VRS Purchase Advice

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm thinking of purchasing a second hand VRS and have found what appears to be a good one at Carshop. I'm concerned about the oil issues some people have experienced and there's a photo of this car's engine showing some dried on white marks. Now they could be quite innocent and something as simple where the garage have tried to clean the engine bay, however I don't know enough to know for sure. If anybody could shed some light on this, I would really appreciate it.

That stain dosn't say anything about oil usage.

Looks a decent price for a car that has quite a few extras.

Re the oil usage problem, the best way is to get to speak to the previous owner.

Some dealers offer money back in 7/30 days if not satisfied....if you had the car on this basis and the dipstick level went from top to bottom in a few hundred miles then it would be a reject.

The old way of checking for an oil burning engine was, with the engine hot,let it idle for a minute or two and then rev it. Any blue smoke from the exhaust = reject.

If you're not in a hurry (although you might get lucky with a car in the system) )I'd stretch to a new one from drivethedeal. With 5 year warranty.Although depends on how well spec'd that one is.

I'm always a bit dubious about car supermarkets. My mate just bought a car from these lot and they turned out to be a real cowboy outfit. As above have a look for new deals or nearly new at main dealers.

Plenty to chose from and i see the one you are looking at.

Are you getting it for £10,000 or less?

It is not a great bargain for a 2010/60 plate with 15,000 miles. if paying £10,500

Has is actually done 15,000 miles now,

pictures were taken at just over 12,000 miles.

(It is a very clean looking car.)

Tyres look like they are replacements, not very worn if it was a 15,000 mile vRS.

Has is had its '2 year/20,000 mile' 'Inspection Service and Oil/Filter Change'. ??

It is important that it has.

You need to find out the cars history.

If it has had Warranty Work for High Oil usage, that is not a problem if all is sorted.

I take it you are getting the rest of the '3 year Skoda UK Warranty'.

** I would want to be buying an Extended Skoda Warranty on it. when it is 3 years old. **

Try Skoda UK to see if this car has had issues.

Look at the V5 the Dealer has, see if you can find out anything on the cars History,

First Registered to a Dealership possibly.

Ex Demonstrator, bought back by Skoda or anything like that.

None are a problem, but it is best to pic up on the cars history.

Maybe someone from here that knows how the vRS drives can go have a look with you.

EDIT>

I see that someone had not Zeroed the trip for 2700 miles. when the pictures were taken.

I would look at the Service Manual and see when the first '1 year/10,000' mile Oil change service was done.

maybe it was at around the 9,000 miles.

I suspect that this car might have been 'In trade' for a while now.

Could be a bargain, but i think i would be looking at paying £9,500 for it, tops.

Looks good, my local dealer have a similar one, green black wheels and was traded on for a yeti - worth a look? Caffyns Tunbridge Wells.

I like the REG wulf

I would always try and buy one from a dealers - peace of mind as opposed to some shoddy car supermarket...

Actually looks pretty honest in the photos; it has proper skoda mats and a bootliner so would bet its a fairly pampered one.

Check the dark chrome wheels for kerbing; may have been refurbed or smart repaired but not a big deal if fixed well.

15k miles for a 60 plate is good too. If you give the reg details to Skoda UK given the car is for sale they MAY tell you its repair history.

Just buy mine off me. none of the factory piston update rubbish. Proper uprated pistons instead.

Looks good to me - has climate control which was what I held out for. I paid £10,500 of a 2010 car with 20,000 miles in Blue. Would have bought this if it was around at the time. I wouldnt worry about it not coming from a dealer as you always get some sort of warranty and it will also have balance of manufacturers warrantly till later this year.

Not sure how the extras affect the price as I found it varied massivley. Mine had climate, parking sensors, cruise, white roof and GSM Bluetooth phone prep thing which is nice. I would have prefered a dark roof & wheel combo but I am still happy with the car :)

Thanks for all the great advice.

I agree, I would prefer to buy from a Skoda dealer, however this seems to be the best priced one around at the moment. I've not been down to see it in the flesh yet, and I've not tried to get a deal out of them.

I've noticed the tyres are really low profile, how do find they cope with pot holes and speed bumps? Also, do they effect the ride at all?

Cheers

Test drive one - only way to find out.

One mans firm is another mans soft, without sounding odd!

I would say its quite a firm ride but its not anywhere near as hard as the MINI I had previously. As above - have a test drive. I drove the one at the local dealer first as its close, then went looking elsewhere

Spot on. I found it floaty and comfortable compared to my other cars.

Criticisms on how they drive standard.

Brakes - more than adequate but a bit wooden in feel

Steering - too light and lacking feel

Prone to roll in corners, suspension quite high as standard. Doesnt ride terrribly though.

Car struggles to put its power down in damp conditions, ESP and XDS can on occasions hinder progress.

Thats just my observations. All round a very good car with an extremely good powerchain; overall better than then likes of a Renaultsport Clio just not as sharp to drive. For the money very little contends with it.
