a 5 door and big boot car and am happy

My old vRS TSi running Revo stage 1 would have kept up with my Golf R (same engine as S3) in a straight line at motorway speeds. On the twisty country roads though the vRS wouldn't see which way the R had gone. The biggest difference is the torque on the vRS which means in gear acceleration is awesome and whilst it's still good in the R you need to work the gears more to make similar progress. The R just loves to be revved and it rewards when you do.

The vRS with Revo stage 1 had 244bhp and 315lbs whereas the R has 266bhp and 258lbs. The R is a good bit heavier too.

An R or an S3 are significantly quicker than a standard vRS though, like night and day....

Not that it matters but I thought te Octy top end was 152 (off the top of my head)

Aside from that what are the 'driver skill' stats supposed to mean?

Driver skill - my mate was 'poking' fun of me lol - this is a lie

Had the opportunity to go for an S3 and much as i was tempted, 3 things put me off: 1. The massively harder ride, 2. The fact that it would be just another Audi. Great cars and all, but there is a hell of alot of Audis on the roads. 3. The VRS is a better balance of cost, practicality, performance, looks and enjoyment.

Admittedly I might close the power gap soon...

An Audi S3 turbo conversion into the vRS makes an epic car!

That's cheating though Martin :)

Well i suppose the obvious would be a full S3 conversion. Engine and drive train in a VRs shell. Not the most cost effective , but would be having your cake and eating it. Would make one seriously wicked Q-car. :bandit:

Why bother? More cost effective to just buy the S3 plus you get the 4wd.

I've done the full S3 conversion (including the actual engine) and I would have bought an S3 in the first place had I had the money. I bought the vRS when I was 19, as it was the cheapest way to get a TFSI compared to the golf GTI etc.

As it stands I love my car but I do wish it had 4wd.

I drove a standard Tsi Scirocco the other day. Lovely car, but I was surprised at how slow it felt. It really does need a remap (as does the Octy) to open up the engine a little.

I now have an Impreza Sti as well and you just can't beat the AWD of the line. As quick as my vRS is when up and running, the Sti obliterates it to 60.

^^ Totally agree i had a classic shape impreza wagon and off the line it was quick it only had 270hp but it felt brisk.

270bhp is still decent by today's standards and that would have weighed less cars of today.

I had a sti v4 type R - heaven and earth difference compared to any VAG 2.0

Hmm, I wonder how many more "260+ bhp car beats 200bhp car" posts it's gonna take to get this point across.....?

Nah I was referring to vag s3 260 bhp car - I've got a tfsi

.....Especially when someone else has footed the bill for it!

If only skoda could borrow the Quattro system, that would be an epic car!

Sometimes being a bit different is not about being cost effective. From the outset i said it 's not the cheap option. The octavia is one of the few cars out there that's a bit different to begin with. A hatchback that looks like a saloon. Also unless you're a wizz with the v.a.g parts catalogue you will have to pay Audi prices for everything. Anyway what's the point of always taking the obvious choice. The platform of these cars allows us more than ever to swap and play. For example If the 4wd system of the S3 is a step too far , what about the engine and gearbox of the seat leon cupra r , it has limited slip front diff and k04 engine .....I have always like the instrument cluster in leon cupra / r think it would look sweet in my VRs ....pitty it so difficult to find.

I do live leon Cupra R's and the others with the K1 and BTCC kit. I do think that the trendy interior and lashings of plastic do cheapen them though. From outside they are stunning.

I agree they look great outside but the interior put me off plus Octavia has so much more space. I had the previous cupra r 225 which had a few mods but was only about 265bhp. My mate had an evo 6 with 330bhp which would destroy the r in a straight line but for all the 4wd grip it lacked the feel and confidence through the steering. The cupra r would beat it on a tight twisty road. Just waiting for all the comments now of saying that's impossible! And yes if the weather is terrible then obviously 4wd wins.

so you can get Octavia scouts etc with 4wd, isnt that the same system thats in the S3? easy swap surely ;-)

It's only the instrument cluster in the Leon cupra r i like , the rest is not as nice ( although the front seats seem more sporty) as the Octavia. Not sure about the 4wd system , i assume it's haldex rather than quattro in the S3. But even the haldex system , can be made to perform more like the quattro through the use of handy electronics.
