Steering column top bearing slightly worn [MOT Advisory]

Featured Replies

Looking at purchasing a 2002 Skoda Octavia Ambient (125k miles) but there's a re-occurring advisory on the MOT:

Steering column top bearing slightly worn

However, for some reason on the latest MOT this wasn't put down as an advisory. I suspect it's down to the individual doing the test whether its deemed an issue. However, my question is:

- How do you test for it?

- If it does fail - how much would it be to fix?

Thanks in advance :)

That's called someone looking for work!!!!!!

Never seen one fail or be worn !!

Could be something in it. I'm sure mine knackered. Never been picked up on the mot mind you.

Must admit when I searched the forum and found nothing on steering column top bearings.

Anyone know how to test? Shaking the wheel while stationary?

I'm told, grab wheel at 3 and 9 o clock and wiggle, same at 12 and 6.

If I do this mine there is play !!

Neither have I, but I have seen cars with this advisory.

Usually, it turns out be a different problem with the steering column such as the height adjustment sections having too much play.

Go on humor me, a little more info if poss !!

The forward/back position of the adjustment is implemented as two tubes with an interlocking indent in them. One tube slides inside the other.

The official fix is to replace the column, but it is possible to put a rod in the indent and use a vice/press to tighten up the interlock.

Funny you say.

As if I slacken off the bar for the adjuster, my rattling column goes a little quieter, obviously can't drive around like this.

How much ball ache does the above job require ??

It's not too difficult to get the column out.

Get down into the foot well and see what part of the column has play in it. Start from the bottom and work up.

You might have what I have. About 10mm play in the steering wheel. This is caused by the sliding joint at the bottom of the steering column. Inside it there's some plastic or epoxy kinda stuff that must have been damaged or for some other reason is no longer there.

Stupid thing is you can't but just that joint - you have to buy the whole column ($960 here).
