Volvo V50 T5

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I was looking at getting back into a Skoda vRS for about £4-£5k. But really this would only get me a high mileage early Mk2, don't think I wanna go back to a 1.8T now. Have been looking at other options, what do you think of this:

Struggling to think of what I could get for the same money?! Main attraction is the engine/performance, toys/gadgets and reliability. Plus it's down the road from me, I'm fed up of travelling hundreds of miles to see cars now!

Anything else out there you think is better for circa £4k...?

Thanks :)

Woody

Great choice IMO. Personally id scout around for a rare 4wd version but even the fwd ones are fantastic vfm at that age and very tuneable! :) I'd take the mpg figure they quote with a bucket of salt!

I love Volvos! Always have done, I would definitely go for it.... I think they feel really good quality inside, Wish I could run petrols! Do to many miles, I moan about the BIO fuel I put in my Skoda never mind running a 2.5 petrol.

I love the T5 Volvos and wouldn't mind getting one myself.

I really am struggling to find anything else as good for £4k! I mean miles are a little higher than I wanted at 75k but if well looked after (guy who's selling has stamps at every 9k miles!) then it should only be one third through its life. I suppose it's quite old, almost 10 years now but I guess that's reflected in the price...Hhhhmmmmmmm

Looks a lot of car for the money.

t5 power ftw... that is all

Nice cars but quite small compared to an Octy mk2. That one is a very early one too. Any issues should have been fixed by now.

Only problem is there not a proper T5's, well not like the older ones but they still go quiet well and we don't see that many problems with them

Doesnt it have the light pressure turbo, same as what's in the Focus ST? If so its good for 290bhp all day long. :)

Was thinking this was nice too:

I know it's £1500 more, but then it is a vRS :) I know he's advertised it on here too, was just wondering whether it was £1.5k 'better'...?

That's what I'm thinking too!

Yes I think it's the same as an ST, so 5 cylinder 2.5T but he reckons easily averages early-mid 30's mpg. 0-60 in 6.5secs, I know it won't handle like an ST but will still be pretty decent? Drive a 56 plate Focus estate diesel for work and that handles very well!

Yeah it is same engine as ST's but its not same lump as the older s/v/c70's 2.3 T5's

Think its the best engine they put in the v50's well apart from the D5 engine but they didn't put it in them until 08

Even given the thinner cylinder walls etc its still a very solid engine IMO. :)

I have a V50 T5 project car and a V50 D5 daily driver.

30+mpg is a dream in my opinion. Engine is the same as a Focus ST. Research problems with cylinder liners, that's the only real common problem and not that common.

Stage 3 with intercooler sees 300+bhp, we've just tuned one to 310bhp.

From memory most ST drivers report mid to high 20's form mpg. I don't see how this could be any better.

And I think it even weighs slightly more than an ST, hence my original comment about taking it with a bucket of salt! Lol

My dads just picked up a Volvo v70 d5 ocean race edition. I think it may be awd too :)

Not been out in it but it looks stunning

Another Volvo lover here, I say go for it - I'll be shocked if you're disappointed.

It's got the 6-speed box so steer clear. Seriously, a mate of mine just had a £1500 bill for fitting a used replacement when the box on his broke recently due to a known fault (and stranded his wife near Slochd Summet on the A9 in February).

i like volvos too, i though long and hard about putting a t4 engine in my felicia before finally deciding to use a vag 1.8t, i wish id gone done the volvo route now looking back

I'd be interested to know what the fault was? The M66 is a very common gearbox for Volvos and is also used on the Focus ST and RS. My Volvo is running 600+Nm with no apparent detrimental effects and I've not heard of any failures since I've been involved in the Volvo forums (approx 12 months).

No worries from people I know running ST's with the same box on the naughty side of 300bhp and a quick google session doesnt come up with problems so I dont think its a common fault tbh. :)
