top speed

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'd love to test the top speed of my vrs cr somewhere, legally though. Without shelling out for a track day, is there anywhere I could do this? I live in Sheffield if this helps.

Cheers!

  • if a tyre lets go at 70 mph on a british motorway you could die. any number of random thing MAY happen. I was happy with my risk assesment at the time, yet you seem to be saying from a camera snapshot

  • In short .......No Germany ??

  • Find somewhere with a set of Laycock rollers. You can go flat out and stay in the same spot all at the same time!

In short .......No

Germany ??

Find an autobahn with no speed limit (not all have no limits) or isle of man but you wont get that quick over there

Germany. Saw 143mph over there. Cruised at 120mph. The UK could learn alot from the German system.

Damn! Maybe a track day or drag strip it is then. Of well!

To get a good impression of your topspeed, you will need a fair stretch of free autobahn (and by that I mean a lot of miles, not just 2 or 3).

Tracks or drag strips are way too short.

Even here in Germany it isnt always possible to get a good free run. Too often people are blocking your way.

I'm not sure that even a track day would see you reaching your top speed - not unless you found a track with a very long straight.

Best time/place is Germany, de-restricted section of Autobahn on a Sunday morning.

The traffic is quiet and there are NO lorrys on the roads (it's the law on a Sunday morning) and then when there are lorries most stretches of the Autobahn have no overtaking for lorries.

Last time I was on a road like this we had 4 adults in the car and a boot full of gear in our Seat Cordoba PD130.

Had the cruise set to 120mph and managed to leave it switched on at this speed for 100 miles which didn't take long to cover :)

I also had a stint after that of the foot flat to the floor for a few miles and saw 145mph on the speedo (143mph on the GPS).

All legal too... Gotta love Germany!

Only place is germany, as Nardo wont let you on the track and also the Ehra Lessien track dont allow privates.

But also on sundays or at night, it isnt always possible to find good stretches if free autobahn. Unless you travel east or are in some southern parts of Germany.

And beware of the trucks that do drive on sundays!!

No matter what car you drive, to get to the topspeed will take you a while and therefor a lot of miles to get there.

To get to 210-220km/h in my old VRS tdi PD was OK, every km/h more took a while. The same with my current car, 240-250km/h is OK, every extra km/h takes time and miles.

And there are always people that will interrupt your way to your topspeed. Trust me, I know what I am talking about at 60tkm a year.

Germany at night, does not have to be weekend.

Here is a map for you, here is the legend. Just pick one of the longer blue lines :)

Sorry, but the map hasnt been updated since 2009 and since than a lot of changes are made.

And dont forget the road works. Germany is well known for their extensive and longlasting road work. :wall:

You can check roadworks before the trip. There's almost always a parallel running motorway in most directions if you cross Germany border to border rather than live in it. Also, there is a more up to date online atlas of speed limits somewhere, but I forgot the link.

Changes or not, I still manage to get 3h+ of 130mph+ (GPS) Super(b)Cruise over the 4h-4.5h it takes usually to cross Germany for me.

Though I just noticed they scrapped the old BMVBS roadworks guide in November, pity as it was quite convenient to use and usually up to date. I guess I need to find new website listing roadworks with distance and limits now... oh wait, found it here, here and here :)

Please tell me a passenger took the photo!?!?!

I love the way the OP said "without shelling out for a track day", and everyone is suggesting hopping over to Germany, with the resulting ferry costs, fuel costs etc etc etc

I'm not exactly sure what 'legal' answer he was hoping to get TBH

The A5 south of Frankfurt is flatish and pretty straight, one of the best places I have come across. It has been widened and the whole section is now 4 lanes, the new surface is pretty good. Beware the interchange at Darmstadt, the big commercial centre means lots of people are already shopping in their heads. Like others have said, chose your time carefully.

Bernt Rosemyer had an attempt at the world speed record here. He was blown off course, crashed and was killed. There is a small monument at the pull-in. Even slight curves at high speed can seem daunting.

However fast your car can go, there is likely to be someone trying to go faster coming up behind. One of the financial groups my sister does work for has a fleet of cars for the sole use of executives. One particular guy from the states would take his holiday and spend it blatting around in various ferraris, lambos and the like.

At interchanges, there are often speed limits, which are pretty well adhered to, watch out for collective braking.

yes, with 4 people and luggage taken by swmbo who was sitting behind me at the time :)

brave lad u r lol

I know, I might be annoying. But driving the topspeed once doesnt say much.

It will always be just that one moment. If you can drive the car flat out more often, you will notice that the car wont do this everytime.

There a better and worse days. Although weather and wind seem equal, the car will vary in topspeed.

Had my tdi pd at 256 km/h once (behind a M5 V10 who didnt press on, but took me with him in his slipstream. This was at night on the A3 where the autobahn was descending)

Never had the opportunity to do this speed again.

Same with the audi, 255 indicated is repeatable, but the 268 isnt.

I took a few of my bikes to raf elvington fairly close to sheffield, they run events there and there drag racing is normally on the 2 miles run way thats slightly down hill. i had all of my bikes flat out there, dont know if your car will hit top speed in 2 miles but its an option atleast.

Doesn't look the best stretch of road to be travelling at that speed.

Directly above the centre point of the satnav, you can see a little way down the road a gap in the Armco where you, and your 3 passengers would have died if a tyre had let go at that point.

TBH you'd do well to walk away from a tyre letting go at those speeds anyway, The joins in sections of road are not just thrown down like in the UK they tend to be a lot higher grade and don't fall apart in winter.
