New oil usage figures?

Are you topping up when the light comes on? I'm not checking mine that regularly and relying on the light (which some say is foolish). I haven't put any oil in in 3000 miles, hopefully there is some left in there (2010 CAVE engine).

I check around every 500 miles or every other fill up roughly. It was mid hatched area this morning

  • Seb, I spoke with Mitchells just last week about trade in of our Fabia, even with the oil usage that they dealt with I was offered a respectable 11,250 for a two year old Fabia VRS 2011 with 6,000 mil

  • Just because SKODA/VAG print something deep in a badly translated to English Owners manual does not mean that you have to listen to their cr4p. If they want to make out that their products might cost

  • Ring Skoda Customer Services  Tip: be nice and don't scream and shout it's amazing how helpful they are when treated like human beings

is it only ever tootling along matey , or is it given a good thrashing every now and then? (and its definatly the CTHE engine right?! lol..)

Yeah, it potters everywhere nowhere to give it a good thrash on this Island, I think that's the trouble, not overly bothered by usage of oil, just the added expense really. And yeah, definitely the CTHE engine ;-)

If mine was mid hatched I don't think I would bother topping up

I wait until it's near the bottom of the cross-hatched area. Takes half a litre to take the level back up to or very close to the top of that section.

when I get my new one, I will be driving it normally including red-lining it and full throttle, just like I did with this one....

I have been checking my oil recently (although still not topped up in the last 36k) and it varies greatly.... from between the lower area (lower 3rd) of the hatch to the top of the hatch...... and it sometimes reads much more than at other times.... I think its just possible that people could be topping up before its needed... then it gets blown out....

100% agree with your last statement. That's why we should be able to rely on the oil light (although some claim their car has conked out without any low oil warning light)

The oil light idea is really crazy if its your car and money.

Or even someone elses.

If a oil capacity of 3.9 litres on engines is a little low, then thats just that.

An engine like the Twincharger that takes 3.6 litres, running 1 litres lower is asking for trouble.

The car is having to work harder to cool coolant to lower that lesser quantity of oil which is running hotter.

(thats the basics of it.)

If your car uses no oil then its hardly necessary to check, but then you might as well be running the correct amount or know what the amount is.

Trusting to an Oil light that you do not even know if it works, and some on this forum have had ones that dont is just lottery time.

If you own the car, the Warranty is not there to save you for ever, & luckily so far nobody here has had an engine give up at 70mph on the outside lane of a 3 lane motorway.

I had a UJ go & a propshaft come off in that circumstance and i hope never to be in a situation like that again.

I've said it before, but Skoda have an oil warning light on the car. If a car fails because it does not work (and in talking about failing to light up with low oil, not just a bulb has gone) then they are opening themselves up to some serious legal action. Surely the oil light IS the fail safe system for making sure the engine has the correct amount of oil in. I'm sure it even says somewhere in the manual about "when the oil light comes on...." Etc.

As George said about the oil light, why wait for it to illuminate (if at all), I'd rather keep mine at the correct amount when I get the opportunity (and keep track of usage) rather than wait for the light to come on and not have any oil to top up with. The amber light did come on once before and it needed 1250ml to get it back to the correct level, not a lot of use if I've only got half a litre to hand.

Call me old fashioned but 'better safe than sorry' works for me :-)

When you put the key in and turn on, does a Oil Warning light 'Show/Test' ?

What does it look like?

Is it a 'red oil can' 'Low oil pressure' light?

"if the warning light does not go off after the engine has started or flashes while driving.

Check the oil and top up with oil as necessary".

*No 'oil can' light in red shows on the dash off my vRS when the other lights test before starting the car.*

I have seen written words come up with 'Check oil'

not seen a 'Low oil warning light' on in a vRS.

Each to there own really.

Low oil warning is the amber light I believe

I think it was amber 'Check Oil', possibly with an amber oil can image too, I just seen it and checked to be honest and when there was no sign of oil on the dipstick the actual warning message was the least of my worries!

'I believe'

& 'i think it even says in the manual'. 'low oil warning is the amber i believe'

Best to know exactly if thats your routine and case if it all goes tits up.

Reading an owners manual and understanding a car and a dipstick is quite easy.

Its like dipping oil, not difficult really.

SKODA do one of the worst Owners Manuals anyplace, Lost in Translation,

& the 2010 one with a vRS is cr4p.

Trusting oil waning lights is a bit like trusting TPMS.

With the TPMS, you need to set your tyre pressures and set the TPMS, not trust it will tell you if your tyre pressures are too low.

Never trust in electrics.

Nobody makes you do checks, just safer for everyone if you do.

PAGE 19 in the PDF manual is better than the Printed Manual i have.

red, amber audible warning etc

Yes George

I am glad i read that, because the stuff i knew was not up to date.

ie,

The stuff about the light, audible signal, & it going out if the bonnet is left open for 30 seconds.

Light flashing if you not topped up etc,

Thats fair enough.

'Faulty Engine Oil sensor'

and flashing Amber light and audible warning when you switch on, i never knew about.

i bought mine about 3 weeks ago checked the oil week later was in the dont top up area, checked today and is 1/4 up the hatched hatched part is that excessive - I've done just short of 700 miles

How many miles has the car done in total? Or is it new?

I use the vRS oil light... It checks when turned on and if a level issue is detected it highlights as vehicle status saying 'Check Oil' on Maxidot...

its 18mnths old and 12680 miles, how much oil is it from the bottom of the hatched bit to the no fill area?

About half a litre, give or take.

Its good enough for me - and yes, it does check on startup. Not disconnected it to test it, but if it fails, its a warranty failure anyway.

is that about right then, its just knowing my luck I'd end up with one with oil problems

Not strictly related to the topic subject but if you need to order some, check out these people:

Cheaper than many other places and delivered this morning after ordering yesterday afternoon.

Good find lee

Do you need 504.00 oil if you are doing fixed interval servicing?
