DIY Front Mount Intercooler help

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm looking at getting a FMIC for my vrs :)

I was thinking about getting all the bits separate and doing it myself rather than buying a ready made kit

What's the best way to go? Twin pass?

Also, what pipe work etc would I need?

Help is greatly appreciated :)

Cheers

I commented on that thread with no reply :(

If it help im running a twin pass with 208bhp so yeah give it a go. If u can make it fit use it

Its easier to do a twin pass.

Using 2.25" /57mm pipework is your best bet.

Try + use as much metal pipework as poss + make sure u get beaded pipes or get them beaded.

There are numerous threads on here of peoples DIY attempts + some are really good.

It would be alot easier without the front crash bar so some people remove this.. i wouldnt recommend this tho for insurance reasons if u have a bump.. although contrary to some peoples opinions it is not designed to help handling at all so will not effect this.

In basic terms

-the less bends u have the better

-the shorter the pipework the better

-the less sylicone pipework the better

-single pass coolers are more efficient

-twin pass coolers are easier to pipe in on a fabia

-single pass are cheaper

-u will need more pipework for a single pass + may need to remove the fogs

-u may need to chop down the crash bar + bits of the front bumper (inside knobbles)

-seat ibiza crash bars are smaller so if u got a seatsport/ forge style cooler u would not need to cut it

-ash hoses are good value

-coolers can be bought off the bay but the £90 twin pass is alot thicker than the seat sport ones so will not be a straight fit like them.

Hope this helps ;)

What a guy! Great bits of info!

Looks like its going to be a seat sport one :)

Then source some pipe work

I'd wait for the sponsor who is going to be releasing one soon :)

Who is the sponsor?

excellent summary. Though you can use 51mm pipework as I have installed and still obtain good results.

Seat sport intercooler is a bit of a pain to fit!

I thought the seat sport is the easier one as you don't have to chop the crash bar etc?

This is dav-vrs's using the seat ibiza crash bar + seat sport fmic + darkside hardline piping..

I should have made that clearer. IF u use a seat ibiza crash bar (which is smaller) the seat sport (or seat sport style fmic's) will bolt straight on with the darkside pipe kit or seat pipe kit or forge pipe kit.. all expensive.

The cheaper u want it the harder it is to fit ;)

The Seat Sport one is still not easy IMO. You have to cut the crash bar, then trim the bumper and radiator surround

What a perfect bit of information! Go on ol chap lol

I have a cut crash bar and no foglights with a single pass cooler. Just a universal one i think

Here is my setup before

Got hold of some random bends from local exhaust place

Fitted it all on with some bits of silicone hose and plenty of jubilee clips and hose clamps

Then lowered the cooler down a bit to make pipework look a little neater

I had to extensively modify the crash bar, modify the radiator surround and the bumper.

I couldn't use a ibiza crash bar as I have headlamp washers.

Best thing to do is buy an Ibiza! Straight bolt on fit.

Isn't the THS seat sport style one better than the Seat one?

Isn't the THS seat sport style one better than the Seat one?

Its the same design just made by a dif company + cheaper (just like the forge one but thats dearer)

Isn't the THS seat sport style one better than the Seat one?

It has a thicker core compared to the seat sport cooler

with larger and welded end tanks too or something like that
