Modifications..........why?

Featured Replies

Most OEM car designs are usually tailored for the manufacturers agenda, whether it be for profit/image/market share etc etc as the priority.

Not everyone can afford (financial or environmental reasons) 'the drivers car'. So adjustments are made to tailor the driver more.

As to spending more money on modifying a car than its worth is very brave or stupid to the logical minded person.

At the end of the day I think we all like to be individuals so we do things which makes us stand out. Whether it be for the "alpha male" or attraction. Not everyone gets it right the first time :giggle: .

Personally I think drinking is a more expensive hobby...

+1 on the engineering challenge

  • Don't you just love predictive text? . Those two words should be 'Fabia' and 'Bilstein'

  • Yup - Personally would rather 'waste' money on cleaning/modding my car than spending it all down the pub

Because i enjoy it simple as...:)

I spend many hours a week looking at what new parts i can buy or change just because i find it fun and id rather spend the money on my car than doing what 99% of 20year olds do and go out drinking every weekend

^^ This.

Very few cars leave the dealers exactly how the owner wants them. And much like our homes and our own bodies many of us instinctively improve, make unique and take pride in our possessions. It also becomes a hobby.

As for Jabo's post, I'm number 2  Not fast nor furious - but clean, comfy, generally pleasing to the eye (IMO of course) and runs like a dream.

For me, it's a case of this being the car that fits my wishes the most, but still has areas for improvement. If something wears out, then I'll upgrade it while replacing.

Looks don't really worry me, it's just a case of improving the mechanical condition and making it suit my preferences more, such as; the car is on the firmest stock suspension, but I'd rather move it more towards handling than comfort so at some point I'll renew the old suspension with adjustable coilovers.

I completely get the other point of view though, and I'drarely spend money on a mod for the sake of it (i.e., not buying a bigger turbo until mine failed).

As for impressing girls, most of my female friends don't seem to care. They appriciate a nice looking car, but don't care if it looks nice due to mods, or factory items.

I think personally it's pretty insulting to put anyone into a box, and that's nothing to do with the person who raised it

Mods are a personal thing, done by people for their own personal reasons

I put gold bits on mine for a reason. I also put bigger brakes on the front for a reason, even if they do lead to longer braking distances

If other people don't like them, so be it, but to be categorised because of them is downright rude

...but to be categorised because of them is downright rude

this also applies to what car someone chooses to buy IMO.

Modded or not.

Does it? :o I always thought the opposite. (Bigger = more pad-to-disc surface area etc etc)

You missed that joke :D

I was going to write something but hell, bigger is always better :D.

Good thread Rainbow and there will be many different reasons (both for and against) as to why people do it.

My experiences so far have been:

Vauxhall Nova - all show no go. Spent silly amounts on smoothing it off, lowering, wheels blah blah blah. Got bored, wanted power, so...

Another Nova - Bit of a shed, but spent a fair bit making it look tidy. Once that was done, in went the Astra Red Top lump. Loved it, but then came the kids, so....

Focus ST 170 - Bit more room but nothing special, ooomph wasn't quite there, so out it went for.....

Gold VR6 - Had already had plenty done to it, and was fast as feck, but another that was ropey on the outside. Had it fully stripped out, full respray, deep dish 15's, sitting on it's arse with the 'Euro Look'. Just enough room for the kids and I could play silly buggers when on my todd. Then came this job and all has gone out the window. I'm still toying with the idea of a Furby vRS oil burner, but I no where it will lead. And as someone has in their signature..... Briskoda seriously damages your wealth!!

I wouldn't like to tot up how much I've spent on 'modding' but it is a bug, and once that bug bites, you are unfortunately hooked.

I do look at the youngsters out and about and do think to myself, WHY?, but then I pause and think to myself, that was me not so long ago.

Some of the stuff done is ludicrous along with the amount spent, just check out http://www.barryboys.co.uk, for some real eye openers

Same here, I shake my head when I see these kids in their Focuses with blacked out windows and silly exhausts but I fell firmly into that camp when I got my first car. At that age you don't think about it logically and think well actually if I saved my money I could buy something good a few years down the line... everything has to be instant results. When me and my peers were 18 we all looked at Cossies and M3s as totally unachievable goals so threw what little money we had at old heaps.

This.

100 times this.

"Hello I'm saving for a decent car" never ever pulled an 18 year old girl ;)

Does it? :o I always thought the opposite. (Bigger = more pad-to-disc surface area etc etc)

I don 't want to go too off topic, but I fitted bigger disks to my polo and the stopping distances increased. I'm on my phone atm, but I posted a thread about it Recently.

Upgraded to 4pots and it reduced as intended.

That mod was done for safety and to improve the breaking feel. :)

Surely there is a degree of 'modding' contained within the ordering process of any new car.....

It's called an options list.

OK yes so you're not going to get a tick box that says 'BFO Turbo and supporting mods to suit' or 'bigger brakes so I can begin braking a week ago' on any marques website configurator, but the principle is the same.

Personal choice.

And as someone has in their signature..... Briskoda seriously damages your wealth!!

Isn't that the truth! :D

I said I wouldn't mod the fabia.....it was the start of the slippery slope

I said I wouldn't mod the Octavia................I soon did.

I said I wouldn't mod the Citigo................yeah I really need to get help!

For real modifications there are several real reasons.

1. To build the car you want when it's not available (4wd VRS would be a relevant example).

2. Because you've always wanted to (4wd VRS comes to mind again).

But most of the young guys doing the same thing to every car just seem to be trying to fit in. They claim to be expressing their individuality, but they're all doing the same thing.

Buy a car.

Join the forum.

Lower it.

Bigger wheels.

Body kit.

Air filter that doesn't actually filter.

Noisey exhaust.

Intercooler if it's a turbo.

When they are done, they've produced just another abomination just like their mates.

You'll find in pretty much any car modification game you've got a few unique leaders and a whole herd of sheep following badly.

If I owned an F1 car i'd mod it to see if I could make it quicker :giggle:

Once along time ago a caveman (or woman can't say I'm not pc) invented the wheel. That was good enough, yet some felt that it needed improving.

"To obtain the obtainable dream"............is that not what we all do in one way or another?

Except the mods most do to cars, aren't improvements.

As much as we disagreed in another thread what you wrote above I'd not be able to put it any better!

EDIT: "I changed to wider tyres, from 185's to 235's, that with my carbon induction kit, front and back spoilers, removed rear silencer/resonator/etc, that TWICE as big intercooler makes my car a weapon now! POWAAAH!" LOL

Except the mods most do to cars, aren't improvements.

that would depend on what you think an improvement is though. Its not always about making it go faster. Surely that's down to a personal thing.
