Is the Ice Scraper guaranteed?

Featured Replies

Having scratched two previous Octavia's windscreens with Halfords ice scrapers despite being very careful having done it once, will the Octy 3 supplied ice scraper be able to clear the windscreen without damage?

Unless it's made from myrrh, puppy fur or some other exotic substance I doubt it'll be any better. I wonder how many owners will put the scraper back behind the filler cap after use. Will the filler cap even open to get the scraper if it's that icy? I wonder

Behind my filler cap is always full of grit and dirt when I open it up. Effin stupid place to keep it if you ask me! Unless the Octy III has rubber seals to stop road spray finding its way in.

Then wash the car properly!! :giggle:

Do Halfords diamond coat their ice scrapers? Can't say I've ever had a scraper scratch a screen, or certainly nothing that noticeable

Do you have any pictures of the damage?

I don't have any pictures because after damaging two I don't use a scraper on my present vRS. The damage consists of lines of delamination that is noticeable when driving into sunlight.

delamination would only occur where the glass is bonded and be noticeable at the edges and not on the outer or inner layers though, surely? I don't think an ice scraper would cause delamination.

Has it had a replacement windscreen at some point?

No windscreens were never replaced. The scraper cut through the outer layer of the windscreens leaving scratches that were especially visible whilst driving towards sunlight. Like I said previously having noticed the scratches on my first Octy I was more careful on my second but still it occurred. I've read other posts on the subject at the time ( 3 to 4 years ago) maybe Skoda have toughened their screens since. I've used the same generic ice scrapers for years on other manufacturers cars with no problems. But on my third Octy I've resorted to alcohol based sprays and waiting for the heater to clear the screen!

Scraping the screen is always likely to scratch!

For the sake of five minutes, wait until the heater clears the screen!

Can't say I've ever noticeably scratched any windscreen of any car from using a rubber scraper. I've never used the rigid plastic edge, always the softer edge s it follows the glass contour better.

I use a credit card type thing (supermarket loyalty card etc) to scrape the windscreen. I haven't scratched one yet with that.

It takes forever for a diesel engine to defrost a windscreen. Especially when it's really cold.

Do you not feel guilty, burning fuel and pumping out exhaust for 5 minutes?

Nope. It's only a few mornings a year.

And if the filler cap doesn't lock close, will it get nicked?

The problem I have is not with scrapers. Its dirt and grit from the roads that settles on the windows, then ice freezes over it and you can either wait for it to thaw or sandpaper the glass :(

erm......

Excuse me! I'll have you know I take great care of my car and wash it twice a year whether it needs it or not. :giggle:

Its when I open it to wash it that I see the accumulated grit and filth from road spray. Thing is when driven in Yerp the fuel filler is kerbside, here in the UK it is road-side so it gets the full force of the spray and filth thrown up by every truck going the other way.

One of the more subtle things they miss when changing left hand drive to right hand drive.

I still think it is an effin dumb place to put an ice scraper!!! Road dirt aside what about little splashes of fuel when you fill up? So not only does the grit grind and scratch your screen but the diesel leaves a nice oily film! And! If you can't open the doors to get your ice scraper out then what is the point of clearing the windows anyway!! MIne lives in the door pocket in winter and is transferred to the under seat cubby thingy in summer..

Ice scraper behind the flap in the Rapid I have a loan of.Its a good idea but in their wisdom(and prob to save money)Skoda have not connected the central locking to the fuel flap anymore.

There is a locking fuel cap on the car so I hope the Octavia III is not going the same route or the ice scraper wont last too long..

Dirt and grit inside the fuel filler flap!?

Might I suggest you shut it when driving along :giggle:

I've two MkII Octavia's and the flap is held tight against the bodywork with a rubber seal. If dirt and grit is getting inside my fuel filler flap then it's getting passed the door seals and into the interor too!

Having it on the offside is better than the nearside, the full force of spray from passing veicles isn't going to be as bad as the huge puddles at the side of the road. The nearside of my car is often dirtier than the offside.

I find an old bed sheet put over the windscreen the night before does the job quite effectively!

Best way to stop any ice forming is take the screen out & keep it indoors & put it back in the morning. :giggle: :giggle: :D :D

I damaged windows with a heated scraper, it had a manufacturing error so the element touched the screen and damaged the coating on the glass. Company admitted liability but I traded in the car before following it up.

Suddenly had visions of Chav-gangs wandering the streets stealing ice-scrapers.

I think the chavs will nick 2 Rapid ice scrapers & make a pair of glasses out of them. :D

Only if they can find two Rapids.....
