  • Okay buttplug, have it your way, but what I was referring to was standard vRS'. In the case of which I fully stand by my original statement. As stock, even brand new, the handling is quite frankly, a

  • Aye but on here we know what we're talking aboot so you can be reassured, and read from the background again.

Who's that directed at?

I'll assume it's aimed at me then, if I've helped just one person understand the correct operation of an ARB then I'll consider the time typing well spent.

Actually, i just felt i would lighten the mood with some space inspired gifs

i particularly like this one too

though am not sure of the relevance tbh

Yup lots of good info not that i understand most of it as its waaay beyond me

:)

to be honest jase, whats not to understand about jean-luc picard facepalming, or captains log, pretty self explanatory if you ask me

Hahaha, all good info, but I'm pretty sure most of us have seen that particular axle up close and personal on numerous occasions.

However, all your textbook stuff doesn't change the fact the the Golf MkIV beam has incredibly weak ends, and the ends of it do flex about a LOT. And it's not restricted to this particular model either. The A4 suffers greatly from the same phenomenon, hence why some enterprising people made these lovely weld on reinforcements, as an alternative to fitting rarb's. It's just a shame nobody went down the same route for this particular platform.

As for how I've managed to avoid the ditch, well, you're welcome to drive my completely standard vRS Estate, with all-new stock suspension, albeit poly-bushed all round, with a 4X12 guitar cab, several guitars, a couple of home-made guitar amps and a gig bag in the boot, and a bass rig on the back-seats, and then ask that question again. As you'll be amazed as just how shockingly crap and floppy it really is under stress.

Nobody is trying to discredit your (self) superior knowledge here, but there is much more going on in this particular platform, that just quoting theory. A bit of practical experience with the actual models can go an awful long way.

You can empty your wellies out now...

Jase if helped you pick up anything I'm pleased.

To come back to my original point about the mixing of components, my friend states:-

.

And the vRS does not have a rear sway bar

It actually does, the entire rear beam is an anti roll bar, but it does have an anti roll bar element built into it.

If you look at this picture from RobClubley's rear bush thread you'll see the end of a metal tube between the bush and the hub.

Here's that tube inside the axle.

This is a factory welded in rear anti roll bar. I don't have the specs for skoda or seat but I can tell you in Golf IV they come in 18 and 21.7mm.

So say you have a VRS or Leon that starts off as a standard 1.6 it may well have the 18mm factory bar where as a VRS or Leon 20V Turbo may have a 21.7mm bar.

If you then add an after market bar based on someone's experience with a different OE axle you'll get very different results.

Again, this I know well enough, ta. I am VERY familiar with the models, and know only too well about the tubular built in bar. It doesn't however do much to stop the ends of the beam flexing inwards (and rearwards) like the aftermarket bars do. This is why I differentiate between anti-roll, and sway bar nomenclature.

The skoda and the seat are identical to the Mk IV Golf beam in every way. I've not seen any with an 18mm bar as yet, but then I've not worked on any of the smaller models.

Have noted that Rob's bushes look a little more conical than mine... I'm assuming they're still Superpro...

you should see what my bush and sway bar looks like - a damm sight bigger than 21.7mm though - and doesnt help cornering

Go healthy sized sway bar yeah

go sway bar go...

on a serious note...its hard to visualise, without looking at a technical pictures/video exactly how this comes to play, i have attached a link to help simplify the current discussion.

you need to copy and paste, taking out the space next to . and com

on another serious note

flaps and flanges

thats them, in copious amounts, as they can be installed to improve handling and responsiveness, particularly in the outer reaches of swatham

lol, i was considering some, just for looks, help me look good, what ya recon?

What... on yer flange?

you follow my link to technical info D?

Looks awkward... :D

I reckon I could still slip through the middle though...

I don't know how else I can tell you that lateral strengthening from an after market ARB is an impossibility, did you not understand that picture I put up?

There is no way a rear axle flexes inwards, it would create rear wheel steer and the car would be undriveable.

Most VW group cars have toe tolerances of 10 minutes, on a 16inch wheel that's about 0.6mm per wheel, what you're suggesting is that axle moves enough to effect the handling but not enough to induce rear wheel steering, it's impossible.
